    Abstract
    Vom 9. bis 10. Juni luden die Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG) und FIZ Karlsruhe Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zu den ersten eSciDoc Days nach Berlin ein. Im Vordergrund der Veranstaltung stand die Gründung einer offenen Community zur Nachnutzung und Weiterentwicklung von eSciDoc, einer innovativen Arbeitsumgebung für die digital gestützte Forschung (e-Research). Knapp 100 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer aus 40 wissenschaftlichen Organisationen in Europa, USA und Japan folgten der Einladung.

    Abstract
    Zunächst wird die aktuelle Bedeutung digitaler Auskunft in der Informationsgesellschaft angesprochen. Anschließend folgt ein Überblick über den bislang erreichten Entwicklungsstand dieser relativ neuen Dienstleistung. Dabei werden die Vor- und Nachteile der technischen und organisatorischen Varianten erläutert. Schließlich richtet sich der Blick auf Qualitätskriterien zur Bewertung und Verbesserung digitaler Auskunft in der Praxis.

    "Die Ursprünge digitaler Auskunft reichen zurück in die 1980er Jahre. Aus bescheidenen Anfängen hat sich inzwischen eine bibliothekarische Standarddienstleistung entwickelt. Mit dem digitalen Umbruch stellten die Bibliotheken zunächst ihre Kataloge im Web für die Recherche bereit und boten FAQs zur Beantwortung von Standardfragen an. Um den vollen Umfang bibliothekarischer Dienstleistungen im Internet präsentieren zu können, bedurfte es darüber hinaus der Entwicklung eines Äquivalents für die klassische Auskunft im WWW. Die Entwicklung von digitaler Auskunft drängte sich aber nicht nur aus diesem Grund auf; das Web veränderte (und verändert) zudem die Informationskultur der Kunden; diese erwarten schnelleren und einfacheren Service. Alles soll so unmittelbar und so unkompliziert recherchierbar sein, wie man es von Google, Yahoo und anderen gewohnt ist. Außerdem hat die bibliothekarische Auskunft mit "Yahoo Clever" oder "Lycos IQ" kommerzielle Konkurrenten erhalten. Digitale Auskunft musste also als Antwort auf die Herausforderungen der kommerziellen Konkurrenz und der veränderten Benutzergewohnheiten schnell entwickelt werden. Denn nur so konnte und kann rechtzeitig unter Beweis gestellt werden, dass Bibliotheken für viele Auskunftsfälle gegenüber Suchmaschinen und Webkatalogen einen ungeheueren Vorteil besitzen: Die klassische und damit auch die digitale Auskunft zielt nicht darauf, die Fragen zu beantworten, die Benutzer stellen, sondern (idealerweise) darauf, ihnen die Informationen zu verschaffen, die sie tatsächlich benötigen.
    Schon in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts war in der Praxis des Auskunftsdienstes in den USA bekannt geworden, dass Benutzer häufig nicht nach dem fragen was sie eigentlich suchen, sondern meist allgemeine und nicht selten irreführende Fragen stellen. Dafür ist die Technik des Auskunftsinterviews entwickelt worden, um gemeinsam mit dem Kunden zu ermitteln, welche Informationen exakt gesucht werden. Während Suchmaschinen nur die syntaktische und (in Ausnahmefällen) die semantische Ebene der gestellten Frage abarbeiten können, vermag bibliothekarische Auskunft einer dritten, nämlich jener pragmatischen Dimension gerecht zu werden. Anders ausgedrückt: Suchmaschinen und andere Navigationsinstrumente des Internet arbeiten objektorientiert, digitale Auskunft durch bibliothekarische Experten hingegen erbringt subjekt- bzw. kundenorientierte Dienstleistungen. Bibliotheken mit elaborierter digitaler Auskunft sind den Herausforderungen der Informationsgesellschaft damit gewachsen: ja sie sind noch unverzichtbarer als zuvor. Speziell in Deutschland allerdings ist es nicht damit getan, digitale Auskunft mit Engagement zu entwickeln. Darüber hinaus müssen große Anstrengungen unternommen werden, um die Leistungsfähigkeit dieser bibliothekarischen Dienstleistung in das Bewusstsein der realen und potentiellen Kunden zu rücken."

