Mit einem einzigen Satz ist die Problematik treffend skizziert, welcher das Buch gewidmet ist: "With the development of electronic documents, it has become possible to store very large amounts of information; but storage is not of much use without the capability to retrieve, to convert, transfer and reuse the information". Kritisiert wird die weit verbreitet anzutreffende Ansicht, das Indexieren sei lediglich eine Sache vom "picking out words from the text or naming objects in images and using those words as index headings". Eine solche Arbeitsweise führt jedoch nicht zu Registern, sondern zu Konkordanzen (d.h. zu alphabetischen Fundstellenlisten für Textwörter) und"... is entirely dependent an the words themselves and is not concerned with the ideas behind them". Das Sammeln von Information ist einfach. Aber die (Wieder-) Auffindbarkeit herzustellen muss gelernt werden, wenn mehr ermöglicht werden soll als lediglich das Wiederfinden von Texten, die man in allen Einzelheiten noch genau in Erinnerung behalten hat (known-item searches, questions of recall), die Details der sprachlichen Ausdrucksweise für die gesuchten Begriffe eingeschlossen. Die Verfasserin beschreibt aus ihrer großen praktischen Erfahrung, welche Schritte hierzu auf der gedanklichen und technischen Ebene unternommen werden müssen. Zu den erstgenannten Schritten rechnet die Abtrennung von Details, welche nicht im Index vertreten sein sollten ("unsought terms"), weil sie mit Sicherheit kein Suchziel darstellen werden und als "false friends" zur Überflutung des Suchenden mit Nebensächlichkeiten führen würden, eine Entscheidung, welche nur mit guter Sachkenntnis gefällt werden kann. All Dasjenige hingegen, was in Gegenwart und Zukunft (!) ein sinnvolles Suchziel darstellen könnte und "sufficiently informative" ist, verdient ein Schlagwort im Register. Man lernt auch durch lehrreiche Beispiele, wodurch ein Textwort unbrauchbar für das Register wird, wenn es dort als (schlechtes) Schlagwort erscheint, herausgelöst aus dem interpretierenden Zusammenhang, in welchen es im Text eingebettet gewesen ist. Auch muss die Vieldeutigkeit bereinigt werden, die fast jedem natursprachigen Wort anhaftet. Sonst wird der Suchende beim Nachschlagen allzu oft in die Irre geführt, und zwar um so öfter, je größer ein diesbezüglich unbereinigter Speicher bereits geworden ist.

Scholl): "The book is based an a doctoral thesis titled "Global opportunity and national political economy: The development of internet ventures in Germany," which was supervised by Razeen Sally and accepted at the International Relations Department of the London School of Economics & Political Science, UK, in 2002. Its primary audience, although it is certainly of interest to policy makers, trade press journalists, and industry practitioners, is the academic community, and, in particular, (international) policy, business, business history, information technology, and information science scholars. The book's self-stated purpose is to explain "why Europe, despite initiating a tremendous amount of change ... failed to produce independent internet ventures of note" (p. 1) in contrast to the United States, where Internet start-ups such as Amazon.com, eBay, E*trade, and Yahoo managed to survive the notorious dot.com shakeout of 200I-2002. A few pages down, the objective is restated as "to explore the hypothesis of a global opportunity for technology innovation delivered via the internet and to explain Europe's entrepreneurial response" (p. 4). As a proxy case for Europe, the study provides a broad account of the changing legal and socioeconomic setting during the phase of early Internet adoption and development in Germany throughout the 1990s. The author highlights and details various facets of the entrepreneurial opportunity and compares the German case in some detail to corresponding developments in Sweden. Waesche concludes that starting an Internet business in Germany during that particular period of time was a "wrong country, wrong time" (p. I86) proposition.

