    Abstract
The scale of web site design has grown so that what was once comparable to decorating a room is now comparable to designing buildings or even cities. Designing sites so that people can find their way around is an ever-growing challenge as sites contain more and more information. In the past, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web has helped developers and designers establish consistent and usable structures for their sites and their information. This edition of the classic primer on web site design and navigation is updated with recent examples, new scenarios, and new information on best practices. Readers will learn how to present large volumes of information to visitors who need to find what they're looking for quickly. With topics that range from aesthetics to mechanics, this valuable book explains how to create interfaces that users can understand easily.

    Abstract
Presents a simple server side concept for building hierarchical guided tour structures in the WWW using any existing WWW pages. The pages used within a tour need not be aware of being used. They may occur multiple times within several tours. Presents a server based implementation as a demonstration

    Abstract

    Abstract
Presents an approach that integrates searching and browsing in a manner that improves both paradigms. When browsing is the primary task, it enables semantic content-based tailoring of Web maps in both the generation as well as the visualization phases. When search is the primary task, it enables contextualization of the results by augmenting them with the documents' neighbourhoods. This approach is embodied in WebCutter, a client-server system fully integrated with Web software. WebCutter consists of a map generator running off a standard Web server and a map visualization client implemented as a Java applet runalble from any standard Web browser and requiring no installation or external plug-in application. WebCutter is in beta stage and is in the process of being integrated into the Lotus Domino application product line

    Abstract
Proposes a generic architecture which adheres to the existing standards and client/server model and alleviates the performance handicap of classical relational database gateways. The performance evaluation revealed a noteworthy superiority of the proposed architecture with respect to monolithic Common Gateway Interface based approaches

    Abstract
Reports on experiences using WebSQL, a high level declarative query language for extracting information from the WWW. WebSQL takes advantage of multiplex index servers without requiring users to know about them, and integrates full-text with topology-based queries. Illustrates the use of WebSQL for application development by describing 2 applications: Web site maintenance and specialized index construction. Sketches several other possible applications. Using the library implements a client-server architecture that allows performance of interactive intelligent searches on the Web from an applet running on a browser

    Abstract
Describes a WWW based system which allows users to view, search and post geographically indexed information of the Earth. 2 geographic browsers have been developed: a 2D map browser capable of continuous scroll and zoom of an arbitrarily large sheet and a 3D flight-simulator browser capable of continuous flight around the Earth. On the server side, a geographical and geometrical server has been developed which contains large databases of images, elevations, lines, points and polygons stored in tiles structured into hierarchical pyramids or quadtrees. A metadata server has also been developed which contains URL pointers and geographical coordinates of various WWW documents, geographical information and geometrical models

    Abstract
The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of the newest tools available to assist in the navigation of the Internet. As with other client/server network tools such as Gopher and WAIS, developments with the Web are in a dynamic state of change. Basically, WWW is an effort to organize information on the Internet plus local information into a set of hypertext documents; a person navigates the network by moving from one document to another via a set of hypertext links

    Abstract
Some web sites "work" and some don't. Good web site consultants know that you can't just jump in and start writing HTML, the same way you can't build a house by just pouring a foundation and putting up some walls. You need to know who will be using the site, and what they'll be using it for. You need some idea of what you'd like to draw their attention to during their visit. Overall, you need a strong, cohesive vision for the site that makes it both distinctive and usable. Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is about applying the principles of architecture and library science to web site design. Each web site is like a public building, available for tourists and regulars alike to breeze through at their leisure. The job of the architect is to set up the framework for the site to make it comfortable and inviting for people to visit, relax in, and perhaps even return to someday. Most books on web development concentrate either on the aesthetics or the mechanics of the site. This book is about the framework that holds the two together. With this book, you learn how to design web sites and intranets that support growth, management, and ease of use. Special attention is given to: * The process behind architecting a large, complex site * Web site hierarchy design and organization Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is for webmasters, designers, and anyone else involved in building a web site. It's for novice web designers who, from the start, want to avoid the traps that result in poorly designed sites. It's for experienced web designers who have already created sites but realize that something "is missing" from their sites and want to improve them. It's for programmers and administrators who are comfortable with HTML, CGI, and Java but want to understand how to organize their web pages into a cohesive site. The authors are two of the principals of Argus Associates, a web consulting firm. At Argus, they have created information architectures for web sites and intranets of some of the largest companies in the United States, including Chrysler Corporation, Barron's, and Dow Chemical.

    Abstract
The goal of our Group Asynchronous Browsing (GAB) research is to provide tools for people to leverage the information hunting and gathering activities of other people or groups of people on the World Wide Web. To date we have focused on taking advantage of the personal subject indices that are being constructed today with bookmarks or hotlists of widely available browsers and also on monitoring URLs that may themselves serve as living resources on particular subject areas. In support of the former, we have created a server that collects and merges bookmark/hotlist files of participating users and then can serve (subsets) of these merged bookmark files to either standard HTML client browsers or to a client built with the multiscale visualization tool Pad++. For the latter, we have built a tool called WebWatch that can monitor URLs of interest and alert users when significant updates appear.

    Abstract
The WWW can be used to interface with database servers, thus allowing the searcher to use an off the shelf web browser to search for information on an unfamiliar database server. The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is the most widely used technique to accomplish this purpose. CGI is a set of rules for passing information from a web server to an external program, which allows the passing of a search request to an external database service, which would otherwise not be web compatible, and the return of data which is then formatted for vieweing on the web browser. Outlines the advantages and limitations of this technique, describes some library applications and lists sources of information on CGI

    Abstract
To access a remote catalogue the searcher can use the Z39.50 standard as interface, which requires appropriate software; or for databases accessible on the WWW use a common gateway interface. The multibase access advantage of Z39.50 can also be obtained through a Web navigator by inserting a Web server/Z39.50 client software connector: this can be located either on the search site, in an intermediary position or on the database site, so determining the range of databases which can be searched. Z39.50 also offers interesting possibilities for joint and local cataloguing: multibase searching can equally be realised on intranets
