Abstract

Die Mathematik wird dem Leser in der Form zugänglich gemacht, indem mathematische Leistungen und deren Einfluß auf wissenschaft und Gesellschaft im Laufe der Jahrhunderte vom Altertum bis zur Neuzeit aufgezeigt werden. Die Autoren gehen bei ihrem Streifzug durch die geschichte besonders zwei Fragen nach, die sie vielfältig beantworten: Welche Art Geometrie braucht der Mensch zur Beschreibung der ihn umgebenden Welt? Welche Rechentechniken sind erforderlich, um die geometrischen Modelle anwenden zu können?
