    Abstract
    Obgleich "Wahrheit" ein Thema der Philosophie seit ihren historischen Anfängen war, haben sich mit besonderem Gewicht in der Gegenwart, "Wahrheitstheorien" als eigenes philosophisches Teilgebiet unseres Jahrhunderts etabliert, seit in der Philosophie der sogenannte linguistic turn stattgefunden hat. Auslöser dieser Wende waren einerseits das verstärkte Auseinanderdriften von Philosophie und den sogenannten exakten Wissenschaften (vor allem Mathematik und Physik), andererseits die Entwicklung, daß diese modernen Wissenschaften den Philosophien traditionelle Zuständigkeiten streitig machten, um sogleich, in begriffliche Grundlagenkrisen geratend, neue philosophische Fragen und Probleme zu produzieren. Galt Wahrheit seit der Antike als etwas Absolutes und Unumstößliches, unabhängig davon, ob der Mensch Wahrheit zu erkennen vermag oder nicht, so findet der Wahrheitssuchende heute einen Dschungel von Ansätzen, Vorschlägen, Antworten, Problematisierungen und Skeptizismen. In dieser Situation wählt der Marburger Philosoph Peter Janich einen Mittelweg zwischen Absolutheitsanspruch und bloßem Relativismus, den er die "kulturalistische Lösung" nennt. Denn bei der Besinnung auf die Möglichkeit des Erkennens von Wahrheit stellt sich heraus, daß die Menschheit nicht am Mullpunkt der Wahrheitssuche steht, sondern daß das Fragliche immer relativ zum praktisch Bewährten zu sehen ist. Zugleich stellt sich heraus, daß die Wahrheit kein menschenunabhängiger Selbstzweck ist, sondern daß sie Menschen dazu dient, sich in der Welt einzurichten und zurechtzufinden: In der kulturalistischen Sicht wird Wahrheit vom Selbstzweck zum Mittel.

    Abstract
    In den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften herrscht die Überzeugung vor, soziale und kulturelle Phänomene seien autonom und änderten sich eigengesetzlich. Ein verkürztes Verständnis der Konstruktivität menschlichen Wahrnehmens und Denkens verstärkt diese Gewissheit. Damit vernachlässigt man die Frage nach den Wirklichkeitskonstrukteuren und danach, ob sie nicht evoluierte anthropologische und sozial bedingte Gemeinsamkeiten (Bedürfnisse, Handlungstendenzen, Präferenzen, ästhetische Vorlieben u.Ä.) aufweisen, die ihre individuellen und sozialen Konstruktionen beeinflussen und zur Konstruktion von Universalien führen. Der Band diskutiert diese These mit Beiträgen aus der Soziologie, Psychologie, Philosophie, Anthropologie, Linguistik, Medizin-, Kunst- und Literaturgeschichte.

    Abstract
    Seit Descartes gehört das Wissen, das wir von unseren eigenen psychischen Zuständen und Vorgängen besitzen, zu den meistdiskutierten Themen der Erkenntnistheorie. Was genau heißt es, in diesem Sinne über "Selbstbewußtsein" zu verfügen? Das Buch fragt, wie tragfähig jene Antworten sind, nach denen wir uns eines epistemisch privilegierten Zugangs zu den eigenen Gedanken und Bewußtseinsinhalten erfreuen. Das "Bewußtsein seiner selbst", so bemerkte indessen schon Kant in diesem Kontext, manifestiert sich in der Fähigkeit eines Subjektes, sich als ein Ich zu denken und "ich" zu sich zu sagen. Selbstbewußtsein haben Wesen demnach, allgemein gesprochen, wenn sie sich in der Ersten Person Singular auf sich beziehen können. Erst in jüngerer Zeit sind die Besonderheiten dieser Form der Selbstreferenz zum Gegenstand ausgiebiger sprachphilosophischer Untersuchungen geworden. Das Buch versucht, diese bedeutungstheoretischen Diskussionen für einige klassische Fragen der Selbstbewußtseinstheorie fruchtbar zu machen.

