- Abstract
- Jeder Mensch kommuniziert. Das macht ihn zum homo sapiens mit Verstand und Sinn, zugleich bereitet ihm Kommunikation viele Probleme. Als Massenkommunikation über Medien ist Kommunikation längst zu Markt, Produktionsfaktor und gesellschaftlicher Macht geworden. Ständig kommen neue Medien hinzu, die Kommunikation verbreiten, vervielfältigen, erleichtern und verschönern wollen. Doch auch deren Zeichen und Botschaften müssen jeweils kommuniziert werden. So ist Kommunikation sowohl ein geläufiges, mitunter leeres Schlagwort wie auch ein spannendes und bedeutendes Denk- und Handlungsfeld, mit dem sich jeder im Alltag, aber auch fast alle Wissenschaftsdisziplinen befassen. Das Studienbuch will in dieses komplexe, kaum abgrenzbare Feld mit all seinen Aspekten einführen und zieht dazu möglichst viele Erklärungsansätze der Wissenschaften heran. Mehrfach wird die individuelle Reflexion angesprochen. So soll die persönliche, immer schon vorhandene kommunikative Kompetenz ebenso erkundet werden, wie sich wichtige theoretische Konzepte und empirische Befunde vorstellen lassen

- Abstract
- Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) ist neben William James einer der Begründer des Pragmatismus und der Wegbereiter einer ebenso weitgreifenden wie radikalen Zeichentheorie. »We think only in signs«, heißt es bei ihm. Und in der Tat: Ist ein Denken denkbar, das ohne Zeichen auskäme? Ludwig Nagls Einführung macht mit den Grundbegriffen der Peirceschen Zeichentheorie bekannt und zeigt, inwiefern sein Pragmatismus, die Kategorienlehre, die Wissenschaftstheorie und die spekulative Evolutionsphilosophie auf den Begriff der Semiosis, den stetigen Prozeß der Zeichenverknüpfung, zu beziehen sind. Heute ist Peirce von aktuellem Interesse wegen seiner scharfen Opposition zum cartesianischen »Bewußtseinsparadigma«, in die ihn seine Semiotik hineintrieb, und wegen des Vermögens seiner Philosophie, spekulatives Denken zuzulassen, ohne dabei die Rolle von Logik und Experiment zu schmälern. Es ist ein Denken, das die Blockaden zu durchbrechen vermag, die die sprachanalytische Philosophie in den Köpfen errichtet hat.

- Abstract
- Dieses Werk ist der Wissenschaft gewidmet, der Geschichte und über die Logik der Forschung, über die Rolle, die die Hypothesen spielen und die Einbildungskraft und über die Methode der Nachprüfung. Es gibt Bücher, die werden als Klassiker bezeichnet, weil sie zwei Eigenschaften haben: (1) Jeder ist der Meinung, dieses Buch müsse man gelesen haben, und (2) niemand hat es wirklich gelesen. Im Zeitablauf bildet sich dann der Mythos, dieses Werk zähle zur Rubrik der Klassiker oder Must-Reads. Karl Poppers "Klassiker" (im positiven Sinne) gehört mit Sicherheit in diese Kategorie. Schade ist daran, daß "Logik der Forschung" aus diesem Grunde scheinbar mit einer ungebührlichen Ehrfurcht und Scheu betrachtet wird. Dabei ist es nicht nur verständlich geschrieben, sondern in Teilen geradezu unterhaltsam zu lesen! (Das glaubt jetzt wahrscheinlich wieder keiner!) "Logik der Forschung" bietet jedem wissenschaftlich Interessierten einen grundlegenden Zugang zu den Methoden der empirischen Wissenschaft. Dort, wo viele Bücher über wissenschaftliche und/oder statistische Methoden anfangen, geht Popper noch einen oder zwei Schritte zurück, indem er dem Leser erst einmal plausibel macht, WARUM es eigentlich nötig ist, Althergebrachtes neu zu hinterfragen und sich von traditionellen Vorstellungen zu lösen. Jedem, der wissenschaftlich arbeiten oder nur kritisch denken will, sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt. Denn jede noch so moderne wissenschaftliche Methode läßt sich nicht zweckmäßig anwenden und vor allem interpretieren, wenn einem nicht z.B. die Induktionsproblematik geläufig ist, die Tatsache, daß sich Theorien und Modelle empirisch nicht verifizieren, sondern nur falsifizieren lassen. (Nach dem Motto: "Ich habe bisher nur schwarze Raben gesehen, also sind alle Raben schwarz!") Dieses Buch schult den kritischen Geist und ist deshalb eigentlich für jeden interessant. Darüber hinaus ist es wirklich gut geschrieben, vor allem im ersten Teil. Eine wirklich lohnende Investition. Laßt es nicht zum verstaubten "Klassiker" verkommen!!!

