- Abstract
- Keine wissenschaftliche Debatte ist in den letzten Jahren mit soviel Vehemenz in der Öffentlichkeit ausgetragen worden, wie der Streit um die Willensfreiheit. Der traditionelle Begriff von "Willensfreiheit", der auch dem deutschen Strafrecht und seinem Schuldbegriff zugrundeliegt, setzt voraus, daß Menschen jenseits aller psychologischen und neurobiologischen Determinanten entscheiden und handeln können. Eine solche Konzeption von Willensfreiheit ist weder begrifflich-philosophisch noch empirisch akzeptabel. In diesem Buch entwickeln Gerhard Roth und Michael Pauen gemeinsam ein neues Konzept der Willensfreiheit. Grundlage ist ein "aufgeklärter Naturalismus", der vorwissenschaftliche Phänomene, philosophische Begriffe und wissenschaftliche Methoden gleichermaßen ernst nimmt. Hieraus ergibt sich ein Verständnis von Freiheit, das die Fähigkeit zu selbstbestimmtem Handeln auf der Basis eigener Wünsche und Überzeugungen in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Roth und Pauen entgehen damit den Schwierigkeiten vieler traditioneller Konzeptionen, erfassen das Alltagsverständnis von Willensfreiheit und werden zugleich auch den Erkenntnissen der Neurobiologie gerecht. Ihr Konzept, so argumentieren die Autoren, macht zudem ein wesentlich differenzierteres Verständnis von Schuld und Verantwortung möglich, aus dem sich weitreichende Konsequenzen für das Strafrecht und den Strafvollzug ergeben. "Freie Handlungen dürfen weder unter Zwang noch unter vollständiger Determination vollzogen werden. Wir bezeichnen diese Forderung als Autonomieprinzip, aber Handlungen, die wir frei nennen, dürfen auch nicht zufällig sein."

- Abstract
- Unter Rückgriff auf die klassische Vertragstheorie von Locke, Rousseau, vor allem aber Kant, und mit Hilfe eines in den modernen Wissenschaften zunehmend bedeutsamen Denk- und Sprachrahmens, dem der Entscheidungs- und Spieltheorie, entwickelt Rawls zwei Prinzipien der Gerechtigkeit und wendet sie dann auf die Grundinstitutionen moderner Gesellschaften an. Dabei geht es (u.a. auch) um das politisch aktuelle Problem, ob und unter welchen Bedingungen man auch einer demokratisch gewählten Regierung Widerstand leisten dürfe.

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- "Im Grunde ist Napoleon schuld. Seine Kontinentalsperre verdarb Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus den Handel mit englischen Wollstoffen en gros in Amsterdam. Um in der Stadt bleiben zu können und nicht in die Enge seines westfälischen Pastorenelternhauses zurückzumüssen, widmete sich Brockhaus ab 1805 seiner "Lieblingsneigung`; so die Firmengeschichte, eröffnete eine Buchhandlung und begründete eine Instanz des Bildungsbürgertums bis ins 21. Jahrhundert: den Brockhaus. Das unvollständige "Conversationslexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeiten", seit 1796 von Renatus Gotthelf Löbel und Christian Wilhelm Franke verfasst und 1808 von Brockhaus ergänzt und herausgebracht, war das erste seiner Art. Deswegen schien es nötig, seine Funktion in einem Vorwort dem Leser zu erklären. Das Lexikon, so hieß es, solle "dem Weib wie dem Mann, dem Nichtgelehrten wie dem Gelehrten ... eine Art von Schlüssel" zur Verfügung stellen, "um sich den Eingang in gebildete Zirkel" zu verschaffen. Eine Beihilfe für Emporkömmlinge also. Allerdings war das Werk kein Geniestreich der Autoren. Sein Vorbild waren die "Zeitungslexika" ` des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, die als Lesehilfe für "dunkle Wörter" dienen sollten. Und die großen Universallexika der Zeit, die allein von ihrem Umfang, intellektuellen Anspruch und Preis her nicht für ein breites Publikum bestimmt waren.
