    Abstract
Free text and controlled vocabulary searching can no longer be viewed as antagonistic techniques in information retrieval since they both display advantages and weaknesses dependent on a fairly wide range of context, with the option to use both increasingly favoured. An attempt is made to present a list of features associated with the two techniques and to suggest a methodology to assist in deciding on the optimal retrieval technique for a particular purpose. The relevance of the techniques in expert systems and full text contexts is also discussed. Finally, recommendations for further research are suggested, concentrating on survey techniques in real-life retrieval situations

    Abstract

    Abstract
Contribution to a specific section on library automation and software. Discusses different kinds of text retrieval systems and how they may overlap, covering: retrieval of document surrogates; retrieval of individual passages of texts; retrieval of complete documents or pages within them; and hypertext and expert systems.

    Abstract
This article explores the idea of using a conventional string indexing source description, together with a special phrase generator, to generate multiple descriptor phrases for inclusion in a database record for online retrieval. For use with proximity operators, these multiple descriptor phrases should attempt to meet such objectives as bringing together groups of syntactically related words. Software for generating multiple descriptor phrases from source descriptions in a specific existing string indexing system is briefly described

    Abstract
Reviews the research that led to the development of a hierarchic scheme of terms with vocabulary control features, called Classaurus, and describes a project aimed at writing software that could be used for the automatic generation of an online alphabetic Classaurus. The problems encountered are discussed and suggestions for further research are made.

    Abstract
This article reports on a comparison of the postcoordinate retrieval effectiveness of two indexing languages: LCSH and PRECIS. The effect of augmenting each with title words was also studies. The database for the study was over 15.000 UK MARC records. Users returned 5.326 relevant judgements for citations retrieved for 61 SDI profiles, representing a wide variety of subjects. Results are reported in terms of precision and relative recall. Pure/applied sciences data and social science data were analyzed separately. Cochran's significance tests for ratios were used to interpret the findings. Recall emerged as the more important measure discriminating the behavior of the two languages. Addition of title words was found to improve recall of both indexing languages significantly. A direct relationship was observed between recall and exhaustivity. For the social sciences searches, recalls from PRECIS alone and from PRECIS with title words were significantly higher than those from LCSH alone and from LCSH with title words, respectively. Corresponding comparisons for the pure/applied sciences searches revealed no significant differences

    Abstract
To an overwhelming extent, storage and retrieval systems were designed for information intermediaries who were specialists in formal, controlled documentation languages (e.g. classification systems, indexing languages) and who were then trained to utilize the query language of each retrieval system. However, with the advent of the microcomputer, there now exists, in the information retrieval industry, an obvious will to tackle both the professional and the personal information markets, as evidences by their more sophisticated yet more user-friendly systems and by the design and marketing of all sorts of interface software (front-end, gateway, intermediary). In order to make full advantage of these systems, the user must be able to master three different languages: the natural language of the discipline, the indexing language, and the system's query language. The author defines and characterizes each of these languages and identifies their issues and trends in the IR cycle and specifically in public online search services. Finally he proposes a theoretical model for the analysis of IR languages and suggests a few research avenues

    Abstract
Symbolic indexing and retrieval for effective searches of digitised images still seem to be frontier areas. Explains some criteria and concepts for searches of digitised images, refers to commercial software currently available for handling image data bases with alphanumeric indexing, and lists areas for research.