    Abstract
    In dem Beitrag werden zweijährige Erfahrungen mit Lehrveranstaltungen zur Informationskompetenz beschrieben, die die Universitätsbibliothek der Technischen Universität München für naturwissenschaftlich-technische Studiengänge durchführt. Durch reichhaltige Lehraktivitäten wurden Bekanntheitsgrad und Stellenwert der Bibliothek erhöht und das Profil geschärft. Die Auswirkungen, die inhärente Parameter wie Veranstaltungstyp, Lehrinhalte, Lernverhalten und -zielkontrollen sowie unerwartete Faktoren wie Kooperationen und Koordinierung auf den Ablauf und den Erfolg solcher Veranstaltungen haben, werden diskutiert.

    Abstract
    Vom 17.-23.10.1992 fand eine 'Internationale Konferenz für ein neues Europa' zum Thema 'Informationspolitik als Kulturpolitik - Kulturell und gesellschaftspolitische Aspekte' in Königswinter statt. Die Teilnehmer kamen aus 23 Ländern Ost-, Mittel- und Westeuropa sowie aus den USA und aus Japan. Ziel der Konferenz war es, die Interdependenz zwischen Information und Kultur darzustellen. Es sollten (1) die ökonomischen, sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Dimensionen dieser Beziehung herausgearbeitet, (2) die politischen Implikationen auf der lokalen/kommunalen, der regionalen, der nationalen und der europäischen Ebene kritisch diskutiert, (3) die sich aus der dramatischen Umbruchsituation in Europa ergebenden politischen Konsequenzen und Handlungsnotwendigkeiten beleuchtet und in praktische Anregungen umgesetzt werden.     Abstract
    Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft fördert in 23 Universitätsbibliotheken (Sondersammelgebieten), 47 Spezialbibliotheken und 3 zentralen Fachbibliotheken ein System der überregionalen Literatur- und Informationsversorgung. Dieses System kooperativer umfassender Sammlung weltweit vorhandener wissenschaftlicher Literatur sollte erstmals aus der Nutzerperspektive evaluiert werden. Es sollten Form und Umfang der tatsächlichen wie der potentiellen Nutzung sowie jetzige und zukünftige Bedarfe ermittelt werden, und zwar beispielhaft in den Fächern Anglistik, Betriebswirtschaft, Biologie, Geschichte und Maschinenbau. Das Projekt wurde 2002/2003 von der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Münster zusammen mit infas-Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH durchgeführt. Diese Veröffentlichung zeigt den ersten Teil der Ergebnisse, die das Informationsverhalten von Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen in den fünf Fächern betreffen.

    Abstract
    Kalliope ist der deutsche Verbund zur Katalogisierung von Nachlässen und Autographen. Grundlage der seit Ende des Jahres 2001 im Internet frei zugänglichen Datenbank ist die Zentralkartei der Autographen (ZKA). Die ZKA hält in Form eines Zettelkataloges über 1,2 Millionen Handschriften und Nachlässe, ihre Standorte und beschreibende Informationen für den Benutzer bereit. Der Aufbau dieses Zettelkataloges begann 1966 und wurde mit der Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) und der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (SBB) bis Mitte der 90er Jahre in Zettelform betrieben. Die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ist auch der Standort der Zettelkataloge und der Datenbank. Das Besondere an der ZKA ist, dass die Nachweise materialbezogen sind und somit von Anfang an einen Großteil der deutschen Bibliotheken, viele Archive und Museen sowie Autographenbeschreibungen berücksichtigen. Hinzu kommen Nachweise zu Nachlässen aus deutschen Auktionskatalogen vor 1950.

