    Abstract
Proposes a novel approach for future intranet communication. A software system, InfoVine, which has been developed and is based on this approach, shows how user models can help in performing interpersonal information retrieval and in viewing people as an index to information. Discusses the benefits of the InfoVine in the context of user profiling for information retrieval

    Abstract
The increasing expansion of the Internet has made resources available to users in sometimes unmanageable abundance. To help users manage this proliferation of information, librarians have begun to add URLs to their home pages. As well, specialized search engines are being used to retrieve information from selected sources in aneffort to return pertinent results. Describes the Harvest system which has been used to develop Index Antiquus, a specialized engine, for the classics and mediaeval studies. Presents a working example of how to search Index Antiquus

    Abstract
The performance of an information retrieval system depends on its ability to distinguish between relevant and non relevant documents in response to users' information needs. Proposes a new method called Codon Signatures (CS) that is able to use a relationship between terms and concepts. The Codon Signature is designed to improve retrieval performance (recall and precision) by creating the Codon structure, a representation of semantic meaning in context. It is also designed to reduce the amount of storage space required by the index. Presents a theoretical analysis of CS paprameters and performance. The method was tested against 3 document base collections and gave acceptable results regarding information effectiveness and efficiency, compared to a conventional Signature Files method

Describes what needs to be done to prepare knowledge organization tools for the future in the context of 7 challenges facing classification systems. Discusses work underway in the DDC to address each of these challenges focusing on: Updating efforts; features of Dewey for Windows; the OCLC projects; multilingual use of Dewey; and the development of a new database system with an authority control file for entries in the Relative Index and for linked entries from other theisauri

    Abstract
Presents a description system for the transformation of structured documents based on Context Free Grammars (CFGs). The system caters to transformations between different document class descriptions, and is presented mainly in Terms of logical structure transformation. Proposes 2 requirements for transformation; the output document class must be explicitly represented; and inconsistency must be avoided. Introducs a grammar for document class descriptions; tree-preserving Context Free Grammar, and gives Syntax-Directed Tree Translation (SDTT) for transformations of a document. The SDTT transformation is formal, concise and consistent with the above 2 requirements

    Abstract
An exploratory and experimental study for the purpose of testing a methodology which might be used to restructure the UDC class by class. The study uses the facet framework established in the Bliss Bibliographic Classification, 2nd ed., as the basis for the restructuring and the research is being carried out using the discipline 'medical sciences'. A thesaurus will be derived from the restructured scheme which will act as an index to it. In a broader context this research is an attempt to see how far it is possible to take the knowledge base of one classification scheme and impose the structure of another scheme on it

    Abstract
The WilsonDisc user interface for CD-ROM searching was evaluated using heuristic evaluation and observation of experienced users and used 2 Wilson Disc databases: MLA International Bibliography and Humanities Index. The heuristic evaluations identified 51 different problems, while observations found only 8. However, the major problem encountered by users: changing of the databases, was not found through heuristic evaluation. Suggests that expert evaluators explicitely consider the user interface environment, the context in which users elect to use the system

    Abstract
Knowledge engineering has been used to design an intelligent interface for the Juris-Data database, 1 of the largest case study databases in France. It was based on the legal classification elaborated by the Juris-Data group to index the cases. The system aims to to help users find the case study most relevant to their own. A methodology for the construction of legal classification of the primary document was designed together with a framework for index construction. This led to the implementation of a Legal Case Studies Engineering Framework based on the accumulated experimentation and the methodologies designed. It consists of a set of computerized tools which support the life cycle of the legal document from their processing by legal experts to their consultation by clients

    Abstract
Proposes a smart WWW page with associated knowledge enabling the page to react to pre-defined events and automatically perform actions such as prefetching. Since the active index is a powerful computing device which supports the incremental addition of distributed knowledge; it is used to implement the knowledge of part of the smart WWW page. Offers an overview of the active index covering index cell and interaction mechanism; index cell base and index cell type; the active index system; the power of the active index; the conceptual model of the smart WWW page; the architecture of the client system for the model; the internal structure of the active index system for the model; the model's application; knowledge-based information retrieval in hyperspace by prefetching; a prefetching algorithm and its experiment; the experiment of the active index system; and HTTP, URLs, metadata and client-server negotiation

    Abstract
OhioLINK, a consortium of Ohio academic libraries in both the public and private sector, is one of the first major attemps in the USA to create a virtual, statewide, library system. In addition to linking the holdings of participating libraries within the context of a 48 hour document delivery system for books and periodical articles, OhioLINK provides the platform as well as for the statewide delivery of commercial and other databases. Gopher Internet access, and experimentation tools. OhioLINK also represents a creative approach to state funding and computerized system design. Compares OhioLINK with OCLC

    Abstract
Creates an open, metadata aware system for distributed, collaborative WWW indexing. The system has 3 main components: a harvester (for collecting information), a database (for making the collection searchable), and a user interface (for making the information available). all components can be distributed across networked computers, thus supporting scalability. The system is metadata aware and thus allows searches on several fields including title, document author and URL. Nordic Web Index (NWI) is an application using this system to create a regional Nordic Web-indexing service. NWI is built using 5 collaborating service points within the Nordic countries. The NWI databases can be used to build additional services

    Abstract
The availability of powerful indexing and database products with easy Web connections means that libraries able to gather and edit their own data are emancipated from the large vendors. The Oregon State Library staff used the Data Magician translation utility as part of a complex, but speedy, database converison project. The Oregon Index database of approximately 300.000 records was converted from a BRS database host over to the Inmagic WebPublisher system. Describes the planning and action stepts used in producing the Web accessible index database of considerable size. Participants have high ratings to effectiveness of both the translation utility and the database engine
