    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
To reason is to talk. To think is to use tools. To learn is to join a community of practice. This book explores thought and reasoning as inherently social practices, as actions situated in specific environments of demand, opportunity, and accountability. Authors from diverse disciplines psychology, sociology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, anthropology - examine how people think and learn in settings as diverse as a factory, a classroom or an airplane cockpit. The tools that people use in these varied settings are both physical technologies and cultural constructions: concepts, structures of reasoning, and forms of discourse. This volume in the NATO Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology is based on an international conference on situated cognition and learning technologies.

    Abstract
Reports on the experimental test of several causes of user errors while composing database queries. The query language under consideration is SQL. A query writing model was developed that integrated a GOMS type analysis of query writing with the characterisitcs of human cognition. This model revealed multiple cognitive causes of a frequent and troublesome error, join clause omission. This semantic user error returns answers from the database that may undetectably wrong, affecting users, decision makers, and programmers. The model predicted 4 possible causes of join clause omission, and empirical testing revealed that all 4 contributed to the error. Gives reasons why the frequency of this error increased. These results are significant for understanding user errors in general and for the developing new interfaces and training schemes for the task of writing database queries

    Abstract

    Abstract
In October 1997, the CONSER Program will join the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Hirons and Schottlaender discuss the developments that led up to the consolidation, the new vision for the combined program as expressed in a set of principles, and the benefits to each program. They also examine the potential for change in CONSER and PCC inherent in the acceptance of the principles.

    Abstract
Analyzes the communication norms of the major forms of computer-mediated communication. These forms include electronic mail, mailing lists, Usenet newsgroups, virtual environment, interactive massaging, and information services. Norms are the dominant standards for acceptable behaviour of a group of people. Each form of communication has a set of norms, which may be adjusted somewhat for a particular instance of communication for particular participants. new users of computer networks will find that the forms of the communication forums they may join are well established, but they will have the opportunity to create or participate in new forums where those norms may be somewhat different
