    Abstract
    Grenzen sind dazu da, dass man sie überschreitet. In diesem Sinne denkt John D. Barrow über die Grenzen der Wissenschaft nach - mit den Methoden moderner Wissenschaft. Das 'Unmögliche' war und wird immer nur ein Synonym für die Tür sein, die in das nächste Zimmer führt, und das Verlangen, wenigstens einmal durch das Schlüsselloch zu schauen, war und wird immer der Motor sein, der die Wissenschaft am laufen hält. Ohne diesen Antrieb gäbe es keine neuen Erkenntnisse: Fortschritt ist also de facto nur durch die Existenz ungelöster Probleme möglich. Daß diese keineswegs nur an der vorderen Front der Wissenschaften diskutiert werden, vermag zunächst nicht einleuchten, und doch sind es oft augenscheinlich triviale Probleme, die die Wissenschaftler in größte Not bringen. Wo liegt schließlich das Problem, wenn ein Hersteller von Computerplatinen seine Produktionsprozesse optimieren will, indem der Roboter die gut 3000 Lötpunkte auf dem kürzesten Weg ansteuern soll? Nun, dieses auf den ersten Blick wenig spektakuläre "Problem des Handlungsreisenden" hat einen modernen Computer immerhin eineinhalb Jahre Rechenzeit gekostet. Dieses Beispiel kann nur einen winzigen Einblick in das 'Unmögliche' geben, das der Mathematiker und Physiker John D. Barrow hier in faszinierender und spannender Weise schildert. Dabei schlägt er einen Bogen von den visuellen Paradoxien der Künstler Reutersvärd oder Escher über die Komplexität und Flexibilität des menschlichen Gehirns bis hin zu Gödels Theorem zur Konsistenz der Arithmetik. Dem überaus weit gebildeten Barrow gelingt es dabei, sich an den Grenzen naturwissenschaftlichen Wissens zu bewegen. Dort, wo die Verschmelzung mit der Philosophie stattfindet, die Ausdruck ist für unsere Suche nach dem, was die 'Welt in den Angeln' hält. Diese Grenzen verschieben sich naturgemäss im Laufe des technischen und wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts und Barrow zeigt, daß hier an dieser Grenze das eigentlich Spannende geschieht, aber auch, daß die Frage woher wir kommen, wohl niemals beantwortet werden kann.     Abstract
    Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

    Die föderalistisch geprägte Struktur des Bibliothekswesens in Deutschland ließ bisher viele Projekte an den Grenzen des eigenen Bundeslandes enden. Die technischen Möglichkeiten des Internets bieten einen besonderen Anreiz, die Vorteile länderübergreifender Zusammenarbeit zu nutzen. Der Beitrag schildert das Zustandekommen der Kooperation der nordrhein-westfälischen und bayerischen Fachhochschulbibliotheken in Bezug auf das gemeinsame, hochschulspezifische Fachinformationsangebot FINT!.

    Abstract
    Dieser Band führt in die Theorie und Forschung medialer Kommunikation ein und sucht die nunmehr traditionellen Ansätze der Massenkommunikationsforschung mit neueren Forschungsperspektiven zu verknüpfen, die sich für die digitalen und interaktiven Medien stellen. Nach einem kurzen Abriß der Mediengeschichte wird an verschiedenen Medienbegriffen gezeigt, wie weit und disparat inzwischen Forschungen zur medialen Kommunikation geworden sind und weiterhin sein werden. Unter funktionalen Gesichtspunkten werden Leistungen und Risiken medialer Kommunikation für moderne Gesellschaften diskutiert und anhand komplexer Ansätze der Stand der Forschung aufgezeigt.     Abstract
    Verglichen mit ihrer mehr als zweieinhalbtausendjährigen Geschichte handelt es sich bei der Wissenschaftstheorie um eine sehr junge Disziplin der Philosophie. Von einer Etablierug als eigenständiger Disziplin kann erst seit den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts gesprochen werden. Verständlich wird die Entwicklung dieser neuen Disziplin aber nur, wenn man sieht, daß sie auf eine grundlegende Krise der Philosophie antwortet, nämlich auf das Scheitern des Projekts abendländischer Metaphysik, und gleichzeitig den Versuch darstellt, einen undogmatischen Begriff von Wissenschaft bereitzustellen durch eine Reflexion der Bedingungen, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen gesicherten Wissens

    Abstract
    Automatische Klassifikationen von Web- und andern Textdokumenten ermöglichen es, betriebsinterne und externe Informationen geordnet zugänglich zu machen. Die Forschung zur automatischen Klassifikation hat sich in den letzten Jahren intensiviert. Das Resultat sind verschiedenen Methoden, die heute in der Praxis einzeln oder kombiniert für die Klassifikation im Einsatz sind. In der vorliegenden Lizenziatsarbeit werden neben allgemeinen Grundsätzen einige Methoden zur automatischen Klassifikation genauer betrachtet und ihre Möglichkeiten und Grenzen erörtert. Daneben erfolgt die Präsentation der Resultate aus einer Umfrage bei Anbieterrfirmen von Softwarelösungen zur automatische Klassifikation von Text-Dokumenten. Die Ausführungen dienen der myax internet AG als Basis, ein eigenes Klassifikations-Produkt zu entwickeln

    Abstract
    Dieser Beitrag legt einen Ansatz zur Integration von Wissenssystemen vor, mit dem konzeptuelle Netzwerke mit Hilfe zweier Mechanismen generiert werden: Der Mechanismus der starken Integration erzeugt ein selbstorganisierendes Netzwerk, in dem Wissenssysteme, die sich in Ergänzungs- oder Differenzierungsverhältnissen zueinander befinden, als autonome Einheiten auf ihre aktuelle Umwelt - bestehend aus einem selbstkonstituierten Gegenstandsbereich und der Gesamtmenge aller beteiligten Wissenssysteme - reagieren. Sind zwei Wissenssysteme inkompatibel, werden durch den Mechanismus der schwachen Integration Netzwerke loser Kopplung gebildet, welche ein Switchen des Beobachters zwischen den verschiedenen Interpretationsangeboten der inkompatiblen Wissenssysteme über Boundary-Elemente und deren jeweils systemspezifische Verweisungsstrukturen ermöglichen. Das SiSiFOS-Programm, das auf dem Computer diese beiden Prozesse der Netzwerkformation simuliert, testet Chancen und Grenzen konzeptueller Kooperationsmöglichkeiten zwischen Wissenssystemen. Die Anwendung des Verfahrens auf die Modellierung anschlußproblematischer Kommunikation in sozialen (Innovations-)Netzwerken moderner Wissens- und Technologieproduktion zeigt, daß die Prozesse, in denen "Konzeptgeber' Ziele und Inhalte von Forschung diskursiv aushandeln, als Abstimmungsprobleme zwischen Wissenssystemen verstanden, im Rahmen des Integrationsansatzes beschrieben und technisch simuliert werden können