Diese Verhältnisse durchbrach Brockhaus mit einer schlichten Rechnung: Von 100 Millionen deutschsprachigen Europäern sind 75 Millionen Frauen und Kinder, die entfielen ihm zufolge als Käufer. Von den restlichen 25 Millionen sollte jeder 25. - also die Bildungs- und Besitzbürger - ein Konversationslexikon kaufen. Diesen Markt wollte er erobern. Drei Jahre nach dem Kauf des "Conversationslexikons" verlegte Brockhaus sein Geschäft nach Altenburg, wo er die Konversationslexika druckte und vertrieb. Aus den zunächst sechs Bänden wurden schnell zehn. Bereits von der 5. Auflage (1818/20) verkaufte Brockhaus 32.000 Exemplare. Der Erfolg des neuen Informationsmediums rief Konkurrenten auf den Plan: 1822 brachten Johann Friedrich Pierer und sein Sohn Heinrich August das "Encyclopädische Wörterbuch der Wissenschaften und Künste" heraus, das im 19. Jahrhundert sieben Auflagen schaffte und dann vom Markt verschwand. Zu einem schärferen Konkurrenten wurden Joseph Meyer und Hermann Julius Meyer, deren "Großes Conversationslexikon für die gebildeten Stände" mit 46 Bänden und 6 Ergänzungsbänden (1839-1852) das umfangreichste Werk bildet, von dem 200.000 Exemplare verkauft wurden. Bartholomä Herder schließlich war der dritte und kleinste Mitbewerber auf dem lukrativen Lexikonmarkt. Die Konversationslexika sind aber auch die Folge eines konzeptionellen Scheiterns und einer Revolution des Wissens. Im sprichwörtlich enzyklopädischen 18. Jahrhundert wollte man das gesamte Wissen zusammenfassen. Aus diesem Geist umfassender Aufklärung entstanden die großen Enzyklopädien oder Universallexika. Johann Heinrich Zedler benötigte 22 Jahre (1732-1754) für die 68 Bände des "Großen vollständigen Universallexikons aller Wissenschaften und Künste": Denis Diderot und Jean Le Rond d'Alembert brachten die 35 Bände der "Enyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonnédes sciences; des arts et des métiers" (1751-1780) in 29 Jahren heraus, wobei der wichtigste Mitarbeiter meistens ungenannt blieb: Chevalier Louis de Jaucourt (1704-1780), von dem man fast nichts weiß und von dem kein Bild existiert, schrieb in den Bänden 3 bis 17 nachweislich 28 Prozent der Artikel, in den letzten Bänden rund 40 Prozent.
Als sie Zedlers "Universallexikon" aktualisieren wollten, merkten die Lexikografen bald, dass sich das Wissen viel schneller vermehrte und veränderte; als sie arbeiten konnten. Erschien ein Band, war er naturwissenschaftlich, statistisch, technologisch und medizinisch bestenfalls auf dem Stand von vorgestern. Die "Deutsche Enzyklopädie" (1778-1804) wurde deshalb nach dem 23. Band beim Buchstaben K abgebrochen. Das Projekt, alles gültige Wissen aktuell zu bündeln, erwies sich als unausführbar. Ebenso erging es der "Allgemeinen Enzyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste" von Johann Samuel Ersch und Johann Gottfried Gruber, deren Unternehmen nach 71 Jahren 1889 mit insgesamt 167 Bänden beim Buchstaben P endete. Einen Ausweg aus dem Dilemma bildeten fortan Spezial-Enzyklopädien zu nur einem einzigen Wissensgebiet. Johann Georg Krünitz sammelte das Wissen für seine "Oeconomische Encyclopädie" von 1773 bis 1796, er verstarb beim Verfassen des Eintrags "Leiche". Das Werk wurde 1858 mit dem 242. Band abgeschlossen. Die naturwissenschaftlich-technische Revolution machte also auch den Anspruch illusorisch, nur das gesamte Wissen der "Haus-, Land- und Staatswirtschaft" zu ordnen. An die Stelle der Monumentalwerke traten Nachschlagewerke und Handbücher für relativ kleine Teilgebiete. Einen anderen Ausweg boten, die Konversationslexika, die weder den Anspruch erhoben, alles Wissen zu sammeln, noch gedachten, nur gesichertes Wissen zu präsentieren. Die Anfänge waren bescheiden, ja geradezu poetisch. 