    Abstract

    Abstract
This paper highlights some of the significant findings from author's PhD: "Factors affecting the end-use of electronic databases in public libraries." Public libraries have a wide range of different types of users who, unlike academic or special library users, are not necessarily information-trained (see Coles, 1998). Whereas the academic, special library user may have specific information needs that can be met by electronic sources, public library users do not necessarily have such specific information needs that can easily be identified and met. Most user surveys have tended to concentrate on the searching and retrieval aspect of information seeking behaviour, whereas this study's user survey focused more on how people perceived and related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). It was not how people searched a particular electronic source, in this case CD-ROM, that was of prime interest but rather whether or not people actually used them at all and the reasons why people did or did not use electronic media. There were several reasons the study looked at CD-ROM specifically. Firstly, CD-ROM is a well established technology, most people should be familiar with CD-ROM/multimedia. Secondly, CD-ROM was, at the start of the study, the only open access electronic media widely available in public libraries. As well as examining why public library users chose to use electronic sources, the paper looks at the types of CD-ROM databases used both in the library and in general Also examined are what sort of searches users carried out. Where appropriate some of the problems inherent in studying end-users in public libraries and the difficulty in getting reliable data, are discussed. Several methods were used to collect the data. I wished to avoid limiting research to a small sample of library sites, the aim was to be as broad in scope as possible. There were two main groups of people 1 wished to look at: non-users as well as CD-ROM users

    Abstract
The study explores the role of information and information seeking in the Research and Development Department of an international oil and gas company. The information seeking patterns of engineers and research scientists at Statoil's Research Centre, in Trondheim, Norway were studied in relation to their research activities in different phases and types of project. The project phases were evaluation of alternative solutions; development and testing; and summary of experiences. The project types were incremental; radical; and fundamental. Eight major characteristics were identified in the patterns: surveying; chaining; monitoring; browsing; distinguishing; filtering; extracting and ending. The study analyses the requirements for different types of information in an environment where the need for internal and external resources are intertwined; it also compares features of the information seeking patterns of engineers and research scientists from this and previous studies. It was found that, although there were differences in the features of the information seeking patterns of the research scientists and engineers, the behavioural characteristics were similar; and the study identified identical or very similar categories of information seeking behaviour to those of previous studies of academic researchers.

    Abstract
Early in 1997, the US Research Libraries Group (RLG) opened up a new searching option to its RLIN (Research Library Information Network) bibliographic databases, its CitaDel files, and the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC). The RLG searching interface Eureka now makes all 3 of them available through WWW browsers, as well as through Zephyr, RLG's Z39.50 server

    Abstract
Although at first sight the WWW appears to have the potential for making printed reference sources obsolete, a systematic study of 104 reference questions, at the West Virginia Library Commission, demonstrated that, although the WWW is a powerful source of information, at the present time it is not a source that will answer a majority of reference questions. The WWW is strong in some categories of referenc equestions and weak in others. Time spent searching the WWW is another factor that must be taken into consideration by reference librarians. Concludes that it is not a wise decision to discard a reference book that will answer a question in 5 minutes when it will take 20 minutes to find the answer on the Web

    Abstract
Outlines the activities involved in developing a community on line information system and the not for profit organisation which was established to run it. The catalyst for the system was Rockford Public Library, Illinois and includes the mission statement, guiding principles, policy statements, standing committees and their goals and objectives during the first year of operation. Funding, staffing, users, and information providers are also discussed. The Sinnissippi Valley Information Network now provides the local community with access to the Internet, a wide range of state information such as property tax records, council minuates and library holdings, as well as WEB pages. The only area of disappointment has been the lack of interest by schools. Sets out 11 suggestions for those considering starting a similar venture

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
Libraries and the information community have moved rapidly into an era of powerful networked scholarly workstations, large quantities of information accessible in electronic formats, and dispersed information sources connected to regional and national networks. This rich diversity poses new challenges for the provision of appropriate reference services. The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries successfully implemented and tested a prototype solution to the problem of providing reference assistance to scholars who are accessing networked information resources and who are at locations remote from expert librarians. Librarians were able to intervene directly in information access and retrieval sessions, remotely assisting the user during the real-time, online process. The testbed for the project was a CD-ROM network delivering US government information to DOS workstations via Ethernets connected to a routed TCP/IP wide-area network and utilizing off-the-shelf remote control software. Although problems with existing technology were discovered, this mode of providing reference assistance is a valid model for future services