Burnett combines the insights of neuroscience with theories of cognition and the computer sciences. He argues that contemporary metaphors - biological or mechanical - about either cognition, images, or computer intelligence severely limit our understanding of the image. He suggests in his introduction that "image" refers to the "complex set of interactions that constitute everyday life in image-worlds" (p. xviii). For Burnett the fact that increasing amounts of intelligence are being programmed into technologies and devices that use images as their main form of interaction and communication-computers, for instance-suggests that images are interfaces, structuring interaction, people, and the environment they share. New technologies are not simply extensions of human abilities and needs-they literally enlarge cultural and social preconceptions of the relationship between body and mind. The flow of information today is part of a continuum, with exceptional events standing as punctuation marks. This flow connects a variety of sources, some of which are continuous - available 24 hours - or "live" and radically alters issues of memory and history. Television and the Internet, notes Burnett, are not simply a simulated world-they are the world, and the distinctions between "natural" and "non-natural" have disappeared. Increasingly, we immerse ourselves in the image, as if we are there. We rarely become conscious of the fact that we are watching images of events-for all perceptioe, cognitive, and interpretive purposes, the image is the event for us. The proximity and distance of viewer from/with the viewed has altered so significantly that the screen is us. However, this is not to suggest that we are simply passive consumers of images. As Burnett points out, painstakingly, issues of creativity are involved in the process of visualization-viewwes generate what they see in the images. This involves the historical moment of viewing-such as viewing images of the WTC bombings-and the act of re-imagining. As Burnett puts it, "the questions about what is pictured and what is real have to do with vantage points [of the viewer] and not necessarily what is in the image" (p. 26). In his second chapter Burnett moves an to a discussion of "imagescapes." Analyzing the analogue-digital programming of images, Burnett uses the concept of "reverie" to describe the viewing experience. The reverie is a "giving in" to the viewing experience, a "state" in which conscious ("I am sitting down an this sofa to watch TV") and unconscious (pleasure, pain, anxiety) processes interact. Meaning emerges in the not-always easy or "clean" process of hybridization. This "enhances" the thinking process beyond the boundaries of either image or subject. Hybridization is the space of intelligence, exchange, and communication.

Janes not only provides the breadth of coverage expected in an introduction, but also depth into this important topic. Janes' approach is managerial or administrative, providing guidelines for reference work that can be applied in different settings. Janes creates a decision-making framework to help reference librarians make decisions concerning how, to what extent, and in what cases digital reference services will be delivered. In this way, Janes avoids dictating a "one-size-fits-all" model. This approach is the major strength of the book. Library administrators and heads of reference services will find the administrative approach welcome by helping them think through which digital reference policies and methods will best target core constituencies and their institutional environments. However, the book deserves a broader audience as professors will find that the book fits nicely in a general reference course. For all readers, the book is readable and engaging and also challenging and questioning. The book begins with a history of reference work, nicely positioning digital reference in this tradition and noting the changes wrought by the digital age. By doing this, the author establishes both continuity and change in reference work as well as the values surrounding this activity. These values are largely those from the library community and Support people's access to information as well as activities that support the use of information. Janes closes this chapter by noting that the continuing changes in demographics, technology, and connectivity will impact reference work in ways that are not yet imaginable. This introduction sets the tone for the rest of the book. Janes defines digital reference service as "the use of digital technologies and resources to provide direct, professional assistance to people who are seeking information, wherever and whenever they need it" (p. 29). This definition covers a lot of ground. Examples include everything from a public library answering email queries to commercial ask-an-expert services. While the primary audience is librarians, Janes continually reminds readers that many others perform reference activities an the World Wide Web. Furthermore, he cautions readers that there are larger forces shaping this activity in the world that need to acknowledged. In building a framework for decision-making, Janes outlines the types of digital reference service. This discussion covers the communieations modes, such as e-mail, chat, Web forms, etc. It also analyzes the modalities by which reference service is delivered: synchronous/ asynchronous. Using these two dimensions (communication method and synchronous/asynchronous), Janes presents the variety of contexts in which digital reference can take place and then outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each of these. This translates into a decision-making framework by which readers analyze their particular setting and then select the modes and modalities that world be most effective. This is a powerful device and demonstrates the many options (and perhaps also the obstacles) for providing digital reference service.