    Abstract
    DAS STANDARDWERK in der Philosophie des Geistes seit 10 Jahren - jetzt in 5. Auflage mit einer um mehr als 60 Seiten erweiterten Bibliographie, die Publikationen zur Philosophie des Geistes und angrenzender Disziplinen von 1970-2004 erfaßt (über 2700 Titel). Kann man sich vorstellen, dass so etwas wie bewusstes Erleben auf der Grundlage physikalischer Vorgänge entstehen konnte? Sind subjektives Empfinden und das Entstehen einer Innenperspektive überhaupt als Bestandteil der natürlichen Ordnung der Dinge denkbar - oder werden wir an dieser Stelle mit einem letztlich unauflöslichen Mysterium konfrontiert, mit einem weissen Fleck auf der Landkarte des wissenschaftlichen Weltbildes, der vielleicht aus prinzipiellen Gründen immer ein weisser Fleck bleiben muss?     Abstract
    Als der Neurowissenschaftler Maxwell Bennett und der Philosoph Peter Hacker 2003 den voluminösen Band Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience veröffentlichten, war dies nicht nur die erste systematische Untersuchung der begrifflichen Grundlagen der Neurowissenschaften. Es war auch der Startschuß für den bis heute intensiv geführten Kampf um die Deutungsmacht in bezug auf den menschlichen Geist. Besonders kritisch fiel seinerzeit die Auseinandersetzung der beiden Autoren mit den einflußreichen Arbeiten von Daniel Dennett und John Searle aus - also mit jenen beiden Denkern, die von der neurowissenschaftlichen Seite gerne als philosophische Gewährsmänner herangezogen werden. Mit Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie ist nun das Kunststück gelungen, die vier kongenialen »Streithähne« in einem Band zu versammeln. Im ersten Teil des Buches wird das zentrale Argument von Bennett und Hacker präsentiert, das unter anderem jene begrifflichen Verwirrungen offenlegt, denen Neurowissenschaftler allzu häufig unterliegen, wenn sie aus ihren empirischen Forschungen die bekannten weitreichenden Schlußfolgerungen etwa über das Wesen des Menschen ziehen. Der zweite und dritte Teil sind ganz der Debatte gewidmet: Auf die Einwände von Dennett und Searle folgen erneute Erwiderungen von Bennett und Hacker. Den Abschluß bildet ein kurzer Epilog von Maxwell Bennett, gerahmt wird das Ganze durch eine Einleitung und eine Schlußbetrachtung des Philosophen Daniel Robinson. Der Band zeigt vier Meister ihres Fachs in einem Duell auf höchstem Niveau, ausgetragen mit einem gehörigen Schuß Leidenschaft. Darüber hinaus bietet er eine ausgezeichnete und vor allem gut lesbare Zusammenfassung über den Stand der Dinge in einer der wichtigsten Science Battles unserer Zeit.     Abstract
    Nach seinem bahnbrechenden Werk »Expressive Vernunft«, das Jürgen Habermas als »Meilenstein in der theoretischen Philosophie« bezeichnete, widmet sich Brandom in diesem Buch nun einem zentralen Thema seiner Philosophie, der Klärung des Gebrauchs und Gehalts von Begriffen. Zwei grundlegende Ideen sind dabei entscheidend: Über einen spezifischen begrifflichen Gehalt zu verfügen bedeutet für Brandom, eine bestimmte Rolle im Schlußfolgern zu spielen. Und: Die expressive Rolle des logischen Vokabulars liegt darin, die inferentiellen Beziehungen der Begriffe untereinander explizit zu machen. Ausgehend von diesen Thesen gelingt Brandom eine überraschende Klärung solch wichtiger philosophischer Probleme wie u.a. Normativität, die Intentionalität und Repräsentionalität des Denkens und Sprechens oder die Objektivität begrifflichen Gehalts. »Begründen und Begreifen« kann als Einführung in die Philosophie Brandoms gelesen werden.

