- Rez. in: IWP 60(2009) H.2, S.104 (U. Spree): "Immer wieder kommt die 'freie Enzyklopädie' Wikipedia wegen ihres Editiermodells in die Schlagzeilen. Beispielsweise erwirkte Lutz Heilmann MdB (Die Linke) im November 2008 eine einstweilige Verfügung, die es dem Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. untersagte, die Internetadresse wikipedia.de auf die Internetadresse wikipedia.org umzuleiten, solange die nach Einschätzung des Politikers rufschädigenden und persönlichkeitsverletzenden Einträge zu seiner Person in der Enzyklopädie fortbestünden. Die Wikipedia war unter der Adresse wikipedia.de für einige Stunden nicht erreichbar. Der Eintrag wurde von Wikipediaredakteuren anschließend stark bearbeitet und daraufhin die Adressumleitung wieder frei geschaltet. Gleichzeitig kündigte Wikipedia an, dass sie gegen die Entscheidung des Landgerichts Lübeck vorgehen werde. Fälle wie diese belegen das große öffentliche Interesse an Aspekten der Qualität, respektive Objektivität der Wikipedia. Gerade weil Diskussionen um die Qualiät und Verlässlichkeit der Wikipedia in den Medien in der Regel eher polemisch geführt werden, ist es zu begrüßen, wenn sich auch aus fachwissenschaftlicher Perspektive Publikationen kritisch mit dieser Fragestellung auseinandersetzen. Henrik Grotjahn widmet sich in seiner Magisterarbeit "Konstruktion von Qualität", angenommen am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft Münster 2007 (Original recherchierbar über den Katalog der Universitätsbibliothek Münster), die vom VDM Verlag Dr. Müller unter dem Titel "Qualitätsmessungen an der Wikipedia" publiziert wurde, der Frage, ob es der Wikipedia auf dem Wege der kollaborativen Erarbeitung gelungen ist, ein enzyklopädisches Nachschlagewerk zu schaffen, das in seiner Qualität mit traditionellen Verlagsprodukten mithalten oder diese sogar qualitativ übertreffen kann.

Daher verwundert nicht, dass die Popularisierung des Internet Bibliothekare und Bibliotheken frühzeitig dazu veranlasst hat, ihre Auskunftsdienstleistungen im Web anzubieten. Dies geschah zunächst durch organisierte Auskunft per E-Mail, später per Webformular und vor allem seit 2000/2001 verstärkt per Chat. Als zusammenfassende Bezeichnung für diese Varianten wird meist der Begriff digital reference verwendet. In den USA, aber auch in Australien, Großbritannien oder Skandinavien schenkt man dem Thema Digital Reference schon seit mehreren Jahren größte Aufmerksamkeit. Die Zahl der bislang dazu publizierten Fachaufsätze lag Ende 2003 bereits weit über 600, jährlich im November findet seit 1999 die »Digital Reference Conference« statt, und mit DIG_REF sowie LiveReference existieren zwei Diskussionslisten, die sich ausschließlich mit Fragen bibliothekarischer Auskunft im Internet beschäftigen. Im vergangenen Jahr sind in den USA allein vier umfangreiche Monographien zu Digital Reference erschienen, darunter das hier zu besprechende Werk von Anne Lipow. ... Gegenwärtig deutet sich an, dass das Thema Digital Reference, Online-Auskunft oder Auskunft per Chat in deutschen Bibliotheken auf mehr Interesse stößt als in den vergangenen Jahren. Nachdem bislang vorwiegend (einige wenige) wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken ChatAuskunft anbieten, haben mehrere Öffentliche Bibliotheken, darunter die ZLB Berlin und die Stadtbücherei Frankfurt am Main, angekündigt, zukünftig auchAuskunftperChatanbieten zu wollen. Eine wichtige Rolle spielt in diesem Zusammenhang der weltweite Auskunftsverbund QuestionPoint, der von OCLC gemeinsam mit der Library of Congress betrieben wird. Auflage 2004 erschienen war, ist es eher ungewöhnlich, dass ein solches Werk schon nach einem Jahr "völlig neu bearbeitet" vorliegt, insbesondere, wenn man daran denkt, dass E. Poetzsch ebenfalls 2005 schon die 4. völlig neu bearbeitete und erweiterte Auflage der "Einführung in die Grundlagen und Methoden" des "Information Retrieval" noch im "Verlag für Berlin Brandenburg GmbH Potsdam", herausgebracht hat. Ungewöhnlich ist es natürlich nicht für diese Thematik, sondern lediglich für den erforderlichen Arbeitsaufwand. Dadurch dass sich die beiden Bücher notwendiger- und sinnvollerweise ergänzen ist die Koinzidenz selbstverständlich auch kein Zufall. Beides sind keine herkömmlichen Lehrbücher, im Sinne einer theoretischen Durchdringung dessen, was Information Retrieval oder naturwissenschaftlich-technische Information (NTI) ist, sein sollte oder sein könnte. Das Buch ist vielmehr eine Basis für das selbständige Studium, bei dem man praktische und theoretische Erkenntnisse zum Thema: "Wie erhalte ich wo welche Informationen über die verschiedenen Gebiete der Naturwissenschaften und Technik" gewinnen bzw. sich erarbeiten kann. Die Zielgruppen sind somit naturwissenschaftlich Interessierte, die im praktischen Selbststudium ihr Wissen erweitern wollen, Studierende in den Übungen aller Dozentinnen und Dozenten, die solche Fächer lehren, und selbstverständlich auch die "professionals", die sich permanent auf dem neusten Wissensstand halten müssen, denn als Informationsspezialist des NTI-Bereichs kann man es sich nicht leisten neuste Informationsangebote oder Angebotsbedingungen nicht zu kennen, gleichgültig, ob sie aus den Bereichen Astronomie, Biologie, Chemie, Geowissenschaften, Landwirtschaft, Mathematik, Medizin, Pharmazie, Physik, Technik oder Umwelt kommen."