Musings an the "future" can feel dated already by the time of publication. Understanding Information Systems avoids this pitfall by remaining agnostic to "any specific application, time, or technology" (p. xv). There are no mentions of database capacity, bandwidth issues, or Google. Instead, the author uses a mathematical perspective-relying an numbers, equations, and quantitative logic-to explain information systems at their most abstract, fundamental level. There are 16 chapters in this book, conveniently mirroring the typical number of weeks in a university semester. Each chapter is relatively short and self-contained, accessible directly or out-of-context. However, the book progresses in a very logical manner and has an overall cumulative flow to it. Each chapter also concludes with a series of about a dozen exercises and problems. This is particularly useful for classroom settings. The first four chapters form a basis for understanding information, its organization, and its retrieval. In "Describing Information," there is a particularly good discussion of various definitions of "information." For readers without prior exposure to the slipperiness of such definitions, this presentation is certainly provocative and eye opening. The bulk of chapter two, "Representing Information," focuses an an explanation of binary representation, contrasting it to decimal and hexadecimal systems. It soon becomms clear that there is no single, "natural" representation system, and each system has advantages and disadvantages. Throughout the book, the author highlights alternative ways of thinking and approaching problems.

Immerhin lässt sich feststellen, dass die Vektorrepräsentation eine genial einfache Darstellung sowohl der im Information Retrieval (IR) als grundlegende Datenstruktur benutzten "inverted files" als auch der assoziativen Speichermatrizen darstellt, die sich im Laufe der Zeit Über Perzeptrons zu Neuronalen Netzen (NN) weiterentwickelten. Dieser formale Zusammenhang stimulierte in der Folge eine Reihe von Ansätzen, die Netzwerke im Retrieval zu verwenden, wobei sich, wie auch im vorliegenden Band, hybride Ansätze, die Methoden aus beiden Disziplinen kombinieren, als sehr geeignet erweisen. Aber der Reihe nach... Das Buch wurde vom Autor als Dissertation beim Fachbereich IV "Sprachen und Technik" der Universität Hildesheim eingereicht und resultiert aus einer Folge von Forschungsbeiträgen zu mehreren Projekten, an denen der Autor in der Zeit von 1995 bis 2000 an verschiedenen Standorten beteiligt war. Dies erklärt die ungewohnte Breite der Anwendungen, Szenarien und Domänen, in denen die Ergebnisse gewonnen wurden. So wird das in der Arbeit entwickelte COSIMIR Modell (COgnitive SIMilarity learning in Information Retrieval) nicht nur anhand der klassischen Cranfield-Kollektion evaluiert, sondern auch im WING-Projekt der Universität Regensburg im Faktenretrieval aus einer Werkstoffdatenbank eingesetzt. Weitere Versuche mit der als "Transformations-Netzwerk" bezeichneten Komponente, deren Aufgabe die Abbildung von Gewichtungsfunktionen zwischen zwei Termräumen ist, runden das Spektrum der Experimente ab. Aber nicht nur die vorgestellten Resultate sind vielfältig, auch der dem Leser angebotene "State-of-the-Art"-Überblick fasst in hoch informativer Breite Wesentliches aus den Gebieten IR und NN zusammen und beleuchtet die Schnittpunkte der beiden Bereiche. So werden neben den Grundlagen des Text- und Faktenretrieval die Ansätze zur Verbesserung der Adaptivität und zur Beherrschung von Heterogenität vorgestellt, während als Grundlagen Neuronaler Netze neben einer allgemeinen Einführung in die Grundbegriffe u.a. das Backpropagation-Modell, KohonenNetze und die Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) geschildert werden. Einweiteres Kapitel stellt die bisherigen NN-orientierten Ansätze im IR vor und rundet den Abriss der relevanten Forschungslandschaft ab. Als Vorbereitung der Präsentation des COSIMIR-Modells schiebt der Autor an dieser Stelle ein diskursives Kapitel zum Thema Heterogenität im IR ein, wodurch die Ziele und Grundannahmen der Arbeit noch einmal reflektiert werden. Als Dimensionen der Heterogenität werden der Objekttyp, die Qualität der Objekte und ihrer Erschließung und die Mehrsprachigkeit genannt. Wenn auch diese Systematik im Wesentlichen die Akzente auf Probleme aus den hier tangierten Projekten legt, und weniger eine umfassende Aufbereitung z.B. der Literatur zum Problem der Relevanz anstrebt, ist sie dennoch hilfreich zum Verständnis der in den nachfolgenden Kapitel oft nur implizit angesprochenen Designentscheidungen bei der Konzeption der entwickelten Prototypen. Der Ansatz, Heterogenität durch Transformationen zu behandeln, wird im speziellen Kontext der NN konkretisiert, wobei andere Möglichkeiten, die z.B. Instrumente der Logik und Probabilistik einzusetzen, nur kurz diskutiert werden. Eine weitergehende Analyse hätte wohl auch den Rahmen der Arbeit zu weit gespannt,

