    Abstract
    Reports an empirical study at the Queriniana Civic Library, Brescia, of interaction betwee researchers and printed catalogues during bibliographic data retrieval. The study sought to ascertain frequency of catalogue use; research success rate and time taken; and to identify user profiles. Data were obtained by a mixture of questionnaires, interviews and direct observation. Findings showed that 64% of the catalogue users were female; 70% were aged 19-30; 65% were university students or had good school grades; and hardly any were working class. University students preferred keyword access. 50% or all searches were successful. Most search failures related to subject catalogues, which usually required more time.     Abstract
    Considers the 2 conflicting phenomena of disintermediation and information overload, which in the Internet era respectively pose a threat and offer an opportunity to the librarian and information science profession. User-orientated commercial products and services are tending to promote user information autonomy; but, more positively, the online electronic publication explosion has impelled librarians to cretae Net information resource catalogues, and the IT community to devise novel Internet access tools. Librarians will thus have a useful role to fulfil in both the free and fee-paying E-information sectors as cybrarians or information managers

    Abstract
    The Toolkit designed by the RDA Steering Committee makes Resource Description and Access available on the web, together with other useful documents (workflows, mappings, etc.). Reading, learning and memorizing are interconnected, and a working tool should make these activities faster and easier to perform. Some issues arise while verifying the real easiness of use and learning of the tool. The practical and formal requirements for a cataloguing code include plain language, ease of memorisation, clarity of instructions, familiarity for users, predictability and reproducibility of solutions, and general usability. From a formal point of view, the RDA text does not appear to be conceived for an uninterrupted reading, but just for reading of few paragraphs for temporary catalographic needs. From a content point of view, having a syndetic view of the description of a resource is rather difficult: catalographic details are scattered and their re-organization is not easy. The visualisation and logical organisation in the Toolkit could be improved: the table of contents occupies a sizable portion of the screen and resizing or hiding it is not easy; the indentation leaves little space to the words; inhomogeneous font styles (italic and bold) and poor contrast between background and text colours make reading not easy; simultaneous visualization of two or more parts of the text is not allowed; and Toolkit's icons are less intuitive than expected. In the conclusion, some suggestions on how to improve the Toolkit's aspects and usability are provided.

    Since an increasing variety of electronic information media and their hybrid developments is available in libraries, a unifying concept is needed to obviate the constant creation of new fonds and catalogues, and the futile search for the illusory 'definitive' electronic product. Suggests that although the Internet provides only a superficial integration of various electronic media, its central concept is the unifying one of hypertextuality, whose 4 main elements are the following: multilinearity; hypermediality; integrability; and interactiveness. Explains these ideas, and describes also Philip Barker's suggested 4 categories of the technologically advanced library: multimedia, electronic, digital and virtual.     Abstract
    Describes a proposed system for helping public library users, in praticular students, in their document searches. The system would directly involve users in compiling cards that indictae the various library sources (encyclopedias, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.) from which they retrieved bibliographic data. These cards would then be used to create a search path catalogue having 2 sections: general research topics; and keywords. Subsequently the librarian would form a database from this information. Such a system would not only benefit other researchers but also help the library to plan acquisition and rationalise its document arrangements.     A reprint of the introduction to Vol.IX of the author's 'History of Bibliography' (Storia della Bibliografia). Cites K. Popper's theory of the 3 worlds of reality, i.e the natural world; subjective experiences; and recorded information; arguing that over the past 50 years bibliography has been relegated to dealing with researches that relate to the 2nd world and has thus lost its true scientific character.     Abstract
    This paper conjectures that standard archival descriptions are no longer efficient in order to answer to society needs, mainly in an intercultural perspective. After a brief evaluation of the peculiarities of cultural heritage different domain languages, the specific issues of archival descriptions are discussed, seeking the possible strategies - technological as well as cultural - valid to open to an integration of descriptive languages. A particular focus is proposed on RDA, an approach which shows to be the best candidate to harmonize the separate descriptions typical of archival domain and activating the potential informative integrations with any limitation of information environments and single content quality.

    Abstract
    Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue. Examines 2 important USA projects for cataloguing network resources: Digital Libraries Research (funded by the National Science Foundation), which uses a combination of search engines to retrieve net data; and the Internet Public Library.
