    Abstract
This paper recognizes the limitations of the existing file of Library of Congress authority records for subject heading assignment and validation. It makes recommendations for a new machine-readable file of authority records for topical subdivisions and for enhancements to the existing subject authority file. The recommended changes qould enable online systems to assist in subject heading formulation and verify, with limited assistance by human intermediaries, the individual components of subdivided headings. A study of subdivided subject headings in a large bibliographic database forms the basis of the recommendations

    Abstract
Suggests that an appropriate method for evaluating information retrieval systems is to focus on the individual actions users attempts to perform on a system. The evaluation criterion 'degree of match' between attempted actions and actual system commands is one of a series of evaluation measures including perceived measures and summary measures that were investigated. Results indicate that there is the potential for significant improvement of the OPAC's interface, particularly those parts of the interface which concern searching and revision activities

    Abstract
This study aimed to determine if the searching behaviour of remote users of LIAS, Penn State's online catalogue differed from those using the OPAC within the library. More than 1.000 searches done by remote users (those accessing the system via either dial-access or the university's computer network) were compared to more than 1.000 searches done by in-house users. Each search was duplicated step by step and analysed according to a pre-determined set of criteria. Although few dramatic differences were found between the 2 groups, there were enough subtle differences to generate interest. In general, remote users are the more sophisticated searchers, bearing out the assumption that remote users seem to have a better conceptual knowledge of how an information system should operate. On the other hand, they struggle more with the procedural details of how to use the OPAC. Dial-access users seem to constitute a unique group of users: their searches are often quite different than those done by either network or in-house users

    Abstract
Subject queries were extracted from 3 universities' online catalogues and analysed to determine the extend to which they matched subject headings in the LCSH. Computer analyses show that nearly 25% of the subject queries entered by online catalogue users are exact matches of LCSH. Yet, manual analyses show that, even though a user matches or closely matches LCSH-mr, the citations retrieved by this vocabulary are not necessarily satisfactory. Sometimes the closest LCSH-mr is not at all pertinent to a user's topic of interest. This study presents reasons why close matches of LCSH-mr are not always satisfactory and suggests approaches to finding the best matches of the catalogue's controlled vocabulary

    Abstract
Reports on a continuing project to study children's use of a graphically-based direct manipulation interface for science materials. The Science Library Catalogue (SLC), a component of project SEED, has been implemented in the libraries of 21 elementary schools in Los Angeles and will soon be implemented in a public library. The interface employs a hierarchical structure drawn from the DDC and implemented in HyperCard on the Macintosh. The study on the 2nd version of the interface indicates that children are able to use the Science Library Catalogue unaided, with reasonable success in finding items. Search success on the same topics on a Boolean command driven system was equivalent, but Boolean searches were faster. However, the Boolean system was more sensitive to differences in age, with 12-year-olds having significantly better success rates than 10-year-olds; and to search topic, with one set of questions being much easier to search than the other. On average, children liked the 2 systems about the same; the Boolean system was more attractive to certain age and gender combinations, while the Science Library Catalogue was more consistently liked across groups. results are compared to prior studies on the Science Library Catalogue and other online catalogues

    Abstract
NORDINFO financed project to evaluate OPACs from the end user's viewpoint began in Aug 91 and was aimed at discovering how different types of users carry out searches; how the different methods of describing a publication's contact are used; and evaluating how title, thesauri words and free text are combined in searching using the transaction log analysis method over a 6 week period. The results show that not even menus give enough guidance to an occasional user; free text searching was the most popular method; scan commands proved not popular. The number of searches retrieving no-references was similar in all libraries, while libraries differed in the truncated search terms. Multilingualism was a serious problem in all the online catalogues. Lists recommended improvements

    Abstract
Describes work of the BOPAC2 project, funded by the British Library Research and Inoovation Centre, from Sep 1996 to Jan 1997, to investigate the issues involved in managing large and complex retrievals involving Z39.50 searches, including searches of multiple databases. The system is a WWW front end that allows simultaneously access to a number of library OPACs via Z39.50. The system is designed to make access to large and complex retrieval simpler, similar records are clustered together and retrievals may be sorted in a number of ways and by different criteria. Describes the design, development and evaluation of the system with suggestions for future work

    Abstract
The provision of a comprehensive network of see and see also subject cross references has troubled cataloguers. Describes a survey in May 91 to explore Australian academic library practices with regard to the provision of cross references and perceptions of the importance of these in the light of OPAC searching capabilities. The study examines the provision of syndetic structure (hierarchical and related references) using LCSH. The study was limited to the appliation of LCSH in higher education, TAFE and state libraries with OPACs. Considers whether aspects pf LoC subject cataloguing policies and individual library practices are changing with the shift from the manual to the online environment. Offers labour-saving options tp provide user access to the syndetic structure of LCSH

    Abstract
FirstSearch is an on-line reference product from OCLC, launched in Oct. 91, that offers inexperienced end users searches easy access to on-line data bases through a simple menu interface. The flagship data base on the OCLC FirstSearch system is the Online Union Catalogue (Called WorldCat on FirstSearch). 14 data bases are available at time of press with a further 18 planned by the end of 1992. Although pricing of OCLC'a EPIC service is based on the standard connect time and display charges, the need for more predictable methods of charging led to FirstSearch use being sold in blocks of 500 searches. Bulk buying of blocks reduces the price per search from 90 cents (for 1 block) to 45 cents (from 160 blocks and above). Describes the experiences of Allen County Public Library, Indiana, one of the only 2 public libraries among the 16 initial test sites for FirstSearch

    Abstract
The implementation of our online integrated catalog ACORN at Vanderbilt University Library has been a complex and time-consuming task. The authority control component represents an important portion of the effort. The authority file consists of approximately one-half million name, subject, series, and uniform title headings, the majority of which were supplied to us by a vendor, Blackwell North America (BNA). Authority work has been integrated into our cataloging routine successfully, new headings are being added to our database daily, and extant headings are being validated online. This paper will cover a description of how Vanderbilt selected the Northwestern Online Total Integrated System (NOTIS); the ongoing editing of the authority file following the BNA processing; the interrelationship of Vanderbilt University Library's three processing units, General Technical Services (GTS), Medical Library, and Law Library apropos of the authority function; and some of the policies and procedures drawn up by the Authority Control Coordinator with the assistance of the other librarians in Monograph and Serial Services.