181g lautete der erste Satz im Artikel "Polen": "Ein Land, ein Volk und ein Staat, seit tausend Jahren fast nur durch Unglück denkwürdig`: Die Auswahl der Stichworte blieb hochgradig zufällig und die Behandlung des Stoffs eher kursorisch-assoziativ als wissenschaftlich orientiert. Vieles blieb mit Haut und Haaren dem jeweiligen Zeitgeist verpflichtet. Besonders deutlich wird das, wenn man die Artikel über "Frauen" liest. Sie stürzen den heutigen Leser in einen Taumel zwischen Erheiterung und Trostlosigkeit. Für Jahrzehnte sind die Frauen "Repräsentanten der Liebe wie die Männer des Rechts", dann ist der "Mann stark im Handeln, Mitteilen und Befruchten, das Weib im Dulden, Empfangen und Gebären" Erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts versuchten die Konversationslexika, wissenschaftlich gesichertes Wissen in allgemein verständlicher Sprache zu vermitteln. Aktualität, Objektivität, Selektivität und Präzision sind die Grundanforderungen an jedes Lexikon. Die vier Anforderungen bergen jedoch zugleich die Grundprobleme jedes Unternehmens, weil sie schwer miteinander vereinbar sind: Der Anspruch, aktuell zu sein, kann die Objektivität gefährden. Die Auswahl tangiert die Aktualität und die Objektivität. Auch Präzision ist mit Objektivitäts-: und Auswahlproblemen verknüpft.
Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg sind aus den Wissen popularisierenden Konversationslexika wissenschaftlich fundierte Nachschlagewerke geworden, die mehr Enzyklopädien des 18. Jahrhunderts gleichen als den ersten Konversationslexika. Der "Brockhaus" hat dem Kriterium der Aktualität immer große Bedeutung eingeräumt. Aber noch die Erarbeitung der 19. Auflage dauerte volle acht Jahre, von 1986 bis 1994. Für die 20. Auflage wurden erstmals Computer und Datenbanken eingesetzt, was die Bearbeitungszeit auf dreieinhalb Jahre verkürzte. Die im Herbst 20o5 erscheinende 21. Auflage wird 30 Bände umfassen und in der Rekordzeit von einem Jahr hergestellt. Wissen vermehrt und verändert sich immer schneller. Die Arbeit am Wissen der Gegenwart gleicht deshalb einer permanenten Baustelle. Die Erfassung des Wissenswandels verlangt Antworten auf heikle Gewichtungs- und Wer tungsfragen. Natürlich will ein heutiger Benützer wissen, was eine "CD-ROM" oder ein "Carver-Ski" ist. Andererseits kann ein Lexikon unmöglich, alle technischen Neuerungen registrieren. Das Lexikon muss aus der Masse des täglich neuentstehenden Wissens das Wichtige auswählen, benutzerfreundlich ordnen und das veraltete Wissen so eliminieren, dass keine kulturellen Brüche entstehen. Auch die Spuren der Erinnerung an wissenschaftliche Irrtümer und Sackgassen dürfen nicht völlig gelöscht werden. Noch vor fünf Jahren erklärte Dieter E. Zimmer, "gedruckte Enzyklopädien haben ausgedient" (Zeit vom 10.2.2000) und setzte auf elektronische Lexika, die sozusagen stündlich aktualisiert werden könnten. Wie auf anderen Gebieten hat sich auch bei den Lexika die Cyber-Euphorie überlebt. Die berühmte"Encyclopaedia Britannica" wollte 1999 den Druck des Werks einstellen, erschien aber nach einem kurzen Auftritt im Internet aktualisiert doch wieder gedruckt in 32 Bänden (2002/03). Brockhaus wird die papierene Version des Lexikons nicht ersetzen, sondern durch medienspezifische neue Features auf DVD und Onlineportale ergänzen. Aber auch hier ist man vorsichtig geworden, denn alle Onlinedienste haben die "hohen betriebswirtschaftlichen Erwartungen (...) bis heute nicht erfüllt" (schreibt Thomas Keiderling in der Firmengeschichte). Momentan erscheint der Trend für Nachschlagewerke im Internet eher rückläufig, weil die Finanzierung des Angebots durch Werbung nicht funktioniert. Die Befürch-tung, den gedruckten Konversationslexika könnten es im neuen Jahrhundert untergehen, so wie sie Universalenzyklopädien Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts verdrängten, ist nicht akut."

