    Abstract
Reviews the consumer network Microsoft Network (MSN) which is bundled in with Windows 95. Gives a tour of the system, commenting about navigation methods, and highlighting problems with the FIND command. The system suffers from commercialization, aggressive tactics, bugs, and lack of content. Outlines a number of its pluses

    Abstract
Describes the successful creation of a computerized ready reference file, at the reference desk at California State University at Long Beach, consisting of some of the most frequently asked reference questions. The original ready reference file was on 3 by 5 cards and the project to computerize the file was constrained by time necessitating the use of dBase 3 Plus database management software as the only such software immediately to hand. The system is easy to use and maintain, and uses dBase 3 Plus or dBase 4 software

    Abstract
'Quality-controlled subject gateways' are Internet services which apply a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to secure a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display a rich description of these resources with standards-based metadata. Regular checking and updating ensure good collection management. A main goal is to provide a high quality of subject access through indexing resources using controlled vocabularies and by offering a deep classification structure for advanced searching and browsing. This article provides an initial empirical overview of existing services of this kind, their approaches and technologies, based on proposed working definitions and typologies of subject gateways

    Abstract
Reviews the PowerSearch multifile searching software introduced by ORBIT Search Service as it is used for searching patent databases. Looks at its useful features: deduping, patent family grouping, merge, and virtual file merging. Looks at some possible improvements to both PowerSearch itself and to the ORBIT system to accomodate PowerSearch

    Abstract
Roles provide a key coordination mechanism in peer-production. Whereas one stream in the literature has focused on the structural responsibilities associated with roles, another has stressed the emergent nature of work. To date, these streams have proceeded largely in parallel. In seeking to enhance our understanding of the tension between structure and agency in peer-production, we investigated the interplay between structural and emergent roles. Our study explored the breadth of structural roles in Wikipedia (English version) and their linkage to various forms of activities. Our analyses show that despite the latitude in selecting their mode of participation, participants' structural and emergent roles are tightly coupled. Our discussion highlights that: (a) participants often stay close to the "production ground floor" despite the assignment into structural roles; and (b) there are typical modifications in activity patterns associated with role-assignment, namely: functional specialization, multispecialization, defunctionalization, changes in communication patterns, management of identity, and role definition. We contribute to theory of coordination and roles, as well as provide some practical implications.

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
Describes a WWW based system which allows users to view, search and post geographically indexed information of the Earth. 2 geographic browsers have been developed: a 2D map browser capable of continuous scroll and zoom of an arbitrarily large sheet and a 3D flight-simulator browser capable of continuous flight around the Earth. On the server side, a geographical and geometrical server has been developed which contains large databases of images, elevations, lines, points and polygons stored in tiles structured into hierarchical pyramids or quadtrees. A metadata server has also been developed which contains URL pointers and geographical coordinates of various WWW documents, geographical information and geometrical models

    Abstract
The large number and variety of online databases in the field of environment sciences and chemistry underlies the need for a cooperative evaluation approach. Presents 2 evaluation criteria, divided into 4 headings; general criteria (size of data source, cost of 1 hour searching, updating of database, availability on other media); chemical relevant criteria (number of chemicals, identification parameters of chemicals, test set chemicals, development of chemicals), environmental relevant criteria (information parameters for chemicals, parameter development); and criteria describing environmental chemicals (use of chemicals, quality of database). A 6 number scoring system is applied to these criteria and the Hasse diagram technique is presented for 19 bibliographic online databases using these criteria. Using this technique, 'good' and 'bad' databases are identified and changes in the database content from 1995 to 1998 can be visualized

    Abstract
For laypeople, searching online health information resources can be challenging due to topic complexity and the large number of online sources with differing quality. The goal of this article is to examine, among all the available online sources, which online sources laypeople select to address their health-related information needs, and whether or how much the severity of a health condition influences their selection. Twenty-four participants were recruited individually, and each was asked (using a retrieval system called HIS) to search for information regarding a severe health condition and a mild health condition, respectively. The selected online health information sources were automatically captured by the HIS system and classified at both the website and webpage levels. Participants' selection behavior patterns were then plotted across the whole information-seeking process. Our results demonstrate that laypeople's source selection fluctuates during the health information-seeking process, and also varies by the severity of health conditions. This study reveals laypeople's real usage of different types of online health information sources, and engenders implications to the design of search engines, as well as the development of health literacy programs.
