    Abstract
    Wer wissen will, wie alt ein Wort ist, woher es stammt, welche Bedeutung es ursprünglich hatte und mit welchen anderen Wörtern es zusammenhängt, findet in diesem Nachschlagewerk präzise Angaben über "tó étymon", den "wahren Sinn eines Wortes". In über 8 000 Einträgen gibt das 'Etymologische Wörterbuch des Deutschen' Auskunft über den Grundwortschatz der deutschen Sprache: Herkunft, Entwicklung, Bedeutung und Verwandtschaft von rund 22 000 Wörtern werden erschlossen. Verzeichnet sind das erste Auftreten eines Wortes im Deutschen, verwandte Formen innerhalb des Germanischen, indoeuropäische Wurzeln, kurz die Ursprungsform. Oberregionale Ausdrücke der Umgangssprache fehlen ebensowenig wie fachsprachliche Begriffe oder geläufige Fremdwörter, die in ihre Ursprungssprache zurückverfolgt werden. Bedeutungshinweise verdeutlichen die semantischen Bezüge zwischen Sprach- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte. Ableitungen und Zusammensetzungen eines Stichworts sind mit Angabe ihres Erstbelegs aufgeführt. Innersprachliche Zusammenhänge und lauthistorische Gesetzmäßigkeiten eröffnen sich dadurch dem an Sprache interessierten Leser.

    Das Rahmenthema der Tagung kam aufgrund des vor und nach der ISKO-Konferenz abgehaltenen "UN World Summit an an Information Society" zustande. Im Titel des Buches ist die "globale Wissensgesellschaft" freilich eher irreführend, da keiner der darin abgedruckten Beiträge zentral davon handelt. Der eine der beiden Vorträge, die den Begriff selbst im Titel anführen, beschäftigt sich mit der Konstruktion einer Taxonomie für "cultural literacy" (O'Keefe), der andere mit sogenannten "naiven Klassifikationssystemen" (Beghtol), d.h. solchen, die im Gegensatz zu "professionellen" Systemen von Personen ohne spezifisches Interesse an klassifikatorischen Fragen entwickelt wurden. Beiträge mit "multi-kulti"-Charakter behandeln etwa Fragen wie - kulturübergreifende Arbeit, etwa beim EU-Filmarchiv-Projekt Collate (Albrechtsen et al.) oder einem Projekt zur Maori-Kultur (Liew); - Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. Übersetzung, z.B. der koreanischen Dezimalklassifikation (Kwasnik & Chun), eines auf der Sears ListofSubject Headings basierenden slowenischen Schlagwortvokabulars (Zalokar), einer spanisch-englischen Schlagwortliste für Gesundheitsfragen (Rosemblat et al.); - universelle Klassifikationssysteme wie die Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (Joan Mitchell über die DDC 22, sowie zwei weitere Beiträge) und die Internationale Dezimalklassifikation (la McIlwaine über Geographika, Nancy Williamson über Alternativ- und Komplementärmedizin in der UDC). Unter den 55 Beiträgen finden sich folgende - aus der Sicht des Rezensenten - besonders interessante thematische "Cluster": - OPAC-orientierte Beiträge, etwa über die Anforderungen bei derAutomatisierung analytisch-synthetischer Klassifikationssysteme (Slavic & Cordeiro) sowie Beiträge zu Benutzerforschung und -verhalten (Lee & Clyde; Miller); - Erschliessung und Retrieval von visuellen bzw. multimedialen Ressourcen, insbesondere mit Ausrichtung auf Thesauri (Hudin; Garcia Jimenez & De Valle Gastaminza; Rafferty & Hidderley); - Thesaurus-Standards (Dextre Clark et al.), Thesauri und Endbenutzer (Shiri & Revie); - Automatisches Klassifizieren (Vizine-Goetz & Beall mit Bezug auf die DDC; Na et al. über methodische Ansätze bei der Klassifizierung von Produktbesprechungen nach positiven bzw. negativen Gefühlsäusserungen); - Beiträge über (hierzulande) weniger bekannte Systeme wie Facettenklassifikation einschliesslich der Bliss-Klassifikation sowie der Umsetzung der Ideen von Ranganathan durch E.J. Coates (vier Vorträge), die Sachs-Klassifikation (Sachs & Smiraglia) sowie M. S. van der Walts Schema zur Klassifizierung elektronischer Dokumente in Klein- und Mittelbetrieben. Auch die übrigen Beiträge sind mehrheitlich interessant geschrieben und zeugen vom fachlichen Qualitätsstandard der ISKO-Konferenzen. Der Band kann daher bibliothekarischen bzw. informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen sowie Bibliotheken mit Sammelinteresse für Literatur zu Klassifikationsfragen ausdrücklich empfohlen werden. Ausserdem darf der nächsten (= neunten) internationalen ISKO-Konferenz, die 2006 in Wien abgehalten werden soll, mit Interesse entgegengesehen werden.

    Ohne die Arbeit der Spiegelneurone, so die These des Autors, könnten wir niemals im dichten Gedränge eines Supermarkts dem dicken Mann am Nachbarregal ausweichen oder unseren Partner erkennen, wenn wir nur den Schatten seiner Gestalt oder seiner Bewegungen erahnen. Liebe und Flirt seien ohne die intelligenten Zellen undenkbar. Schließlich liege das Wesen der Liebe in einem Einschwingen auf einen gemeinsamen Aufmerksamkeitsfokus begründet: »Ich fühle, was du fühlst.« Seit der Entdeckung der Spiegelneurone, die der renommierte Neurowissenschaftler Vilayanur S. Ramachandran als ähnlich bedeutenden Durchbruch pries wie das Aufspüren der DNA, haben die Forscher ihnen viel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. So wurde in der Fachwelt etwa die Entwicklung der Sprache mit ihnen in Verbindung gebracht, es gab aktuelle Untersuchungen zum Autismus oder zum Nachvollziehen von Schmerzempfinden. Übereinstimmend identifizierten viele Wissenschaftler die Spiegelneurone als wichtige Funktionsträger bei komplexen kognitiven Prozessen wie etwa bei Empathie und Intuition. Und auch ihr Entdecker Rizzolatti hat vor Kurzem in der Zeitschrift »Science» einen neuen Überblick über ihr Wirken gegeben (Bd. 308, S. 662, 29. April 2005). Joachim Bauer trifft im Wortsinn einen Nerv: Es beleuchtet ein spannendes Thema, das viel Potenzial für weitere Forschung bietet. Sein Buch ist verständlich geschrieben und gut nachvollziehbar. Allerdings bleibt der Autor über weite Strecken zu sehr im Allgemeinen. Wo er Alltagsbeispiele und Geschichten einflicht, wirkt das Buch sofort viel lebendiger; aber diese Stellen sind selten. Allzu leicht verliert sich der Autor in Abhandlungen etwa über Gewalt im Fernsehen oder das Verhalten in problematischen Beziehungen. Zudem bricht er interessante Gedankengänge und Aspekte oft gerade dann ab, wenn es spannend wird, so etwa in seinem Kapitel über Autismus oder über Intersubjektivität und Ethik. Hinweise auf Fachbücher und neue Studien beziehungsweise genaue Versuchsanordnungen tauchen nur am Rand auf. Wer in die Tiefe gehen möchte, muss sich an die Hinweise in der Literaturliste halten. Dennoch: Lesern, die sich für das Thema interessieren und ein bisschen »reinschnuppern« möchten, sei Bauers Buch als Einstiegslektüre durchaus empfohlen.