- Mit weiteren historischen Angaben: Sonderbarer Nutzen Der Schulschriftsteller und Lehrer Johann Hübner veröffentlichte 1704 in Leipzig das erste große deutschsprachige Lexikon unter dem Titel "Reales Staats-, Zeitungsund Conversationslexikon, darinnen sowohl die Religionen und staatliche Orden, die Reiche und Staaten, Meere, Seen, Insuln, Flüsse, Städte, Festungen, Schlösser, Häven, Berge, nebst alltäglichen Terminis Juridicis und Technicis, Gelehrten und Ungelehrten zu sonderbaren Nutzen klar und deutlich beschrieben werden". An Frauen richtete sich das Frauenzimmer-Lexicon aus dem Jahr 1715, von Gottlieb Sigmund Corvinus unter dem Pseudonym Amaranthes veröffentlicht. Die Oeconomische Encyklopädie des Arztes und Schriftstellers Johann Georg Krünitz, von 1773 bis 1858 in 242 Bänden erschienen, gilt als das umfangreichste deutsche Lexikon. Die völlig neu bearbeitete B. Auflage von Meyers Lexikon entstand von 1935 bis 1942 unter der unmittelbaren Kontrolle der "Parteiamtlichen Prüfungskommission" (PKK) der NSDAP. Da der braune Meyer dementsprechend tendenziös ausfiel, befand die NSDAP, dass für das Ausland eine gemäßigtere Version gemacht werden sollte. Weder das braune noch das neutralere Projekt wurden beendet. Nach dem Krieg wurden die vorhandenen Bände von der Alliierten Kontrollkommission konfisziert. Eine so genannte Antienzyklopädie erstellte Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) mit dem "Dictionaire Historique et Critique" (DHC). Im Gegensatz zu normalen Lexika stellte der DHC Meinungen direkt neben Gegenmeinungen, stellte Wissen nicht als gesicherte Fakten dar, sondern zog Fakten sogar in Zweifel. Dadurch ermutigte er seine Leser zu selbstständigem Denken und machte Fakten überprüfbar. Der DHC ist eine quellenkritische Bestandsaufnahme des theologischen, philsophischen und historischen Wissens seiner Zeit.

- Die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen und die Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek Hannover haben im Oktober 2005 das Projekt »Opal-Niedersachsen« vorgestellt. Das Internetportal für digitale und digitalisierte Kulturgüter Niedersachsens wird von der Stiftung Niedersachsen finanziell gefördert.

- "Ziel von Opal-Niedersachsen ist es, dem Nutzer in multimedialer und interaktiver Form digital erfasste Kulturgüter des Landes Niedersachsen online zur Verfügung zu stellen und auf diesem Weg die Geschichte und das kulturelle Erbe des Landes mehr ins Blickfeld der Bürger zu rücken. Abrufbar über eine zentrale Internetadresse, erhält der Nutzer umfassende Informationen über digital vorhandenes Material der Bibliotheken, Museen und Archive im Lande, in der Regel kostenfreie Nutzungsmöglichkeiten für Forschung, Lehre und Unterricht und die Vermittlung von Verwertungsrechten für kommerzielle Zwecke wie beispielsweise Verlage. Durch die technische Infrastruktur des Portals kann die digitale Erfassung weiterer Bestände unterstützt und ihre nachhaltige Betreuung gesichert werden. Zusätzlich sollen ausgewählte Materialien redaktionell aufbereitet und in Themenzusammenhänge gebracht werden. Die beteiligten Einrichtungen im Projekt Opal-Niedersachsen, dessen Leitung bei der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen liegt, spiegeln das umfangreiche Spektrum des kulturellen Erbes und der Geschichte Niedersachsens wider. Dieses soll im Portal durch hochwertig digitalisierte Objekte aus Kunst und Kultur zugänglich werden, ergänzt um redaktionell aufbereitete In formationstexte und lebendig aufbereitet durch die Verknüpfung der musealen Objekte mit Informationen über Museen, Bibliotheken und aktuelle Ausstellungen. Die Verbindung des kulturellen Erbes mit den technischen Möglichkeiten eines Internetportals ist die spannende Herausforderung für das Projekt."