- "Dieses Buch enthält eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen, in denen ich Fragen wie die folgenden zu beantworten suche; Was heißt es zu erkennen? Was tun wir, wenn wir von Realität oder dem Realen sprechen? Was behaupten wir, wenn wir von Objektivität sprechen? Wie vollzieht sich Beobachten? Um zu verstehen, wie wir Menschen leben, sind Fragen wie diese meines Erachtens grundlegend. Es sind Fragen, die sich auf biologische Phänomene beziehen und biologisch beantwortet werden müssen. Genau dies tue ich in den hier vorgelegten Aufsätzen: Ich entwickle eine biologische Theorie des Erkennens. Und zwar beantworte ich die Fragen, um die es in diesen Aufsätzen geht, als Wissenschaftler nicht als Philosoph. Natürlich reflektiere ich über das, was ich tue, und über die Gültigkeit dessen, was ich sage, und insofern philosophiere ich, aber ich beantworte die Fragen über Kognition und Realität als Fragen, die es mit der Biologie des menschlichen Lebens zu tun haben, ich beantworte sie als Wissenschaftler und entwickle eine wissenschaftliche Theorie des Erkennens." Nach dem inzwischen berühmten Text "Biologie der Kognition" enthält der Band: "Biologie der Sprache. Die Epistemologie der Realität"; "Ontologie des Beobachtens. Die biologischen Grundlagen des Selbstbewußtseins und des physikalischen Bereichs der Existenz"; "Realität. Die Suche nach Objektivität oder die Suche nach dem zwingenden Argument"; "Ontologie wissenschaftlicher Erklärungen"; " Ontologie der Konversationen". Maturanas "genialischer Welt- und Seinsentwurf" (G. Roth) hat sich bereits als äußerst fruchtbar erwiesen. Seine Ideen sind in ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen produktiv aufgegriffen worden: in Philosophie, Psychologie und Soziologie, Physik, Medizin und Neurophysiologie, Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Rechtswissenschaft, Sprach-, Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft.

- Abstract
- Multimedia wird unser Leben vermutlich ähnlich einschneidend verändern, wie der Buchdruck im 15. Jahrhundert unsere gesamte Kultur revolutioniert hat. Welche Veränderungen die neue Kommunikationstechnologie bringen wird, hängt nicht nur von der Hard- und Software der Multimediasysteme ab, sondern auch von der Hard- und Software des Menschen - von Gehirnprozessen und psychologischen 'Programmen' beim Denken, Wahrnehmen und Fühlen. Die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen multimedialer Information werden deutlich, wenn man sich etwa vor Augen führt, wie viel Information wir allein beim Sehen ausblenden, wie wir Information im Gedächtnis abspeichern, wie wir verschiedenen Sinne synchronisieren. Auch für Medien gilt: Weniger ist manchmal mehr. Wenn man das Buch in die Hand nimmt und die Demonstrationsprogramme auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM dazu anschaut, wird man verstehen, warum es immer noch gewinnbringend ist, ein Buch zu lesen, und warum es durch ein elektronisches Medium sinnvoll ergänzt werden kann

- Abstract
- Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S. - Abstract
- Als "Technopol" bezeichnet Postman die Beherrschung einer Zivilisation durch Technik und technizistisches Denken, eine Entwicklung, die der New Yorker Medien-Prof. in den USA am weitesten fortgeschritten sieht. Die Folgen für Individuum und Gesellschaft illustriert er, wie immer in glänzender Diktion und mit sarkastischem Witz, u.a. an der Informationsschwemme, der Apparate-Medizin und der Computertechnologie. Das Schlusskapitel, immerhin, weckt ein Fünkchen Hoffnung auf möglichen Widerstand. Postmans neue Streitschrift (mit Anmerkungen, Bibliographie), thematisch an "Die Verweigerung der Hörigkeit" anknüpfend, reicht weder an die grossen Zeitdiagnosen eines G. Anders heran noch an J. Weizenbaums grundlegende Analyse der "Macht der Computer". Dennoch dürfen Postmans zeitgemässe Kassandrarufe inzwischen allgemeiner Aufmerksamkeit sicher sein.

- Abstract
- Dieser Band gibt einen Überblick über 500 Jahre deutsche Buchhandelsgeschichte, über das Schreiben, Herstellen, Verkaufen und Lesen von Büchern. Angesprochen werden nicht nur Fachleute, sondern alle, die Interesse an Büchern und Literatur haben. Buchhandelsgeschichte bedeutet für Wittmann nicht nur eine Geschichte der (Sortiments-)Buchhandlungen. Buchhandel meint hier die Gesamtprozesse der Vermittlung von geistigem Kulturgut eines Autors über die materielle Speicherung dieses geistigen Produkts in Form von Büchern, die Finanzierung und Verbreitung durch Verlage und Sortimentsbuchhandlungen bis hin zum Leser. Wittmann teilt das von ihm behandelte halbe Jahrtausend seit Erfindung des Buchdrucks in zwölf Epochen auf und geht in jedem seiner Kapitel eben nicht nur auf Fragen der Herstellung und Verbreitung von Büchern ein (also die eigentliche Druck-, Verlags- und Buchhandelsgeschichte), sondern stellt auch jeweils fundierte Reflexionen über das Bild und die Rolle von Autoren sowie die Erwartungshaltungen, Vorlieben und Kenntnisse der Leser an. Dieser weite Blickwinkel bedingt natürlich, dass das dargebotenen Material für die jeweiligen Epochen nicht sehr ausführlich sein kann. Wittmann beschränkt sich häufig auf prägnante Beispiele für die jeweiligen Forschungsperspektiven. Seine Vorgehensweise bietet jedoch andererseits einen großen Vorteil: Dieses Buch ist eine interessante Lektüre nicht nur für Leute, die sich direkt für Buchhandelsgeschichte interessieren, sondern auch für solche, die einen Blick auf den Wandel des Autoren- und Leserbildes in der deutschen Gesellschaft der letzten 500 Jahre werfen wollen.
