    Gleichwohl: Systematisch sind die heute üblichen Varianten internetgestützter Wissensverwaltung der enzyklopädischen Idee des i8. Jahrhunderts verhaftet. Denn alles Wissen, das für die Bedienung beliebiger einschließlich der aktuell noch nicht bekannten Informationsbedürfnisse relevant sein könnte, soll über jeweils einen themenzentrierten Ort abrufbar sein. Die Übertragung dieser Idee ins Internet produziert vier Probleme. Aus Sicht der Nutzer sind dies drei: Es entstehen erstens ein information overload, Unübersichtlichkeit und dadurch eine strukturell bedingte Entmündigung des Nutzers. Dies verbindet sich zweitens mit dem o.g. Problem, dass die Informationssysteme zu ihrer angemessenen Nutzung jeweils spezifisch qualifizierte Nutzer benötigen. Drittens wird der Kontakt zur Forschungsfront systematisch verfehlt. Aus Sicht der Finanziers stellt sich viertens die Frage nach der Finanzierbarkeit des - und zwar fortdauernd - nötigen Personalaufwands."

Tatsächlich kann sich das Informationsmanagement an Hochschulen über einen Mangel an Herausforderungen nicht beklagen: wie die Autorin einleitend darstellt, haben diese nämlich sowohl administrative als auch wissenschaftliche Informationen in sehr großer Menge zu verwalten. Dabei sind die für spezifische Informationen benötigten Datenquellen sowohl im administrativen als auch wissenschaftlichen Bereich oft voneinander isoliert und befinden sich in heterogenen Systemen - unerwünschte Redundanzen und Inkonsistenzen sind die Folge. Verbunden mit der verstärkten Nachfrage nach elektronisch vorliegenden Fachinformationen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ist ein planmäßiges, strukturiertes und effizientes Umgehen mit Informationen notwendig. Ein Portal kann hier wertvolle Dienste leisten - doch was ist darunter eigentlich genau zu verstehen? Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit der einschlägigen Literatur gelangt Guba zu folgender Arbeitsdefinition: "Ein Portal ist [...] ein virtueller Ort für die Bereitstellung und Distribution von (über verschiedene Anwendungen verteilte) Daten und Informationen und ermöglicht eine durchgängig IT-gestützte Prozessteuerung übertechnische Systemgrenzen hinweg [...] Ein universitäres Informations- und Kommunikationsportal hat also die Funktion, auf der einen Seite den Universitätsbetrieb und auf der anderen Seite die grundlegenden Bestandteile des Wissenschaftsprozesses, nämlich die Gewinnung, Speicherung, Publikation und Vermittlung von Informationen bzw. Wissen sowie die wissenschaftliche Kommunikation, zu unterstützen". Als weiteres wesentliches Merkmal von Portalen kommt noch die Möglichkeit der Personalisierung der Funktionen hinzu.

    Zieht man alle Hindernisse ab, denen das Projekt begegnen kann - Einfrieren der Gelder angesichts der Finanzkatastrophe, Rückstände im Erfüllen der Aufgaben bei den einzelnen Nationen, technische Unfälle - zieht man also diese Hindernisse ab und konzentriert sich auf das utopische Projekt, dann hat man hier das idealistische kunstfertige Europa in einer Nussschale. Besser: in einer intellektuellen Nussschale. Das Europa der Bildung ist eben nicht identisch mit dem ökonomischen, es wäre nicht das politisch mühsam geeinte, es wäre nicht überschattet von religiösen Grenzziehungen und Tabus. Jedermann könnte sich nun von einer Handschrift des Korans zu einer Handschrift der Tora und von dort wiederum zu Dokumenten der Französischen Revolution bewegen. Unter dem Diktat der mächtigen Emotion, die unsere Wissenschaften antreibt, unter dem Diktat der Neugier, könnte jeder in jedes Land reisen und es von seiner besten Seite kennen lernen. Und umgekehrt hätte jedes Land einen Anstoß, sich gebührend um seine Schätze zu kümmern. Denn schließlich sollte ja der Kulturtourist doch einmal die Koffer packen und nach Chartres fahren, mit all dem Wissen im Kopf, das er zuvor erlangen konnte. Gibt es etwas daran zu bemängeln? Nun ja. Es ist einfach die Frage, ob die einheitliche Formatierung der europäischen Wunderkammer für ein neunzehn Zoll großes Bild nicht als solche doch wieder Züge eines Attentats auf die Bildung trägt. Eine Kathedrale ist eben kein Bild. Eine Sinfonie will nicht durch Pixel-Pakete transportiert und von nanokleinen Lautsprechern wiedergegeben werden. Bissig könnte man auch von einer Fingernagel-Kultur sprechen oder von einer Memorial-Kammer. Möglich geworden ist all das nicht zuletzt durch das Unternehmen Google. Google wird Millionen von Objekten digitalisieren. Und millionenfache Vernetzungen mit Amazon oder anderen Firmen, denen es ums Verkaufen geht, werden diesem Kulturzentrum schließlich auch eine ganz andere, eben ökonomische Attraktivität verleihen. Man kann nur hoffen, dass es gelingt, Kultur und Geschäft auf elegante Weise zu verschalten, dass also der wirklich Bildungssuchende im Tempel unserer Schätze nicht von lauten Händlern gestört wird."