- Abstract
- Verglichen mit ihrer mehr als zweieinhalbtausendjährigen Geschichte handelt es sich bei der Wissenschaftstheorie um eine sehr junge Disziplin der Philosophie. Von einer Etablierug als eigenständiger Disziplin kann erst seit den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts gesprochen werden. Verständlich wird die Entwicklung dieser neuen Disziplin aber nur, wenn man sieht, daß sie auf eine grundlegende Krise der Philosophie antwortet, nämlich auf das Scheitern des Projekts abendländischer Metaphysik, und gleichzeitig den Versuch darstellt, einen undogmatischen Begriff von Wissenschaft bereitzustellen durch eine Reflexion der Bedingungen, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen gesicherten Wissens

- Nach mehr als 4 Jahren Erfahrung in der kooperativen Erschließung von Internetquellen öffnet sich der Verbund Academic LinkShare für neue Partner aus den Geistes-, Regional- und Sozialwissenschaften. Academic LinkShare ist ein Netzwerk wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken. Gemeinsam bauen sie einen interdisziplinären Datenpool fachlich relevanter Internetquellen auf, aus dem sich alle Partner gleichberechtigt bedienen können. Nach mehr als vier Jahren gemeinsamer Entwicklungs- und Erschließungsarbeit lässt sich der Erfolg des Modells heute quantifizieren. Seit der Aufnahme des ersten Datensatzes Mitte 2001 sind weit mehr als 20.000 Quellen aus dem politik-, rechts-, wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Umfeld dazugekommen. Sie werden präsentiert in den Fachinformationsführern (qualifizierten Linksammlungen) von ViFaPol (Politikwissenschaft - http://www.vifapol.de), EconBiz (Wirtschaftswissenschaften - http://www.econbiz.de) und ViFa Recht (Rechtswissenschaft - http://www.vifa-recht.de). Jüngstes Mitglied des Verbundes sind die Europäischen Dokumentationszentren mit ihrem Rechercheportal ArchiDok (http://archidok.uni-mannheim.de). Die Einsparpotentiale liegen vor allem im hohen Überschneidungsgrad der Quellen, der - ohne Volltexte - bei ca. 30% liegt. Die Schaffung einer gemeinsamen technischen Infrastruktur allein begründet noch nicht den Erfolg des Modells. Viel schwieriger als die Entwicklung eines Erfassungssystems ist der Aufbau eines funktionierenden Netzwerks wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen und Bibliotheken, das sich nachhaltig für den Aufbau des Datenpools verantwortlich zeichnet. Vor dem Hintergrund überaus knapper Zeitressourcen hat Academic LinkShare technische und organisatorische Lösungen entwickelt, die den Voraussetzungen der Kooperationspartner gerecht werden. Dieses Win-Win-Prinzip zahlt sich aus. Neben den fünf Verbundpartnern von Academic LinkShare beteiligen sich heute mehr als 40 wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen an der Erschließung der Quellen. Das Interesse an dem Modell des Metadata Sharing ist beachtlich - der Kreis der Mitwirkenden wächst kontinuierlich an. Academic LinkShare bietet Interessenten aus dem sozial-, geistes- und regionalwissenschaftlichen Umfeld die Möglichkeit, dem Verbund beizutreten, und unterstützt sie dabei auf der Basis der vorhandenen technischen Lösungen beim Aufbau und Betrieb einer eigenen Virtuellen Fachbibliothek. - David Hilbert schrieb: "Fruchtbaren Begriffsbildungen und Schlußweisen wollen wir, wo immer nur die geringste Aussicht sich bietet, sorgfältig nachspüren und sie pflegen, stützen und gebrauchsfähig machen." Um Mathematikerinnen und Mathematikern die Spurensuche zu ermöglichen, sind Bibliotheken gefragt und gefordert, ihnen diese Spuren zu sichern und "gebrauchsfähig" zu machen. Bei dieser Spurensicherung übt der Gedanke, alles mathematische Wissen in einer digitalen Bibliothek zusammen zuführen, mit Verknüpfungen zu versehen und auf diese Weise in einer allanfassenden Sammlung zu verschmelzen, eine unglaubliche Faszination aus. Mit der rasanten Technologieentwicklung im Medienbereich scheint die Idee einer Bibliotheca Alexandrina für die Mathematik prinzipiell realisierbar zu sein und hat daher neuen Auftrieb erhalten.

