    "Kooperationsvereinbarung zur Systematikpflege der Allgemeinen Systematik für öffentliche Bibliotheken (ASB) und der Klassifikation für Allgemeinbibliotheken (KAB) zwischen dem Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e. V. (BIB), dem Deutscher Bibliotheksverband e. V. (DBV) und der ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH (ekz). Präambel Aufgrund der Auflösung des EDBI und fehlender, kurzfristig greifender Nachfolgeregelungen vereinbaren BIB, DBV und ekz eine Kooperation zur Wahrnehmung der Pflege der Systematiken ASB und KAB. Alle drei Kooperationspartner sind an der Pflege dieser Systematiken interessiert und wollen im Rahmen ihrer begrenzten Möglichkeiten eine Auffanglösung finden, um das Know-how, die Daten, das Urheberrecht und Akten zur Systematikpflege der letzten Jahre zu sichern, die Neuausgabe der KAB abzuschließen und Verfahren zu entwickeln, um die Systematikpflege zu gewährleisten. Dazu ist das entstehende Kompetenznetzwerk in geeigneter Form einzubeziehen. Im Rahmen dieser gemeinsamen Initiative soll ein langfristiger Weg gefunden werden, um auf pragmatischem Wege eine schrittweise Anpassung beider Systematiken zu erreichen. Eine künftige Erweiterung der Kooperation auf weitere Standardsystematiken öffentlicher Bibliotheken ist vorstellbar. § 1 Zweck Zweck dieser Kooperationsvereinbarung ist die laufende Aktualisierung der ASB und der KAB. Darüber hinaus können bei Einvernehmen der Vertragspartner alle Vorhaben mit einbezogen werden, die dem Einsatz dieser Systematiken in der Praxis und in zentralen Dienstleistungen sowie der Verbreitung der Systematiken dienlich sind.

    "Demnächst erscheinen im Verlag Bock + Herchen Gliederung und Alphabetisches Register der KAB/E als Teil einer neuen, zwei Bände umfassenden Ausgabe. Das dazugehörige Systematische Schlagwortregister wird noch im Sommer vorliegen. Seit der ersten Information über die Bearbeitung der ostdeutschen »Klassifikation für Allgemeinbibliotheken« (KAB) in BuB' sind mehr als zwei Jahre vergangen. Trotz der laufenden Abwicklung bot das Ehemalige Deutsche Bibliotheksinstitut (EDBI) bis zuletzt relativ gute Bedingungen für die Überarbeitung der KAB/E. Zum Zeitpunkt der endgültigen Schließung des EDBI, Ende März 2003, lag die Mehrzahl der Hauptgruppen in einer vorläufigen Endfassung vor. Der Abschluss der restlichen Hauptgruppen und die erst nach Fertigstellung der Gesamtgliederung mögliche inhaltliche Umarbeitung des Schlagwortfonds standen jedoch noch aus. Alle Bearbeitet und die Gremien des Bibliothekswesens waren sich damals einig, dass ein Abbruch der KAB-Revision zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht zu vertreten sei. Von fast drei Jahren intensiver Arbeit wäre ein Torso geblieben: eine unvollständige Gliederung und ein noch nicht umklassifiziertes Register - in dieser Form ohne jeglichen Nutzen für die KAB-Anwender. Die im DBI/ EDBI für die KAB verantwortliche Sachbearbeiterin erklärte sich deshalb bereit, die Aufgabe bis zur Fertigstellung der Druckausgabe fortzuführen. Trotz vielfältiger Bemühungen der Partnereinrichtungen - DBV, BIB, ekz.bibliotheksservice und Fachstellen - gelang es jedoch nicht, die Weiterentwicklung und Pflege der ÖB-Klassifikationen an eine Institution zu binden. Die geplante Integration in das »Kompetenznetzwerk für Bibliotheken« war kurzfristig nicht zu erreichen. Den besonderen Bemühungen von Dr. Heinz Jürgen Lorenzen vom Vorstand des Deutschen Bibliotheksverbandes und dem Entgegenkommen der Zentralund Landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB) ist zu verdanken, dass die Arbeit an der KAB/E ohne größere Unterbrechungen im Juni 2003 fortgesetzt werden konnte. Die ZLB gewährte Asyl, sie stellte einen Raum und die notwendige Telefon-und Internetanbindung. An dieser Stelle sei Dr. Claudia Lux und Gabriele Beger für ihre Unterstützung gedankt, ohne die es letztlich die vorliegende Druckausgabe nicht geben würde.

    Abstract
    Provides an overview of the installation of electrically and mechanically assisted compact shelving and procedures for relocating over 2.000 linear feet of books, scores, recordings and manuscripts, prior to, during and after installation of such a system at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Ohio, USA. In the light of concern expressed by librarians that patrons would be dissatisfied with the accompanying restrictions such as reduced browsing capability, slow retrieval, and their need to obtain instruction in operating the shelving, a survey was conducted among graduate and undergraduate students to ascertain their views of electric compact shelving for books and scores in the Music Library of Sound Recordings Archives of BGSU Libraries. The survey identified: apprehension concerning the use of the installation; the adequacy of instructions for use; the level of inconvenience / delay in accessing material; overall satisfaction; and the positive and negative features of the installation

    Abstract
    United States libraries use classification to provide subject browsing in open stacks. The DDC used by 85% of American libraries, is a theoretical, universal attempt to organize all knowledge. The LCC lacks intellectual consistency since it was based upon library warrant to organize materials in one collection. Many academic libraries use LCC because the Library of Congress' shared bibliographic records with the LCC call numbers reflect the collecting interests of academic libraries. LCC is more hospitable to change than DDC whoese phoenix schedules have encountered resistance throughout the world. Classification currently receives less attention than subject headings since United States librarians place great hope in the computer to resolve subject heading problems while remaining conservative about classification
