    Abstract
The article discusses a series of usability studies on indexes from a systems engineering and human factors perspective. The purpose of these studies is to establish a set of user requirements that indexes need to satisfy. The results from the first set of studies are presented and suggestions made as to how these can be applied to improve the usability and quality of indexes.

    Abstract
The index to the second edition of The Canadian Encyclopedia was prepared on an IBM PC-XT personal computer using the IBM Professional Editor, custom programs written in IBM Pascal, and TeX a high quality typesetting program developed by Donald E. Knuth of Stanford University in California. The entries were chosen and keyed in by the indexer, and then alphabetized, formatted, and typeset by the computer. An unusual data entry format together with good typesetting software made possible the delivery to the printer of the 372 page camera ready index less than two weeks after the indexer received the final pages of text. TeX provides fully automatic pagination.

    Abstract
Library of Congress Subjecl Headings retrieved as the results of a search in an online catalog are likely to be filed in straight alphabetical, word-by-word order, ignoring the semantic structures of these headings and scattering headings of a similar type. This practice makes LC headings unnecessarily difficult to use and negates much of their indexing power. Enthusiasm for filing simplicity and postcoordinate indexing are likely contributing factors to this phenomenon. Since the report Headings for Tomorrow (1992) first raised this issue, filing practices favoring postcoordination over precoordination appear to have become more widespread and more entrenched

    Abstract
Describes the InfoAccess Project at the Univ of Saskatchewan Libraries which compared searching of manual and automated indexes by 22 undergraduate psychology students to determine their searching preferences by ranking 'Psychological abstracts' in 3 formats: print, CD-ROM and a locally mounted tape service called InfoAccess. Their satisfaction regarding the physical environment, equipment, and instructional aids was also recorded. Users preferred to search with CD-ROM, but found InfoAccess to be an acceptable alternative

    Content
Automated support to indexing forms a continuum from computer support to clerical activities, quality control, intellectual activities and to full automatic indexing. Describes the current indexing environment and examines the need for automated support. Reports on case studies of various indexing services which are at different stages along the continuum. Describes academic and corporate research projects and commercial indexing software. Examines the future of related technologies and offers advice on how to get started on the continuum

    Abstract
Die geschichtliche Entwicklung von ISO 2788: Documentation - Guidelines for the establishment and development of monolingual thesauri und ISO 5964: Documentation - Guidelines for the establishment and development of multilingual thesauri wird kurz beschrieben.