Intertwined with the book's subject matter, which is to "distinguish traditional cataloguing from metadata activity" (5), the authors' chosen metadata definition is also detailed on page 5 as follows: Thus while granting the validity of the inclusive definition, we concentrate primarily on metadata as it is most commonly thought of both inside and outside of the library community, as "structured information used to find, access, use and manage information resources primarily in a digital environment." Discussion focuses on metalanguages, such as Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and eXtensible Markup Language (XML), "capable of embedding descriptive elements within the document markup itself' (25). This discussion falls under syntactic interoperability. For semantic interoperability, HTML and other mark-up languages, such as Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI), are covered. As an academic topic of human-computer interaction, Web usability has been studied widely for a long time. This classroom-oriented book, bridging academia and the educational community, talks about Web usability in a student-friendly fashion. It outlines not only the methodology of user-centered Web site design but also details the methods to implement at every stage of the methodology. That is, the book presents the user-centered Web-design approach from both macrocosm and microcosm points of view, which makes it both recapitulative and practical. The most important key word in Web Usability is "user-centered," which means Web developers should not substitute their own personal preferences for the users' needs. The book classifies Web sites into five types: E-commerce, informational, entertainment, community, and intranet. Since the methods used during Web development differ somewhat depending on the type of Web site, it is necessary to have a classification in advance. With Figure 1.3 on p. 17, the book explains the whole user-centered Webdevelopment life cycle (called "methodology" in this book review), which provides a clear path for Web development that is easy to understand, remember, and perform. Since all the following chapters are based on the methodology, a clear presentation of it is paramount. The table on p. 93 summarizes concisely all types of methods for requirements gathering and their advantages and disadvantages. According to this table, appropriate methods can be easily chosen for different Web site development projects. As the author remarked, "requirements gathering is central to the concept of user-centered design," (p. 98) and "one of the hallmarks of user-centered design is usability testing" (p. 205). Stage 2 (collect user requirements) and Stage 5 (perform usability testing) of the user-centered Web-development life cycle are the two stages with the most user involvement: however, this does not mean that all other stages are user unrelated. For example, in Stage 4 (create and modify physical design), frame is not suggested to be used just because most users are unfamiliar with the concept of frame (p. 201). Note that frequently there are several rounds of usability testing to be performed in the four case studies, and some of them are performed before the physical-design stage or even the conceptual-design stage, which embodies the idea of an iterative design process.

Each chapter opens with a brief scenario, generally derived from Crowley's extensive personal experience as a librarian, university professor, and consultant, exemplifying the theme for that chapter. In chapter one, "Theorizing for Diverging Contexts: Why Research Results and Theory Development are So Little Used Outside the Campus," Crowley describes a doctoral candidate's experience in presenting her research at a national conference of working professionals. When the presentation is negatively received, the student's mentor rationalized the response by stating, "You have to remember, most of the people in the audience only have a master's degree" (p. 2). From this example, a cogent argument is distilled on how pervasive the theorypractice divide is in various academic domains, such as business, law, sociology, and LIS. What is useful research and theory for academicians seeking career and professional advancement does not translate into for practitioners engaged in specific institutional/organizational environments. Cultural pragmatism is introduced as an aid to researchers in both camps for its inclusion of context specificity and the need for testing a theory's usefulness through continually analyzed experience. Herein, the structural foundation for the bridge is constructed in the section on communication. The development of an interlanguage between academicians and practitioners will minimize incommensurability, "the perceived inability of humans to communicate effectively with one another due to a lack of common standards for meaning and other shared foundations" (p. 15). In this vein, Crowley presents five maxims, based on the works of John Stuart Mill, for developing useful, real world theory. The chapter ends, as do several others, addressing the divide specifically in the LIS domain. One of the most thought-provoking chapters is "Developing a Research Philosophy," which includes sections on inductive reasoning, how people really think, and a discussion of the battle between intellectual formations and internalized models. As a teacher of experienced and/or mature students in an LIS program, I instantly recognized the description of a reoccurring classroom event: what happens when introducing theory or research results that contradict students' experiences, and therefore, their internalized models of "how things really work in the field." Crowley suggests that in seeking a research philosophy, persuasion should not be a primary concern. This simple suggestion encouraged me to reconsider my posture when faced with this classroom issue. However, this chapter may be considered one of the weakest in the book, because of its rather slim treatment of considerations for selecting a useful research philosophy, despite the emphasis on the importance of the concept. Nevertheless, this chapter is foundational to the work presented in the remaining chapters.

