    Abstract
    NOVAGate is a subject-based information gateway covering electronic resources in the agricultural, veterinary and related fields. The service, which opened in July 1998, is produced by the veterinary and agricultural libraries of the 5 Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden - which serve the NOVA University. The gateway covers Nordic and European resources as well as the resources of international organizations, but being planned is a network of subject gateways which will give access to a wide range of international quality resources within the agricultural, veterinary and related fields.     Abstract
    This article gives an overview of the design and organisation of DutchESS, a Dutch information subject gateway created as a national collaborative effort of the National Library and a number of academic libraries. The combined centralised and distributed model of DutchESS is discussed, as well as its selection policy, its metadata format, classification scheme and retrieval options. Also some options for future collaboration on an international level are explored

    Abstract
    Eine ganze Anzahl von Bibliotheken in Europa befaßt sich mit der Entwicklung von Internet Subject Gateways - einer Serviceleistung, die den Nutzern helfen soll, qualitativ hochwertige Internetquellen zu finden. Subject Gateways wie SOSIG (The Social Science Information Gateway) sind bereits seit einigen Jahren im Internet verfügbar und stellen eine Alternative zu Internet-Suchmaschinen wie AltaVista und Verzeichnissen wie Yahoo dar. Bezeichnenderweise stützen sich Subject Gateways auf die Fertigkeiten, Verfahrensweisen und Standards der internationalen Bibliothekswelt und wenden diese auf Informationen aus dem Internet an. Dieses Referat will daher betonen, daß Bibliothekare/innen idealerweise eine vorherrschende Rolle im Aufbau von Suchservices für Internetquellen spielen und daß Information Gateways eine Möglichkeit dafür darstellen. Es wird einige der Subject Gateway-Initiativen in Europa umreißen und die Werkzeuge und Technologien beschreiben, die vom Projekt DESIRE entwickelt wurden, um die Entwicklung neuer Gateways in anderen Ländern zu unterstützen. Daneben gibt es aber bereits eine Fülle von strukturierten Informationsangeboten, aufbereiteten Listen und Sammelstellen, die als Clearinghouse, Subject Gateway, Subject Tree oder Resource Pages bezeichnet werden. Solche intellektuell erstellten Übersichten geben in der Regel bereits Hinweise zu Inhalt und fachlichem Niveau der Quelle.     Abstract
    Describes the establishment of an Internet gateway local to the University of sussex, UK, firstly as a gopher and more recently as a WWW server. Describes a project currently uderway to assess the practical value of Internet searches to research and the consequential training and support requirements. Determines the value of a local gateway to academic researchers at Sussex and the roles specific to a local gateway that such comprehensive resources as Yahoo and BUBL cannot fulfil. The project is using an interview-based methodology to gain an understanding of researchers' views of Internet resource provision, and these interviews are being analyzed with the help of the NUD*IST qualitative data analysis software package
