- Abstract
- Die Rolle der Symmetrie als Werkzeug der Orientierung des Menschen in Raum und Zeit ist in allen Epochen und Zivilisationen aufzuspüren. Sowohl das natur- und geisteswissenschaftliche Denken als auch die Künste und die Prinzipien menschlicher Handelns neigen dazu, sich in Strukturen symmetrischer Natur auszuformen. Zum Beispiel hat die zeitgenössische Physik, mit dem Rüstzeug der modernen Mathematik versehen, den Symmetriebegriff ins Zentrum des Interesses gerückt. - Abstract
- Unser Bild von der Welt hat sich innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte durch die Erkenntnisse der modernen Naturwissenschaft und die Fortschritte auf technologischem Gebiet schneller und radikaler verändert als je zuvor in der Geschichte. Unsere Wirklichkeitserfahrung ist eine andere geworden, die Basis unserer Welt-Sicht, das rationale, kausal-analytische Denken, ist in Frage gestellt, die als sakrosankt betrachtete kartesianische Trennung von Geist und Natur, Wissenschaft und Glauben überholt. In einem solchen Moment des geistigen Umbruchs sind Physiker und Biologen, Philosophen und Sozialwissenschaftler gleichermaßen gefordert, an der Grundlegung eines neuen Verständnisses von Mensch und Natur, Geist und Materie mitzuarbeiten. Denn eine Synthese unseres Wissens, die zu einer sinnstiftenden Einheit und Ganzheit unserer Erfahrungen führen soll, muß sich zunächst auf die Erkenntnisse der Einzelwissenschaften stützen, sollte auch andere Denktraditionen, wie etwa die der fernöstlichen Spiritualität und Weltweisheit, miteinbeziehen und die fundamentalen Einsichten der christlich-abendländischen Philosophie und Ethik nicht aus dem Auge verlieren.
Die auf dem Kongreß «Geist und Natur» in Hannover zusammengekommenen Wissenschaftler aller Disziplinen - darunter einige Nobelpreisträger - haben sich dieser Aufgabe gestellt und versucht, aus ihren unterschiedlichen Denkansätzen heraus neue, die Probleme unserer Zeit berücksichtigende Antworten auf die «letzten Fragen» zu finden wie: Was ist Geist? Was ist Natur, Materie? Was ist Bewußtsein? Was ist Zeit? Was ist Wirklichkeit? Aber nicht weniger intensiv wurden auch ganz konkrete Möglichkeiten zum Beispiel einer neuen ökologischen Ethik, einer Neuordnung der Weltwirtschaft und neuer Formen des Dialogs zwischen den Kulturen erwogen. Die Vorträge - oft von den bedeutendsten Vertretern ihres Fachgebiets gehalten - sind sowohl Bestandsaufnahme unserer gegenwärtigen geistigen und gesellschaftlichen Situation wie auch richtungweisend für die Zukunft. Dieser Band enthält die wichtigsten, interessantesten Beiträge zu dieser Diskussion, so daß sich dem Leser damit ein faszinierendes Kaleidoskop des heutigen Wissens und Denkens bietet.

- Abstract
- Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wird die Diskussion in der Philosophie durch den Begriff der Repräsentation bestimmt. Man vergleicht das Bewußtsein mit einem Spiegel, der die Realität reflektiert. Das Erkennen bemüht sich um die Genauigkeit dieser Reflexion, und die Arbeit des Erkennens besteht im Prüfen, Instandsetzen und Polieren des Spiegels der Natur. In einer eindringlichen und weit ausgreifenden Kritik dieser Metaphorik gibt Richard Rorty eine Übersicht ihres Einflusses auf die Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts: eine kritische Selbstreflexion der analytischen Philosophie, die zur Dekonstruktion der bezeichneten Metaphorik führt. In den drei Teilen dieses Buches diskutiert Rorty jeweils die Begriffe des Mentalen, der Erkenntnis und der Philosophie in einer von Dewey, Heidegger und Wittgenstein ausgehenden historischen Perspektive.