    Abstract
    Die Informationspraxis von Studierenden und Wissenschaftler(inne)n im Kontext wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken wandelt sich unter den Vorzeichen der digitalen Informationswelt tiefgreifend, weist jedoch nicht nur in Richtung auf den aktiven Web 2.0-Nutzer bzw. den "Internetnutzer von morgen", wie es bisweilen den Anschein hat. Die durch die komplexen Anforderungen neuer Studiengänge stark beanspruchten Studierenden wie auch die unter hohem Konkurrenz- und Erfolgsdruck forschenden Wissenschaftler(inne)n benötigen vielmehr die Bibliotheken mit ihren professionellen Services und in ihrer Rolle als "Navigatoren im Wissensozean" mehr denn je. Bei ihren Hauptnutzungsgruppen - Studierenden und Wissenschaftler(inne)n - genießen die wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken gerade wegen ihrer verlässlichen, auf Kontinuität angelegten Kernaufgaben der Beschaffung (auch Lizenzierung) der für Studium und Forschung wesentlichen Medien und Ressourcen, deren professioneller Erschließung und Bereitstellung, sodann wegen der Unterstützung des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens, wegen ihres Angebots bedarfsorientierter (Fach-) Informationsdienste und ihrer auf die konkreten Arbeits- und Lernbedürfnisse abgestimmten Informationsinfrastrukturen nach wie vor hohe Reputation. Dies belegen die Befunde nahezu aller wesentlichen neueren Nutzerstudien im deutschsprachigen Raum wie auch langjährige Erfahrungen im Zusammenhang mit Kursen zur Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz. Der Vortrag thematisiert die Bedeutung bibliothekarisch gestalteter Informationsarchitekturen für professionelle wissenschaftliche Informationsarbeit im Licht des empirisch nachweisbaren Nutzerbedarfs und Informationsverhaltens.

    Abstract
    Schüler benötigen häufig Literatur und Informationen, die über das hinausgehen, was die Schulbibliothek vor Ort - wenn es sie überhaupt gibt - bieten kann. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Oberstufe, in der für Facharbeiten und Projekte vielfältige fachspezifische Informationsressourcen erforderlich sind. Trotz verstärkter Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schulen und Bibliotheken2 finden Schüler vielfach nicht den Zugang zu bibliothekarischen Informationsmitteln. Sie nutzen stattdessen Google und erhalten qualitativ unbefriedigende Ergebnisse. Ein Weg, dieser Problematik zu begegnen, ist die Entwicklung eines auf die Interessen und Bedürfnisse von Oberstufenschülern zugeschnittenen Recherche-Portals, das alle benötigten Informationsressourcen unter einer Oberfläche bündelt.

