    Abstract
The 1st International CDS/ISIS congress was organizes by the Columbian Association of CDS/ISIS users in cooperation with the Unesco regional office in Caracas, Venezuela. Reviews the programme including a detailed description of the CDS/ISIS library automation system which has 16.000 registered users and which can be run under MS-DOS, VAS/VMS, UNIX/INTEL or Windows. Written in the C++ programming language the system's main features unclude: portability; maintainability; upward compatibility; and client-server architecture implementation. Presents the text of the conference resolution

    Abstract
By providing the means for systematic arrangement, library classification has been used for centuries to organise document collections. The development of systems such as DDC, LCC a,d UDC, made classification sophisticated enough to be used both for the systematic arrangement of a collection and for information retrieval through the use of classified catalogues. Relatively short alphanumeric classification indexes are able to indicate quite sophisticated concepts, helping to overcome language barriers. With the advent of library automation, their role in the document retrieval process has become less important, in comparison with retrieval by natural language

    Abstract
The cognitive approach in the retrieval and communication of informatio, as well as in librarianship and information science gained importance in the 1970's. Today it is present in subject fields, as well as in studies of users, and aspects of information work. It has generated the formation of the cognitve paradigm, in many scientific disciplines. In the framework of Kuhn's concept of paradigm, it is evident that librarianship and information science are on the pre-paradigmatic level. However, some authors mention the existence of at least 2 paradigms in library and information science, the physical and the cognitive. Presents a historical overview of the cognitive oriented research works of Brookes, De Mey, Belkin, Ingwersen and others to provide an insight into the development of library and information science thought

    Abstract
Examines the formal relationships between global and local indices of the effectiveness of the processing of information in automated information systems, including, for example, the rationale use of information resources, and reliability. Shows that the global effectiveness does not exceed the local effectiveness of the elements of the system in question

    Abstract
The authors are students of librarianship in the faculty of philosophy at Ljubljana University, Slovenia. Users were asked to describe their library visits and summarise what was most helpful and least helpful about the service received. In the list of best practices, the most frequent feature was that the staff member really listened (58,9%). Other aspects of most helpful behaviour (e.g. using different body language, showing genuine interest, willingness to investigate further) occured in less than 40% of the interviews. 3 features of least helpful behaviour were listed in more than 30% of the cases; not asking the user anything about the question and making no effort to determine the specific need, not telling the user what he/she was doing, making no effort to determine whether the user had found the relevant information

    Abstract
Explains the principles of hypertext systems and defines these as information management systems characterised by their ability to provide links between individual text segments. Describes and compares the characteristics of 3 systems: HYPERTIES, GUIDE and INTERES. Descusses hardware rewuirements: all 3 will run on IBM compatible personal computers, with preferably 1 MB RAM, either under MS DOS (HYPERTIES and INTERES) or Windows (GUIDE). Concludes that GUIDE, with complex retrieval functions, seems to be the most sophisticated hypertext tool of those evaluated

    Abstract
Information technology has brought with it the problem of protecting authors' rights related to copyrighted works on electronic media. Describes a new system of labelling copyrighted works on the Internet, called DOI, developed in the USA. At the presentation at the bookfair in Frankfurt, 250.000 works were leabelled with DOI. The system is universal and enables the inclusion of current standard identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, SICI). The fact that a DOI identifier stays 'glued on' forever, makes the identification of the carrier of copyright possible at any moment. The DOI system presents the infrastructure system for trading in and use of copyrighted works over the Internet in the third millennium