- In den Arbeiten dieses Sammelbandes wird die Erkenntnistheorie des 'radikalen Konstruktivismus' anschaulich und folgerichtig entwickelt. In Untersuchungen zu Sprache und Kommunikation, zur kybernetischen Modellierung kognitiver Prozesse, zur Entwicklung des begrifflichen - besonders auch des mathematischen - Denkens von Kindern wird im einzelnen dargestellt, daß wir die Idee 'objektiver' Erkenntnis verwerfen müssen, solange wir streng empirisch und rational erkennen wollen. Alle Erkenntnis, alles Wissen stellt keine 'Entdeckung' einer unabhängig von uns existierenden Realität dar, sondern wird von uns erzeugt, 'konstruiert', und bleibt solange gültig als es uns zu (über-)leben hilft, als es 'viabel' ist. Daraus ergibt sich nicht nur eine dramatisch veränderte Sicht menschlicher Erkenntnis, menschlichen Lernens, Handelns und Zusammenlebens, sondern auch eine anspruchsvolle Ethik der individuellen (Über-)Lebensverantwortung

- Abstract
- Unsere Kultur ist heute durch einen Zwiespalt gekennzeichnet: Einerseits wird die Wirklichkeit im Lichte wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis betrachtet, welche, wie Max Weber gesagt hat, die Welt "entzauberte". Andererseits haben wir nie aufgehört, mehr oder weniger uneingestanden die Begegnungen mit der Natur und den Menschen, Liebe, Geburt, Tod und andere wichtige Ereignisse auf eine nichtwissenschaftliche Weise zu erfahren, die ihre uns kaum bewußten Wurzeln im mythischen Denken der Vergangenheit hat. Dieser Zwiespalt ist der Gegenstand der seherischen Dichtung Friedrich Hölderlins, mit deren ausführlicher Deutung das Werk beginnt. Gestützt auf die moderne Mythos-Forschung werden in einem weiteren Hauptabschnitt die Grundformen mythischen Denkens und Lebens am Beispiel des griechischen Mythos und der griechischen Tragödiendichtung entwickelt. Wie irrational sind Mythen und Götter? Mit welchem Recht kann auch der Mythos wie die Wissenschaft Wahrheit für sich beanspruchen? Warum hat im Laufe der Geschichte die Wissenschaft den Mythos verdrängt? Eine eingehende Analyse des mythischen Weltverständnisses im Vergleich zur Wissenschaft führt zu überraschenden Antworten auf diese Fragen. Damit wird aber auch das verborgene Fortwirken des Mythos in der heutigen Welt aufgedeckt. Durch ausführliche Interpretationen moderner Malerei (Klee u.a.), Musik (Wagner), Theologie (Bultmann) und Politik (das Grundgesetz der Bundesrepublik) wird die Gegenwärtigkeit mythischer Vorstellungsweisen deutlich. Das Buch schließt mit der Frage, was sich daraus für die Zukunft einer Welt ergibt, die auf Wissenschaft nicht mehr verzichten kann, der aber auch, wie sich zunehmend zeigt, mythisches Welterfahren unentbehrlich ist. Historische Darstellung und philosophische Analyse zugleich, durchleuchtet dieses klar geschriebene und an innerer Spannung reiche Werk Mythos und Wissenschaft, deren Macht und Ohnmacht, und bringt damit zugleich die geistige Situation unserer Zeit auf den Begriff.