- Abstract
- Die Geschichte wissenschaftlicher Information und Kommunikation war 1998 Thema einer von der American Society for Information Science und der Chemical Heritage Foundation in Pittsburgh, USA, durchgeführten Konferenz. Die Veranstalter planen im Jahre 2002 eine Nachfolgekonferenz unter dem Titel ,The Second Conference on the History and Heritage of Scientific and Technical Information Systems". Neben der Geschichte eigentlicher konventioneller und maschineller Informationssysteme soll auch die Rolle von Einzelpersonen ("Pioneers") und Institutionen bei der Entwicklung solcher Systeme in nationalem und internationalem Rahmen gewürdigt werden. Nach einführenden Gedanken zum Stellenwert der Geschichte wissenschaftlicher Information und Kommunikation stellt dieser Beitrag den Stand der Vorbereitungen zur Konferenz dar und gibt neben Ansatzpunkten für mögliche Forschungsbeiträge zur Geschichte des deutschen Informationswesens im 20. Jahrhundert auch einen Überblick über Ergebnisse eigener Forschungen zu den Beziehungen des Chemikers Wilhelm Ostwald zur Dokumentationsbewegung im ersten Drittel des Jahrhunderts

- Abstract
- Mit finanzieller Unterstützung der DFG wurden in dem Projekt "Digitalisierung der seltenen Bücher, Karten und Manuskripte zur Erforschung Sibiriens aus der Sammlung Asch" wissenschaftshistorisch bedeutsame Literatur- und Kartenmaterialien elektronisch zugänglich gemacht, die sich mit der Entdeckung und Erschließung des nordasiatischen Raumes im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert befassen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem multimedialen amerikanischrussischen Partnerprojekt "Meeting of Frontiers" (http://frontiers.loc.gov/), welches von der Library of Congress in Washington geleitet wird (Abb. 1), werden die wirtschaftspolitischen Ausdehnungen der europäischen Staaten sowie der Kolonisationsprozess in Amerika und Nordasien mit literatur- und medienhistorischen Originaldokumenten Online recherchierbar bereitgestellt. So können nicht nur die forschungsrelevanten Göttinger Materialien, sondern auch inhaltlich ergänzende, sehr seltene Bücher, Photographien, Karten und anderes Quellenmaterial von international bedeutenden Bibliotheken gemeinsam erschlossen und dem Benutzer digital frei zugänglich angeboten werden. Mit diesem Digitalisierungsprojekt soll vor allem die Forschungsarbeit einschlägiger wissenschaftshistorisch und ethnologisch ausgerichteter Institute unterstützt und die Versorgung mit forschungsrelevanter Quellenliteratur nachhaltig verbessert werden. Vor dem Hintergrund der internationalen Zusammenarbeit wurde das Quellenmaterial durch Erläuterungen zum historischen und wissenschaftlichen Stellenwert mit Hilfe von Annotationen, Sekundärmaterial und begleitenden Texten zu Sammlung und Werken aufbereitet. Im "Meeting of Frontiers" Projekt werden