Mit diesem Buch wagt er noch einmal einen Rundumschlag, eine Meistererzählung von den Ursprüngen des Lebens über die Geistesgrößen der Menschheit wie Johann Sebastian Bach, Marie Curie oder Pablo Picasso bis hin zur Künstlichen Intelligenz. - Der Mensch: Krone der Schöpfung oder Schrecken des Ökosystems? Wie haben wir, Homo Sapiens, es geschafft, den Kampf der sechs menschlichen Spezies ums Überleben für uns zu entscheiden? Warum ließen unsere Vorfahren, die einst Jäger und Sammler waren, sich nieder, betrieben Ackerbau und gründeten Städte und Königreiche? Warum begannen wir, an Götter zu glauben, an Nationen, an Menschenrechte? Warum setzen wir Vertrauen in Geld, Bücher und Gesetze und unterwerfen uns der Bürokratie, Zeitplänen und dem Konsum? Und hat uns all dies im Lauf der Jahrtausende glücklicher gemacht? Vor 100 000 Jahren war Homo sapiens noch ein unbedeutendes Tier, das unauffällig in einem abgelegenen Winkel des afrikanischen Kontinents lebte. Unsere Vorfahren teilten sich den Planeten mit mindestens fünf weiteren menschlichen Spezies, und die Rolle, die sie im Ökosystem spielten, war nicht größer als die von Gorillas, Libellen oder Quallen. Vor 70 000 Jahren dann vollzog sich ein mysteriöser und rascher Wandel mit dem Homo sapiens, und es war vor allem die Beschaffenheit seines Gehirns, die ihn zum Herren des Planeten und zum Schrecken des Ökosystems werden ließ. Bis heute hat sich diese Vorherrschaft stetig zugespitzt: Der Mensch hat die Fähigkeit zu schöpferischem und zu zerstörerischem Handeln wie kein anderes Lebewesen. Und die Menschheit steht jetzt an einem Punkt, an dem sie entscheiden muss, welchen Weg sie von hier aus gehen will.

- Was ist eigentlich die Seele und wie hängt sie mit dem Gehirn zusammen? Seit dem Altertum wird das Gehirn als Organ der Seele angesehen. Wo und wie aber das Psychische im Gehirn entsteht, wie sich dabei unsere Gefühlswelt, unsere Persönlichkeit und unser Ich formen, kann mit Hilfe der modernen Verfahren der Hirnforschung erst seit kurzem erforscht werden und wird in diesem Buch dargestellt.
Die vergleichsweise junge Neurobiologie verstehen der "Altmeister" Gerhard Roth und seine junge Kollegin Nicole Strüber als ergänzende Wissenschaft zu Psychologie und Psychotherapie. Sie bekennen sich uneingeschränkt zur naturwissenschaftlichen Sichtweise: "Alles, was wir erleben, hat seinen Ort im Gehirn". Ihr Anspruch, dass es außerhalb der naturalistischen Betrachtungsweise keine anderen Erklärungsmodelle geben kann, wird seit vielen Jahren kontrovers diskutiert. Gerhard Roth weist selber auf eine Erklärungslücke hin: Es ist völlig unklar, wie Bewusstsein entsteht, auch wenn die biologischen Vorgänge im Gehirn bekannt sind. Dennoch ist er sich sicher, dass "aus neurobiologischer Sicht die Suche nach dem Sitz der Seele erfolgreich beendet wurde.",Auf den ersten 200 Seiten werden detailliert die Anatomie und Physiologie des Nervensystems erklärt. Psychologische Begriffe werden auf ihre neurobiologische Grundlage hin untersucht. Aufmerksamkeit, Gedächtnis und Persönlichkeit haben ihre typischen Lokalisationen im Gehirn. Einige Grundannahmen der Psychotherapien werden bestätigt, etwa die große Bedeutung der vorgeburtlichen und frühkindlichen Erfahrungen, die Bindungserfahrungen und die genetischen Dispositionen. Manche Therapiekonstrukte werden widerlegt, wie Freuds Traumtheorie oder die kognitive Umstrukturierung. Möglicherweise kann die Neurobiologie in Zukunft noch viel mehr zur Diagnostik und Therapie beitragen, meint Roth. Für Laien gibt es kaum ein vergleichbar umfangreiches Sachbuch, das dermaßen gut verständlich, klar und nüchtern die moderne Hirnforschung beschreibt.