- "Rombach präsentiert zur Grundlage seiner Meditationen über das gegenwärtig zukünftige Denken eine in sich erstaunlich konsequente, aber keineswegs gewaltsame Interpretation der gesamten abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte. Freilich treibt er auch Philosophiegeschichte in einem unüblichen Stil. Ebensowenig wie es ihm um eine Bestandsaufnahme der in unserer Zeit publizierten Philosophie geht, zielt er auf die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen über die Philosophie früherer Zeiten ab. Statt dessen fragt er, wie Philosophie als solche und im ganzen nicht nur gegenwärtig ist, sondern je gegenwärtig war. Hinter dieser Frage steht die zentrale These, Philosophie bedeute nicht zu allen Zeiten dasselbe. Damit soll durchaus nicht die banale Tatsache festgestellt werden, daß die Philosophen verschiedener Zeiten zu verschiedenen Ergebnissen gekommen sind. Vielmehr ist Rombachs Meinung die, daß das Wesen der Philosophie epochal geprägt ist, daß sowohl ihr "Standort" wie ihre "Bewegungsform" sich von Epoche zu Epoche wandeln. Diese These ist alles andere als banal, sie ist schockierend und revolutionär." - Abstract
- Im Jahre 1970 zog mich Imre Lakatos, einer der besten Freunde, die ich je besessen habe, zur Seite und sagte mir: »Paul«, sagte er, »du hast doch so komische Ideen. Warum schreibst du sie nicht nieder, ich schreibe eine Antwort, wir publizieren die Sache und haben einen Heidenspaß.« Der Vorschlag gefiel mir und ich machte mich an die Arbeit. Das Manuskript meines Teils des geplanten Buches war im Jahre 1972 beendet und ich schickte es nach London. Dort verschwand es auf geheimnisvolle Weise. Imre Lakatos, der dramatische Gesten liebte, verständigte die Interpol, und in der Tat, die Interpol fand mein Manuskript und schickte es an mich zurück. Ich las es noch einmal und schrieb es zum großen Teil um. Im Februar des Jahres 1974, nur einige Wochen nachdem ich meine Revision beendet hatte, starb Imre Lakatos. Ich habe dann meinen Teil ohne seine Antwort publiziert. Diese Entstehungsgeschichte erklärt die Form des Buches. Das Buch ist kein systematischer Traktat, es ist ein Brief an einen Freund und geht dabei auf die Eigentümlichkeiten des Adressaten ein. Zum Beispiel: Imre Lakatos war ein Rationalist, also spielt der Rationalismus im Buch eine große Rolle. Imre Lakatos bewunderte auch Popper, darum kommt Popper viel öfter vor, als es seiner »objektiven Bedeutung« entspricht. Imre Lakatos nannte mich, in etwas scherzhafter Weise, einen Anarchisten, darum stelle ich mich selber als einen Anarchisten vor. Imre Lakatos war ein Freund der Ironie, und darum machte ich von der Ironie häufigen Gebrauch. Zum Beispiel ist das Ende von Kapitel i ganz ironisch gemeint; denn anything goes ist nicht mein Grundsatz - ich glaube nicht, daß man »Grundsätze« unabhängig von konkreten Forschungsproblemen aufstellen und diskutieren kann, und solche Grundsätze ändern sich von einem Fall zum anderen -, sondern der erschreckte Ausruf eines Rationalisten, der sich die von mir zusammengetragene Evidenz etwas genauer ansieht. Bei der Lektüre der vielen ernsthaften und gründlichen Kritiken, die mir nach Publikation der englischen Fassung ins Haus flatterten, dachte ich oft mit Wehmut an meine Diskussionen mit Lakatos: wie hätten wir beide doch gelacht, wäre es uns vergönnt gewesen, diese Kritiken zusammen zu studieren. Die neue Fassung unterscheidet sich von der des Jahres 1975 durch Kürzungen, stilistische Änderungen, Einschübe und drei völlig neue Kapitel. Die politischen Anwendungen sind jetzt zur Gänze in Erkenntnis für freie Menschen (Suhrkamp 1980) zu finden. Weiteres (und älteres Material) zu den Problemen findet der Leser in den beiden Bänden meiner Philosophical Papers, Cambridge 1981, sowie in den (etwas anders gestalteten) Ausgewählten Schriften, 2 Bde., Vieweg 1980, 1981. Anwendungen auf die Kunst sind zu finden in Wissenschaft als Kunst, 1983. Noch einmal betone ich, daß die im Buch vorgetragenen Auffassungen nicht neu sind - für Physiker wie Mach, Boltzmann, Einstein, Bohr waren sie eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Aber die Ideen dieser großen Denker wurden von den Nagetieren des Wiener Kreises und den sie wieder benagenden kritisch-rationalistischen Nagetieren bis zur Unkenntlichkeit entstellt. Imre Lakatos war einer der wenigen Denker, die diese Diskrepanz bemerkten und durch die Entwicklung einer sehr viel komplexeren Rationalitätstheorie beseitigen wollte. Ich glaube nicht, daß ihm das gelungen ist. Aber die Anstrengung war der Mühe wert und hat zu vielen interessanten Ergebnissen geführt. Ihm widme ich daher auch diese, leider schon etwas weniger ironische, Fassung meines vereinsamten Teils unserer gemeinsamen Arbeit.

- Abstract
- Gegen das ego- und ratiozentrische Selbstverständnis des Menschen, wie es in der europäischen Philosophie der Neuzeit vorherrschend war und in unserem Jahrhundert noch einmal von der Husserlschen Phänomenologie bekräftigt wurde, arbeitet Holenstein in diesen Studien - auf unterschiedlichen theoretischen Ebenen - an der "Dezentrierung" des Selbstbewusstseins. Weder kann das Ich im Wahrnehmungsraum als "Nullpunkt der Orientierung" gelten, da dieser Raum vielmehr polyzentrisch organisiert ist, noch rechtfertigt die "eigentümliche Grammatik des Wortes 'ich'" die Vorstellung, die im Ichbewusstsein den sicheren Ausgangspunkt von Erkenntnis sieht; mit dem Gebrauch des Wortes 'ich' bezeugt der Sprecher vielmehr seine eigene Relativität und siedelt sich in einem komplexen Rollenspiel zwischen 'Subjekt des Sprechaktes' und 'Subjekt der Aussage' an.