The DJ, notes Fuller is a switch for the pirate station, but is also a creator of hype. Storing, transposing, organizing time, the DJ is a crucial element in the informational ecology of the radio station. Fuller argues that "things" like the mobile phone must be treated as media assemblages. Pirate radio is an example of the minoritarian use of media systems, according to Fuller.

Sehr systematisch erarbeitet Ferber die grundlegenden Modelle und Methoden des Information Retrieval, Data Mining und deren Umfeld. Dennoch ist es in weiten Teilen ohne einige Semester Mathematik und ohne gute Informatik-Grundlagen nicht verständlich. Ferber überzeugt schon im ersten von vier Kapiteln über "Grundlagen und klassische IR-Methoden" mit einer guten Kenntnis der Retrieval-Praxis und Problematik. Einführend grenzt er Fakten- und Information Retrieval, Hypertext, Expertensysteme, Management-Informationssysteme, Data Mining, Kategorisierung, assoziative Regeln und Wissensgewinnung ab. Im Kapitel Grundlagen definiert er Information Retrieval letztlich in Übereinstimmung mit der Gesellschaft für Informatik, die eine Fachgruppe dazu unterhält. Vagheit, Unschärfe und Unsicherheit prägen letztlich die Aufgabe des Information Retrieval als eine Gruppe von Verfahren mit dem Ziel des Austauschs von Wissen zwischen Menschen. Im Dialog zwischen Informatik und Kognitionswissenschaften sieht er noch viele offene Fragen. Einfach gesagt: Wenn jemand bei Google ein Suchwort eintippt, woher soll der Rechner dann wissen, welche Antwort für diesen Menschen in dieser Situation gerade die beste ist? Auf rund 70 Seiten erarbeitet er alle wesentlichen Retrieval-Ansätze bis zum Vektorraum-Modell und TREC, dem jährlichen wissenschaftlichen Wettkampf der Systeme. Es geht um boolesche Techniken und ihre Schwächen, um Klassifikationsund Thesauruskonzepte, linguistische Verfahren, Gewichtungsverfahren, Relevance Feedback, Vektorraum und die Messverfahren für Retrievalqualität. Auf den nächsten 70 Seiten führt er die Grundlagen der statistischen Verfahren ein, die heute als Data-Mining oder TextMining bezeichnet werden. Hier geht es um maschinelles Lernen, Kategorisierung, Clustering und assoziative Regeln. Spätestens hier wird der gewöhnliche Dokumentar oder Bibliothekar stöhnen was nicht gegen das Buch spricht, nur gegen deren traditionelle Ausbildung. Deutlich wird dabei, dass mit mathematischen Verfahren die klassischen Verfahren im Ergebnis erreicht werden sollen: Kategorisierung (wenige Hauptschlagworte), Clustering (Klassen) oder eben thesaurusähnliche Termpaarbildungen. Das Ziel ist weitgehend gleich doch die Zielerreichung grundlegend verschieden. Genau diese mathematischen Verfahren werden im dritten Kapitel weiter vertieft. Insbesondere die korpusbasierten Verfahren sind hier wichtig, wie kann man in einer ganzen großen Menge sinnvolle Termpaare oder gar Termnetze finden, also Kookurrenzen, Begriffe, die signifikant häufig gemeinsam vorkommen. Solche Verfahren sind auch im multilingualen Retrieval interessant, um automatisch sinnvolle Übersetzungen zu finden, indem Texte, die in mehreren Sprachen vorliegen jeweils auf Paare untersucht werden. Solche Netze können teils mit Lehrer trainiert, nachträglich korrigiert oder ohne Aufsicht entstehen. Ferber zeigt sachlich neutral die Verfahren auf, eine klare Entscheidung des Autors für das eine oder andere Verfahren ist nicht zu erkennen. Diese Position ist durch die TRECErgebnisse begründet, denn bislang konnte sich noch keines der Verfahren weit vom Durchschnitt entfernen.