    Abstract
    Im Frühjahr 2000 begann Susan Blackmore, Material für ein Radiofeature zum Thema Bewußtsein zu sammeln. Die Sendung kam nie zustande, aber die Idee, sich einem der großen Rätsel der menschlichen Existenz in Gesprächen zu nähern, ließ sie nicht mehr los. So entstanden zwanzig Interviews mit Philosophen und Naturwissenschaftlern, der Crème de la Crème der internationalen Bewußtseinsforschung, die hier Rede und Antwort steht. David Chalmers zum Beispiel, der erklärt, warum das Bewußtsein ein solch schwieriges Problem ist, oder Susan Greenfield, der zufolge man schon bei Sophokles und Euripides Interessantes über Willensfreiheit lernen kann. Francisco Varela spricht über Zombies, Roger Penrose über John Searle, John Searle über Immanuel Kant. Wir erfahren von Vilayanur Ramachandran, warum er nicht meditiert, und von Thomas Metzinger, inwiefern das bewußte Selbst eine Illusion ist. Und im letzten Interview vor seinem Tod rekapituliert Francis Crick seinen Weg von der Genetik zur Bewußtseinsforschung. Es geht um den Geist und um die Gene, um das Gehirn und die Gefühle, aber auch um Quantenprozesse und Träume, Descartes und Shiva, Kabbala und Drogenpolitik - und nicht zuletzt um Forscherkarrieren und Lebensträume.

    Abstract
    In der aktuellen Diskussion um das Bewusstsein und seine materiellen Trägerprozesse ist die Stimme der Phänomenologie selten zu vernehmen. Dabei ist für jede Art wissenschaftlichen Zugriffs auf das Thema "Bewusstsein" die Berücksichtigung seiner phänomenalen, subjektiv erlebbaren Aspekte unentbehrlich. Dies gilt für evolutionsbiologische, psychologische, neuro-physiologische Untersuchungen ebenso wie für die indirekten Thematisierungen durch Sprachanalyse und "Künstliche-Intelligenz-Forschung". Dieses Buch bündelt mit einer zusammenschauenden Einleitung Einzelstudien zu einer "konkreten Phänomenologie" menschlichen Bewusstseins, die in über dreissig Jahren des Umgangs mit dieser Thematik entstanden sind. Bewusstsein wird grundsätzlich als Manifestation des Lebens überhaupt verstanden - mit einer Evolution vom einfachsten Innewerden bis zur vieldimensionalen Bewusstseinssphäre beim Menschen. Behandelt werden hier aber vorwiegend Strukturen und Leistungen komplexer bewusstseinsgetragener Prozesse, die für die intersubjektive, kumulative Kulturentwicklung konstitutiv sind, aber im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs meist unterbelichtet bleiben - z.B. die Rolle von Bewusstsein in der Selbststeuerung ("Freiheit") des Handelns, in Intelligenzleistungen, im Zeiterleben, im Schönheitserfahren, im vergleichenden und intuitiv-diskursiven Erkennen, in geschichtlicher Sinngebung und utopischer Phantasie. "Metaphysische" Ausblicke gelten der möglichen kosmischen Bedeutung von Bewusstsein als Urmedium des Welt-Erscheinens.

    Abstract
    Das menschliche Denken organisiert sich ständig in komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Emotionen und Erkenntnissen. Für das Verständnis dieser Prozesse schlägt Ciompi ein Modell vor, da über die vertraute kausale Logik weit hinausführt Emotion und Kognition wirken zusammen in einem unablässigen Prozeß der Selbstschöpfung, die sich mit ihr eigener Kraft wieder und wieder selbstähnlich hervorzubringen vermag. Erstmals in der Geschichte des Denkens über das menschliche Denken stehen Philosophie, Psychologie und die jüngsten Erkenntnisse der Neurobiologie nicht mehr unvermittelt nebeneinander. In Ciompis Erkenntnis einer fraktalen Affektlogik heben sich ihre Widersprüche auf.
