    Abstract
    Die Headlines einschlägiger Presseorgane und der sich in jüngster Zeit häufenden Veranstaltungen und Kongresse zum Thema Multimedia machen die Bandbreite von Einschätzungen und Empfindungen deutlich, die sich mit dem Leitbild der Informationsgesellschaft verbinden. Vom Aufbruch in ein neues Zeitalter oder aber auch von der zerstörung der demokratischen Grundlagen unserer Gesellschaft ist die Rede, von gigantischen Arbeitsplatzverlusten, die in der Folge zu erheblichen sozialen Verwerfungen führen und von völlig neuen Berufsperspektiven für Hunderttausende.     Die Länder sind für den Rundfunk zuständig, der Bund für Telekommunikation. So sieht es das Grundgesetz vor. Doch was, wenn die Grenzen zwischen Massen- und Individualkommunikation nicht mehr trennscharf sind?     Abstract
    Multimedia, die Integration und interaktive Nutzung von Text, Bild, Bewegtbild und Ton, wird die Zukunft der Information, des Lernens und der Unterhaltung in hohem Maße bestimmen. Um zu verstehen, warum Multimedia eine wichtige Technologie ist, wie Multimedia funktioniert und was es einem selbst bringt, muß man kein EDV-Experte sein. Dieses Buch erleichtert den praktischen Einstieg in die Multimedia-Welt.     Abstract
    Multimedia wird unser Leben vermutlich ähnlich einschneidend verändern, wie der Buchdruck im 15. Jahrhundert unsere gesamte Kultur revolutioniert hat. Welche Veränderungen die neue Kommunikationstechnologie bringen wird, hängt nicht nur von der Hard- und Software der Multimediasysteme ab, sondern auch von der Hard- und Software des Menschen - von Gehirnprozessen und psychologischen 'Programmen' beim Denken, Wahrnehmen und Fühlen. Die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen multimedialer Information werden deutlich, wenn man sich etwa vor Augen führt, wie viel Information wir allein beim Sehen ausblenden, wie wir Information im Gedächtnis abspeichern, wie wir verschiedenen Sinne synchronisieren. Auch für Medien gilt: Weniger ist manchmal mehr. Wenn man das Buch in die Hand nimmt und die Demonstrationsprogramme auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM dazu anschaut, wird man verstehen, warum es immer noch gewinnbringend ist, ein Buch zu lesen, und warum es durch ein elektronisches Medium sinnvoll ergänzt werden kann

    Abstract
    In der boomenden Multimedia-Branche ist Qualität zunehmend ein wichtiger Differenzierungsfaktor. Das Buch verdeutlicht anhand der gebräuchlichsten Multimedia-Anwendungen, was unter dem Begriff Qualität zu verstehen ist, und wie sie von führenden Unternehmen der Branche bei verschiedenen Produktionen bereits erzielt wird.     Abstract
    Die Chancen der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechniken werden gefeiert. Doch darüber, welche gravierenden gesellschaftlichen Konsequenzen Multimedia haben wird, wuchern die Spekulationen. Um die möglichen Entwicklungspfade zu erforschen, hat der Deutschen Bundestag nun eine Enquete-Kommission eingerichtet. Medienkompetenz für den einzelnen Bürger zu schaffen, ist eine der ersten Forderungen.     Abstract
    Begriffe wie Qualitätssicherung und Evaluation der Lehre verändern gegenwärtig die Hochschullandschaft - Multimedia bekommt dabei einen besonderen Stellenwert zugeschrieben: sein Einsatz vor allem auch in der Hochschullehre erfährt unter didaktischen wie pragmatischen Gesichtspunkten zunehmende Bedeutung. In der Praxis fehlt es jedoch noch oft an der notwendigen technischen und dienstleistungsbezogenen Infrastruktur für Studierende ebenso wie für Dozentinnen und Dozenten. Bibliotheken, Rechen- und Medienzentren sind deshalb dringend aufgefordert, kooperativ eine entsprechende Funktions- und Servicebasis für den Multimedia-Einsatz zu entwerfen. Dieser Aufforderung hoben sich die Universitätsbibliothek und das Hochschulrechenzentrum Essen gestellt: MILESS, der Multimediale Lehr- und Lernserver Essen, bietet eine technologische, inhaltliche und dienstleistungsbezogene Multimedia-Infrastruktur für die Hochschule, die deren Bedürfnisse in Forschung und Lehre umfassend erfüllt. Als technischer Sockel fungiert dabei die IBM Digital Library, auf dem aufsetzend eine spezifische MILESS-Software entwickelt wurde.
