    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to get a first approximation of the usefulness of online forums with regard to information seeking and knowledge generation. Design/methodology/approach - This study captures the characteristics of knowledge generation by examining the pragmatics and types of information needs of posted questions and by investigating knowledge related characteristics of discussion posts as well as the success of communication. Three online forums were examined. The data set consists of 55 threads, containing 533 posts which were categorized manually by two researchers. Findings - Results show that questioners often ask for personal estimations. Information needs often aim for actionable insights or uncertainty reduction. With regard to answers, factual information is the dominant content type and has the highest knowledge value as it is the strongest predictor with regard to the generation of new knowledge. Opinions are also relevant, but in a rather subsequent and complementary way. Emotional aspects are scarcely observed. Overall, results indicate that knowledge creation predominantly follows a socio-cultural paradigm of knowledge exchange. Research limitations/implications - Although the investigation captures important aspects of knowledge building processes, the measurement of the forums' knowledge value is still rather limited. Success is only partly measurable with the current scheme. The central coding category "new topical knowledge" is only of nominal value and therefore not able to compare different kinds of knowledge gains in the course of discussion. Originality/value - The investigation reaches out beyond studies that do not consider that the role and relevance of posts is dependent on the state of the discussion. Furthermore, the paper integrates two perspectives of knowledge value: the success of the questioner with regard to the expressed information need and the knowledge building value for communicants and readers.

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
The Konstanz-Hypertext-System (KHS) is an open hypertext system which employs internal and external information sources to satisfy the user's need for information when navigating through a hypertext. E-mail, Gopher and online databases are available in KHS as external information sources. The main tasks which must be carried out during an online search are analysis of the question, selection of the databases, formulation of a search strategy, online search, feedback and the presentation of the results. All of these tasks are supported within KHS, but special emphasis is given to database selection. Introduces a new method for selecting relevant online databases with KHS using the database descriptions from several hosts

    Abstract
Quality, quality control, quality assurance and quality management are becoming increasingly important in using online services and online databases. Focuses on the production of online bibliographic databases and discusses possible attributes responsible for the quality of this type of online database. Considers different stages in the production of the databases: acquisition of the original documents; quality of document analysis in the selection of the documents; and subject and bibliographic analysis. Shows how the quality attributes of the different production steps may be measured. Describes, as an example, a database production system with its testing routines and reference data

    Abstract

    Abstract

K3 helps organizing a course with constructivist and instructional elements. It is used to run complex discussions and group work as presenting knowledge in a controlled environment. Besides basic functionalities like acting as a file server to exchange teaching materials and providing asynchronous communication, K3 offers: 1. A sophisticated system of intellectual, semi-automatic and automatic performance parameters as a means of permanent feedback and transparent gratification. 2. A MyK3 version to personalize the system for each user, be it a student or a lecturer. 3. Extended retrieval facilities. 4. A report generator to assemble a single student's or a group's contributions. 5. An elaborated administrator sub-system to enable the lecturers to organize their courses. 6. A visualization component, K3VIS to get a graphical, semistructured overview about a discourse. 7. A role system (moderator, presenter, researcher, and summarizer) to classify the responsibilities of students during a group work. 8. Typed discourse objects to organize and structure a discourse and allow ease of proximate actions, like retrieval and navigation.
