    Abstract
    Ovid has supported a sophisticated interface for searching bibliographic and full text databases for some time. It is now offering a Web based version of this interface that is capable of accessing Z39.50-compliant OPACs and databases anywhere in the world. The Ovid Web Gateway builds on the Ovid Server, thus allowing for a variety of functions and configurations at user, group and database-specific level.     Abstract
    Eine ganze Anzahl von Bibliotheken in Europa befaßt sich mit der Entwicklung von Internet Subject Gateways - einer Serviceleistung, die den Nutzern helfen soll, qualitativ hochwertige Internetquellen zu finden. Subject Gateways wie SOSIG (The Social Science Information Gateway) sind bereits seit einigen Jahren im Internet verfügbar und stellen eine Alternative zu Internet-Suchmaschinen wie AltaVista und Verzeichnissen wie Yahoo dar. Bezeichnenderweise stützen sich Subject Gateways auf die Fertigkeiten, Verfahrensweisen und Standards der internationalen Bibliothekswelt und wenden diese auf Informationen aus dem Internet an. Dieses Referat will daher betonen, daß Bibliothekare/innen idealerweise eine vorherrschende Rolle im Aufbau von Suchservices für Internetquellen spielen und daß Information Gateways eine Möglichkeit dafür darstellen. Es wird einige der Subject Gateway-Initiativen in Europa umreißen und die Werkzeuge und Technologien beschreiben, die vom Projekt DESIRE entwickelt wurden, um die Entwicklung neuer Gateways in anderen Ländern zu unterstützen. Es wird auch erörtert, wie IMesh, eine Gruppe für Gateways aus der ganzen Welt eine internationale Strategie für Gateways anstrebt und versucht, Standards zur Umsetzung dieses Projekts zu entwickeln

    The National Information on Software and Services (NISS) is a centrally funded initiative for the provision of information services to the UK academic community via the JANET X.25 and IP (JIPS) network utilizing both Wide Area Networking protocols.     Abstract
    Describes the establishment of an Internet gateway local to the University of sussex, UK, firstly as a gopher and more recently as a WWW server. Describes a project currently uderway to assess the practical value of Internet searches to research and the consequential training and support requirements. Determines the value of a local gateway to academic researchers at Sussex and the roles specific to a local gateway that such comprehensive resources as Yahoo and BUBL cannot fulfil. The project is using an interview-based methodology to gain an understanding of researchers' views of Internet resource provision, and these interviews are being analyzed with the help of the NUD*IST qualitative data analysis software package

    Announces WebSPIRS v3.0, an enhanced version of the Web gateway form SilverPlatter Information, Inc. The update is an http gateway that provides access to the WWW via SilverPlatter's Internet Subscription Service on the librar's ERL network, using any forms-capable browser. This eliminates the need to install individual search software at workstations. Features in the updated version include: a new, simplified interface; search history capabilities; record selection and marking capabilities; enhancements to the thesaurus; point and click record display options; 'message of the day' option; and enhanced online help.