zwei wesentliche Ziele verfolgt. Zum Einen soll das Originalmaterial von verschiedenen Bibliotheken unter dem bereits erläuterten thematischen Rahmen auf digitaler Ebene zu einer Sammlung zusammengeführt werden. Neben der Library of Congress sind vor allem die Staatsbibliothek in Moskau, die Nationalbibliothek in St. Petersburg und die University of Alaska in Fairbanks an diesem Projekt beteiligt. Zum Anderen wird damit Lehrmaterial in elektronischer Form für jedermann über das Internet frei zugänglich bereitgestellt. Das Projekt "Meeting of Frontiers" ist Bestandteil des "American Memory" Programms (http://memory.loc.gov/) zum Aufbau einer nationalen digitalen Bibliothek in Amerika durch die Library of Congress. Innerhalb dieses Programms werden digitale Sammlungen zu unterschiedlichen Themen wie Geschichte, Politik, Wirtschaft, Geographie usw. online abrufbar angeboten. Unter den derzeitigen 7 Millionen Digitalisaten von "American Memory" befinden sich neben gedruckten und handschriftlichen Werken auch Karten, Photographien, Filme und Tonaufzeichnungen. Digitale Materialien aus den verschiedensten Quellen werden von der Library of Congress als "Online Galerien" (http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/) zu Internetausstellungen zusammengestellt.
Als internationales Projekt ist die "Meeting of Frontiers" Web-Seite zweisprachig, in englisch mit lateinischen Buchstaben und in russisch mit kyrillischen Buchstaben ausgelegt (Abb. 1). Die erläuternden Begleittexte können im Internet-Browser auch in Russisch gelesen werden und die Web-Seite lässt sich mit einer russischen Computer-Tastatur nutzen. Alle Digitalisate sind individuell bibliographisch aufgenommen und über Metadatensätze im amerika-üblichen MARC-Format recherchierbar. Gedruckte und handschriftliche Werke werden im Rahmen des Digitalisierungsprozesses an der Library of Congress mit 300 dots per inch (dpi) eingescannt. Reine Textseiten werden bitonal, schwarz-weiß Abbildungen als 8 bit Grayscale-Images und farbige Seiten als 24 bit Color-Images im TIFF Format digitalisiert und archiviert. Ein von der Firma "LizardTech" entwickeltes Software-Programm (http://www.lizardtech.com/) erlaubt die Komprimierung der Image-Dateien in ein spezielles Dateiformat MrSID (Multi-Resolution Seamless Image Database), was die schnelle Datenübertragung über das Internet und die anschließende Dekomprimierung in ein hochauflösendes TIFF auf dem PC des Nutzers ermöglicht. Neben dem Aufrufen von verschiedenen Textseiten eines Werkes besteht die Möglichkeit zum Navigieren und schnellen Hineinzoomen in Details auf Kartenwerken und Bildern über den InternetBrowser. Im Gegensatz zu dem frei verfügbaren Material der Library of Congress, können die von anderen Bibliotheken bereitgestellten Digitalisate aus urheberrechtlichen Gründen nicht uneingeschränkt heruntergeladen werden.