    Abstract
    Kundenzufriedenheit ist die Basis für eine längerfristige Zusammenarbeit zwischen Informationsvermittlern und internen oder externen Informationsnachfragern. Sie ist daher eine wichtige oder die wichtigste Zielgrösse im Informationsmarketing. Dabei gilt es jedoch, ein Optimum zwischen den Zielen »minimale Kosten« und »maximale Zufriedenheit der Kunden« zu finden. In der Praxis kommt es immer wieder vor, dass zwischen den Erwartungen von Kunden und den gelieferten Ergebnissen von Rechercheuren Diskrepanzen bestehen. Sei es, dass für ein Recherchethema nur eine geringe Anzahl von Datenbanken existiert, sei es, dass die Informationen sich geografisch auf andere Gebiete erstrecken als erwünscht, sei es, dass die Form und Aufbereitung der Recherche als nicht ansprechend empfunden wird oder aus sonstigen anderen Gründen. Was für Rechercheure selbstverständlich und selbsterklärend ist, ist oft beim Kunden erklärungsbedürftig. Folglich sind Kunden enttäuscht von Ihrem Dienstleister. Es ist empfehlenswert, in folgenden Stufen vorzugehen, die im einzelnen anhand von Praxisbeispielen erläutert werden: 1. Ermitteln der Kriterien für Kundenzufriedenheit: 2. Messen der Kundenzufriedenheit; 3. Ermitteln der Möglichkeiten zur Steigerung der Zufriedenheit; 4. Ermitteln der entstehenden Kosten für eine Steigerung der Zufriedenheit; 5.     Abstract
    Unsere Welt ist digital geworden. Wörter wie Download, Megapixel oder Gigabyte haben ihren Einzug in den allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch gehalten, die Suchmaschine Google hat es gar zum Verb gebracht: »Gegoogelt«, also via Internet nach Informationen über eine Person recherchiert, wird sowohl von jugendlichen vor einem Rendezvous wie auch von Personalreferenten vor Einladung eines Jobkandidaten. Man telefoniert über das Internet ("Voice over IP"), man erledigt seine Bankgeschäfte und Einkäufe elektronisch, ja, in einer Reihe von Werbespots für den größten deutschen Internetanbieter behaupten dessen Kunden gar, sie lebten online. Wie dem auch sei: Die technologische Entwicklung mit ihren Möglichkeiten, insbesondere des World Wide Web, prägt das Leben in vielen Bereichen, so auch das Verständnis des Einzelnen für Dienstleistungsqualität, die sich im Internet durchaus doppelbödig zeigt. Einerseits ist man als Internetnutzer gewohnt, mehr selbst zu erledigen (OnlineBanking und die Verbindungsrecherche der Bahn über Internet sind nichts anderes als Verlagerung der Dienstleistung vom Anbieter auf den Kunden), zugleich gibt es aber auch die »Belohnung« in Form einer unmittelbaren Reaktion: Das Geld wurde überwiesen, die Bahnverbindung wurde gefunden. Auch bei Google wird man belohnt - irgendetwas findet man immer, wenn auch vielleicht nicht das Gesuchte; nicht von Ungefähr hat die Suchmaschine einen Button »Auf gut Glück«. Die einfache Bedienbarkeit dieser weltweit meistgenutzten Informationsschnittstelle weckt nach wiederholter Nutzung die implizite Erwartung, dass alle anderen Zugänge zu Informationen ebenso leicht handhabbar sein mögen. Sich durch systematische Kataloge wie Yahoo zu klicken ist für viele »out«. Man mag als Informationsspezialist angesichts eines solchen Nutzungsverhaltens einen Mangel an Medienkompe tenz konstatieren und über Gegenstrategien nachdenken. Zunächst einmal gilt aber: Die Menschen, die von der heutigen, vermeintlich so einfachen und dann doch irgendwie sehr komplizierten, digitalen Umwelt geprägt werden, sehen Bibliotheken mit anderen Augen. So wie die kundenorientierte Gestaltung moderner Buchhandlungen auch die Erwartungen an Bibliotheken steigert, ein entsprechendes Ambiente zu schaffen, so setzen moderne Internetangebote einen Standard bei Servicequalität und Bedienbarkeit, der auch die Maßstäbe beeinflusst, die an entsprechende Bibliotheksangebote gelegt werden - selbst wenn nicht alle Kunden mit so hohen Ansprüchen in die Bibliothek kommen. Aber so wie die wenigsten Menschen das Handbuch zur Software lesen, sondern diese lieber direkt ausprobieren, so gibt es auch die illegitime Erwartung des von der Informationsflut gestressten Bibliothekskunden, die Bibliothek möge sich ebenfalls gleichermaßen explorativ erschließen lassen. Die Erwartung von außen und die Konkurrenz, in der Bibliotheken heute stehen (Warum wurde »Search inside the Book« von Amazon entwickelt und nicht von Bibliotheken?), ist die eine Seite. Das andere sind die verführerischen Möglichkeiten und Chancen, die sich für Bibliotheken durch die »neuen« Medien ergeben. Online-Datenbanken zu diversen Themen, virtuelle Expertennetzwerke, Kommunikation mit Bibliothekskunden via E-Mail und Chat - das alles erweitert den Spielraum der Bibliothek und bietet die Chance, sich als Akteur in der Informationsgesellschaft zu positionieren, der die digitalen Möglichkeiten nutzt und bereitstellt.
