- "Der Mannheimer Brockhaus-Verlag will mit der 21. Ausgabe seines Nachschlagewerkes demnächst die umfassendste Enzyklopädie aller Zeiten vorlegen. Die Zahl der Bände stieg im Vergleich zur Vorgängerausgabe wegen Ergänzungen oder neuer Themen um 6 auf 30 (Gesamtgewicht: 70 Kilogramm). Sie enthalten auf 24.500 Seiten 300.000 Stichwörter sowie mehr als 40 000 Fotos, Bildtafeln, Grafiken und Karten. Der Inhalt wird auch in digitaler Form auf einer kleinen Speichereinheit (USB-Speicherstick) angeboten und kann am Computer aufgerufen werden. In der neuen Ausgabe sei der Bildbereich stark erweitert worden, sagte Projektleiterin Marion Winkenbach. Zudem wurden 600 Quellentexte aufgenommen, etwa ein Zeitzeugenbericht zu Alexander dem Großen. Zu den neuen Themen gehören "Feinstaub", "Esskultur" oder IT-Sicherheit". Die Käufer erhalten zudem zwei DVDs mit 70 Stunden Spielzeit."

- Abstract
- Als Linklisten "der dritten Generation" werden in diesem Artikel Systeme zur kooperativen Verwaltung von Internetlinks und Datenbankbeschreibungen bezeichnet. Mit DigiLink wird ein Vertreter dieses Typs näher vorgestellt. DigiLink ist eine Eigenentwicklung des hbz, die sich besonders durch hohe Anpassungsfähigkeit im Layout und in der Organisation der verwalteten Bestände auszeichnet. Diese Flexibilität begünstigt den Einsatz in unterschiedlichen Bibliothekstypen, derzeit (April 2005) verwalten knapp 70 Standorte die rund 1.000 Einträge. Ursprünglich als Modul der "Digitalen Bibliothek" konzipiert, wird DigiLink zunehmend auch unabhängig davon eingesetzt und direkt in den eigenen Internetauftritt integriert.

- Egal, ob Musikinstrumente, Tiere oder bekannte Persönlichkeiten - an ihrem Klang oder ihrer Stimme soll man sie erkennen. Eine beachtliche "Audiothek" ist Bestandteil der aktuellen Brockhaus-Enzyklopädie, die bis zum Jahresende mit 30 Bänden komplett vorliegen soll, 24 sind bereits erschienen. Die dazu gehörenden beiden DVDs bieten mit 3000 Hörbeispielen aus verschiedenen Wissensgebieten, etlichen Filmen und Videos zur Weltgeschichte Audiomaterial für 70 Stunden. Da erklingen zum Beispiel ungewöhnliche Instrumente wie etwa das Bass-Krummhorn, ein altes Holzblasinstrument. Aus der Fauna meldet sich zirpend die Maulwurfsgrille, während die Tüpfelhyäne fast hysterisch kreischt und der Panda-Bär kurze Brummtöne von sich gibt. Hörbar bewegende Weltgeschichte Zu den hörbar bewegenden Momenten der Weltgeschichte zählt zum Beispiel Willy Brandts leidenschaftliche Rede mit der Forderung zum Fall der Mauer, die er als Berliner Oberbürgermeister in den 1960er Jahren hielt. Und wer bei der nächsten Europa- und Weltmeisterschaft im Fußball die Nationalhymnen der verschiedenen Länder kennen will, der wird ebenfalls fündig. Zur Auflagenentwicklung schweigt sich die Brockhaus AG aus, erklärt aber, dass die gebundene Ausgabe nach wie vor bei bibliophilen Menschen gefragt sei, die Wert auf gute Bücher legen und dafür auch viel Geld investieren. Immerhin kostet das komplette Werk samt DVDs in gebundener Form 2490 Euro. Preiswerter und erfolgreicher als erwartet, so eine Brockhaus-Sprecherin, sei der USB-Stick. Der ist bestückt mit sämtlichen Texten sowie beiden DVDs und kostet 1500 Euro. Käufer seien oft jüngere Leute und solche, die wenig Platz haben.

- Abstract
- Roles provide a key coordination mechanism in peer-production. Whereas one stream in the literature has focused on the structural responsibilities associated with roles, another has stressed the emergent nature of work. To date, these streams have proceeded largely in parallel. In seeking to enhance our understanding of the tension between structure and agency in peer-production, we investigated the interplay between structural and emergent roles. Our study explored the breadth of structural roles in Wikipedia (English version) and their linkage to various forms of activities. Our analyses show that despite the latitude in selecting their mode of participation, participants' structural and emergent roles are tightly coupled. Our discussion highlights that: (a) participants often stay close to the "production ground floor" despite the assignment into structural roles; and (b) there are typical modifications in activity patterns associated with role-assignment, namely: functional specialization, multispecialization, defunctionalization, changes in communication patterns, management of identity, and role definition. We contribute to theory of coordination and roles, as well as provide some practical implications.

- Abstract
- SFX is an XML-based product designed to inter-link electronic resources with other resources in context-sensitive manner. SFX was first developed at the University of Ghent by Herbert Van de Sompel and has been released as a commercial product by Ex Libris. Use statistics garnered from SFX's statistics module since the implementation in July of 2001 are discussed in the context of an academic research library environment. The results from usability testing conducted at Washington State University are reported. These usage statistics demonstrated a pattern of increasing use and exceptional use from FirstSearch databases.
