Abstract

Klarheit über die verwendete Begrifflichkeit zu gewinnen, gehört sei je her zu den Tugenden wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens. Dies gilt besonders, wenn man es mit Begriffen zu tun hat, die auch zu den häufigsten Begriffen der Alltagssprache gehören, wie es bei 'Information' der Fall ist. Für mehr als 40 Jahre hat dieser Begriff, zusammen mit dem Begriff 'Sprache', die wissenschaftliche Arbeit von Harald Zimmermann geprägt, und Harald Zimmermann hat sich immer wieder mit der zugrunde liegenden Begrifflichkeit auseinandergesetzt. Wesentliches Element dieser Auseinandersetzung ist die Definition von Information als Prozess (Zimmermann 2004, im Anschluss an Kunz/Rittel), "der zum Zweck hat, das Wissen (den Wissenszustand) eines 'Akteurs' zu verändern" (Zimmermann 2004; ähnlich Zimmermann 1995). Der nachfolgende Beitrag greift diesen Begriff der Information auf und setzt ihn in Beziehung zum Begriff des Gedächtnisses, der in der modernen kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskussion eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Damit soll zweierlei erreicht werden: Zum einen soll der sachliche Zusammenhang zwischen Information und Gedächtnis verdeutlicht werden. Diesem Gesichtspunkt kommt deshalb Bedeutung zu, weil der heutige Sprachgebrauch eine statische Auffassung von Information im Sinne von 'Gedächtnis' suggeriert, als ob damit ein manifestes Substrat bezeichnet werde, das - gleichsam wie in einem Gedächtnis - bewahrt oder aufbewahrt wird, das aufbewahrenswert ist und das man bei Bedarf abrufen kann. Es wird sich zeigen, dass 'Gedächtnis' oder 'kulturelles Gedächtnis' die Voraussetzung von Information ist, nicht aber mit ihr identifiziert werden darf Zum anderen soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob Informationsprozesse, wie sie in Informationssystemen ablaufen, an eine bestimmte Form gebunden sind, die für unsere Kultur bestimmend ist, etwa an die Form des visuell oder auditiv wahrnehmbaren Dokuments und an die Möglichkeit, dieses analog oder digital zu speichern. Hintergrund dieser Frage ist die Annahme, dass Information als Prozess nicht an Schrift gebunden ist, sondern dass z.B. auch in Kulturen der Oralität, in denen keine Methoden der analogen oder digitalen Speicherung existieren, Informationsprozesse ein wesentliches Element gesellschaftlicher Kommunikation darstellen. Um diese Fragen zu klären, werden zunächst erneut wesentliche Bestimmungsstücke des Informationsbegriffs umrissen. Sodann wird, stellvertretend für einen allgemeinen Gedächtnisbegriff, der Assmansche Begriff des 'kulturellen Gedächtnisses' erörtert, woraus sich schließlich einige Schlussfolgerungen für den Umgang mit 'Information' ergeben.