- Wer philosophiert, der argumentiert. Dabei hält sich das erstaunliche Vorurteil, daß beim philosophischen Argumentieren einfach nur die formale Logik auf die Themen der Philosophie anzuwenden sei. Aber mit Logikkenntnissen allein ist es nicht getan. Das spannende und aufregende Denkabenteuer philosophischen Argumentierens beginnt jenseits des bloß Formalen. Holm Tetens legt ein Buch vor, das in die Eigenheiten philosophischen Argumentierens ganz von den inhaltlichen Themen und Problemen der Philosophie her einführt. Dabei kommt die formale Logik durchaus zu ihrem Recht, indem zu Anfang ihre Prinzipien und die Technik ihrer Anwendung vorgestellt werden. Ansonsten ist das Buch aber so untechnisch geschrieben, daß man ihm auch ohne tiefere Logikkenntnisse gut folgen kann. Für jeden, der sich für die Philosophie interessiert, sei er Anfänger, Laie oder bereits gut mit ihr vertraut, hält dieses Buch eine Fülle an Informationen und provokanten Denkanregungen bereit.

- Dieses Buch geht davon aus, dass eine moderne Hermeneutik als Theorie des Verstehens im begrifflichen Rahmen der gegenwärtigen Theorie des Geistes und der Semantik rekonstruiert werden sollte. Vor diesem theoretischen Hintergrund, der in einem eigenen Kapitel näher umrissen wird, soll die Geschichte der Hermeneutik neu gelesen werden. Über die hermeneutischen Positionen hinaus, die in den bisherigen Gesamtdarstellungen auftauchen, werden auch Entwürfe diskutiert, die besonders unter geist-theoretischen Gesichtspunkten interessant sind, zum Beispiel die antike Hermeneutik, die Hermeneutik Max Webers, die Hermeneutik der logischen Empiristen und die naturalistische Hermeneutik. Vor allem aber wird belegt, dass die Geschichte der Hermeneutik teilweise zu großen Einsichten gelangt ist, an die eine moderne Hermeneutik anknüpfen kann. Das Buch wendet sich nicht nur an Spezialisten der Hermeneutik-Geschichte, sondern an alle Interessierten, denen das Schicksal der verstehenden Wissenschaften am Herzen liegt, und möchte ihnen eine Perspektive empfehlen, unter der sich der Status und die Autonomie der Geisteswissenschaften sowie ihr Bezug auf das Humane unter Heranziehung substantieller Theorien auf neue Weise würdigen lassen.

- Wie kann Aktivität im Gehirn Gefühle auslösen? Wie kann "bloßes Fleisch" - so wird der Körper in Cyberpunkromanen oft abfällig genannt -- subjektives Empfinden hervorbringen? Oder allgemeiner gesagt: Wie kann etwas Physisches etwas Nichtphysisches, subjektive Zustände erzeugen? Ob es der Zahnschmerz ist, die Freude beim Anblick der eigenen Kinder oder der Geschmack eines edlen Weins, sie alle haben denselben Ursprung in der Aktivität von Nervengewebe, im Bewusstsein. Christof Koch forscht seit Jahren über das Thema Bewusstsein. In einer Art Bestandsaufnahme zeigt er den derzeitigen Stand der Forschung auf, an dem auch maßgeblich Wissenschaftler wie Francis Crick, Ned Block, David Chalmers, Stanislas Dehaene, Giulio Tononi und Wolf Singer mitgewirkt haben. Ihm erscheint nicht als Widerspruch, mit naturwissenschaftlichen, empirischen Methoden erklären zu wollen, wie Gefühle entstehen. - Abstract
- Die Geschichte der Information beginnt in einer Zeit, die unserer nicht unähnlicher sein könnte. Von der Entwicklung der sprechenden Trommeln zu den ersten Alphabeten und natürlich der Schrift, ist die Information einen weiten Weg gegangen. Eine höchst interessante und informative Geschichte. Blut, Treibstoff, Lebensprinzip - in seinem furiosen Buch erzählt Bestsellerautor James Gleick, wie die Information zum Kernstück unserer heutigen Zivilisation wurde. Beginnend bei den Wörtern, den "sprechenden" Trommeln in Afrika, über das Morsealphabet und bis hin zur Internetrevolution beleuchtet er, wie die Übermittlung von Informationen die Gesellschaften prägten und veränderten. Gleick erläutert die Theorien, die sich mit dem Codieren und Decodieren, der Übermittlung von Inhalten und dem Verbreiten der Myriaden von Botschaften beschäftigen. Er stellt die bekannten und unbekannten Pioniere der Informationsgesellschaft vor: Claude Shannon, Norbert Wiener, Ada Byron, Alan Turing und andere. Er bietet dem Leser neue Einblicke in die Mechanismen des Informationsaustausches. So lernt dieser etwa die sich selbst replizierende Meme kennen, die "DNA" der Informationen. Sein Buch ermöglicht ein neues Verständnis von Musik, Quantenmechanik - und eine gänzlich neue Sicht auf die faszinierende Welt der Informationen.

- Abstract