- Das Maß aller Dinge ist der Mensch. "Das 20. Jahrhundert stand im Zeichen der Technologie. Das 21. Jahrhundert wird im Zeichen der Menschen stehen, die mit Technologie umgehen müssen". Das gilt auch für das Web-Design. Wer als Anbieter auf den elektronischen Märkten bestehen will, sollte seinen Internetauftritt auf die Bedürfnisse des Kunden ausrichten, und das nicht nur hinsichtlich der dort feilgebotenen Naturalien, sondern auch in puncto Web-Site-Ergonomie, damit der Besucher konsumiert anstatt vorbeizuflanieren. Die Autoren vermeiden es, der Designergemeinde einen weiteren Styleguide unter die Nase zu reiben, sondern stellen Aspekte der Neurophysiologie, Wahrnehmungspsychologie und Gedächtnisforschung sowie Motivationstrategien - leicht verständlich aufbereitet - in den Vordergrund ihres Entwurfs der optimalen digitlaen Nische, damit der Homo sapiens nicht zu dem mutiert, was die Autoren eingangs des Buches so unbedarft konstatieren: einem 'Homo surfiens'

Es ist für alle, die sich mit der Organisation und Klassifikation unseres Wissens beschäftigen, eine Pflichtlektüre. In den ersten drei Kapiteln geht es um die Grundlegung der Grammatologie, die gewählte Terminologie (Linguistik und Semiotik) sowie die eigene Positionierung innerhalb des weiten Feldes der Grammatologie (S. 1-74). Es folgt der beschreibende Hauptteil der Geschichte des Schreibens und Sortierens seit sumerischer Zeit mit einem deutlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Frühzeit bis zur Spätantike (S. 75-327) und auf dem 17. und 18. Jahrhundert (5. 387-590). Es ist hier nicht möglich, die Ergebnisse im Einzelnen zu würdigen, zumal die Spannweite des ausgebreiteten Wissens eine detaillierte kritische Bearbeitung nicht erlaubt. Vielmehr soll versucht werden, einige wesentliche Punkte herauszugreifen und durch sie auf die weitere Lektüre neugierig zu machen. ..."

- Abstract
- Das Kompetenzzentrum Interoperable Metadaten (KIM) ist eine Informations- und Kommunikationsplattform für Metadatenanwender und -entwickler zur Verbesserung der Interoperabilität von Metadaten im deutschsprachigen Raum. KIM unterstützt und fördert die Erarbeitung von Metadatenstandards, die interoperable Gestaltung von Formaten und damit die optimale Nutzung von Metadaten in digitalen Informationsumgebungen mittels Lehrmaterialien, Schulungen und Beratungen. Das Kompetenzzentrum entsteht im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Projekts KIM unter der Federführung der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB). Projektpartner sind in der Schweiz die Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW Chur, die Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich und in Österreich die Universität Wien. Aufgabe des Kompetenzzentrums ist es, die Interoperabilität von Metadaten zu verbessern. Interoperabilität ist die Fähigkeit zur Zusammenarbeit von heterogenen Systemen. Datenbestände unabhängiger Systeme können ausgetauscht oder zusammengeführt werden, um z. B. eine systemübergreifende Suche oder das Browsen zu ermöglichen. Daten werden zum Teil in sehr unterschiedlichen Datenbanksystemen gespeichert. Interoperabilität entsteht dann, wenn die Systeme umfangreiche Schnittstellen implementieren, die ein weitgehend verlustfreies Mapping der internen Datenrepräsentation ermöglichen.

- Abstract
- Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden Aspekte und Charakteristika der Techniksprache untersucht, indem die Analyse auf Metaphern fokussiert wird. Die Metaphorik ist ein obligatorischer Bestandteil der Techniksprache. Im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert nimmt die Fachsprache und insbesondere die Techniksprache eine Sonderstellung ein. Die Forscher sprechen über eine Veralltäglichung der Technik, aber auch von Technologisierung des Alltags. Techniksprache ist schon längst Teil unserer Alltagskommunikation geworden, wobei in diesem Prozess die Massenmedien eine wichtige Rolle in der Verbreitung dieser Sprache spielen.

- Abstract
- Eines der großen offenen Probleme in der heutigen weltweiten Informationsgesellschaft ist die Absicherung des langfristigen Zugriffs auf digitale Objekte. Das Projekt Kopal geht dieses Problem an: Das vom BMBF geförderte kooperative Projekt entwickelt und betreibt eine innovative technische Lösung in Form eines nachnutzbaren Langzeitarchivs für digitale Daten. Das kopal-Archivierungssystem wird nach internationalen Standards im Bereich der Langzeitarchivierung und Metadaten im Rahmen des OAIS-Frameworks (Open Archival Information System) implementiert. Die Projektpartner (Die Deutsche Bibliothek Frankfurt am Main, die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, IBM Deutschland GmbH und die Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen) werden eine kooperativ nachnutzbare Lösung sowohl für Institutionen des kulturellen Erbes als auch für Wirtschaft und Industrie aufbauen.
