    "Über 1000 Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker aus aller Welt erklären öffentlich ihren Boykott des Elsevier-Verlages auf der Webseite http://thecostofknowledge.com, und unter dem gleichen Namen veröffentlichen 34 namhafte Mathematiker einen offenen Brief, in dem sie in klarer Sprache den Verlag kritisieren (siehe auch die deutsche Übersetzung des offenen Briefes ab Seite 16 dieses Heftes): "What all the signatories do agree on is that Elsevier is an exemplar of everything that is wrong with the current system of commercial publication of mathematics journals, and we will no longer acquiesce to Elsevier's harvesting of the value of our and our colleagues' work."     Dies ist der Versuch, die Hintergründe des Boykotts von Elsevier auf http://thecostofknowledge.com durch zahlreiche Mathematiker (und andere Wissenschaftler) darzustellen und einige zentrale Fragen zu diskutieren, mit denen sich die Boykottbewegung konfrontiert sieht. Obwohl die Bewegung alles andere als homogen ist, glauben wir, dass die von uns hier aufgeführten Aspekte von vielen Unterzeichnern des Boykotts geteilt werden.

    Abstract
    Der Siegeszug der elektronischen Medien, insbesondere des weltumspannenden Datennetzes Internet, hat den traditionellen Informationsfluß in der Wissenschaft durcheinandergebracht. Seit Wochen wird in Deutschland auf höchster wissenschaftlicher und politischer Ebene diskutiert, was zu tun ist, um die eigene Forschung in dieser Lage international konkurrenzfähig zu halten. Auf einem Workshop in Berlin suchten jetzt vier große wissenschaftliche Fachgesellschaften zum ersten Mal gemeinsam 'neue Wege der wissenschaftlichen Information und Kommunikation'.     Abstract
    Ausgehend von der Beschreibung des wissenschaftlichen Publikationsprozesses wird der Not-For-Profit-Bereich näher untersucht. Dabei wird insbesondere Wert auf die Einordnung der Open-Access-Philosophie gelegt und die unterschiedlichen Veröffentlichungsformen werden dargestellt. Beschrieben werden der "Golden Road to Open Access" und ebenso der "Green Road to Open Access". Den Abschluss des Beitrages bildet eine Diskussion der Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des" Green Road to Open Access" als einer alternativen Publikationsform.

    Abstract
    Open Access Archive für Fachdisziplinen unterscheiden sich von organisationseigenen Repositorien durch ihre geringere institutionelle Verankerung und konstitutive Translokalität. Aus ihrer Sicht fallen manche Schwierigkeiten der Open Access-Initiative besonders ins Gewicht. Am Beispiel eines kleinen disziplinären Repositoriums Sammelpunkt (für Philosophie) werden zwei Punkte hervorgehoben. Erstens finden sich Journalbeiträge (bisweilen in unterschiedlichen Versionen) immer häufiger in mehreren, offenen oder gebührenpflichtigen, Archiven. Und zweitens können spezialisierte Sammlungen der Anziehungskraft dominanter Portale im akademischen sozialen Netz nichts entgegensetzen. Die Gründe dieser Entwicklung sind zu analysieren. Eine konzeptuelle Unzulänglichkeit liegt darin, dass die publikumswirksame Rede vom offenen Zugang zur Forschungsliteratur bei näherem Hinsehen zu undifferenziert ist, um unbeabsichtigte Praktiken auszuschließen.

    Abstract
    SGML und XML sind fundamentale Konzepte der heutigen und künftigen Speicherung, Verarbeitung und Verbreitung langlebiger Informationen, gerade im Hinblick auf die weltweite Vernetzung durch das Internet. Ausgehend von den technischen und ökonomischen Herausforderungen unserer Informationsgesellschaft, stellen die Autoren die wichtigen Entwicklungen dar und berichten über aktuelle Projekte mit SGML- und XML-Anwendungen in der Praxis.
