- Abstract
- Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22) will be issued simultaneously in print and web versions in July 2003. The new edition is the first full print update to the Dewey Decimal Classification system in seven years-it includes several significant updates and many new numbers and topics. DDC 22 also features some fundamental structural changes that have been introduced with the goals of promoting classifier efficiency and improving the DDC for use in a variety of applications in the web environment. Most importantly, the content of the new edition has been shaped by the needs and recommendations of Dewey users around the world. The worldwide user community has an important role in shaping the future of the DDC.

Die Ergänzungslieferung enthält unter anderem Änderungen an § 8,2 (hier wurde die Priorisierung der Individualnamen zu Ungunsten der Allgemeinbegriffe aufgehoben), § 12,8 (Wegfall der Pauschalverweisungen), § 701 (durch eine neue Darstellung der Hinweissätze sind auch die Mundarten betroffen) sowie § 730 (Bauwerke). - Abstract
- Unter Rückgriff auf die klassische Vertragstheorie von Locke, Rousseau, vor allem aber Kant, und mit Hilfe eines in den modernen Wissenschaften zunehmend bedeutsamen Denk- und Sprachrahmens, dem der Entscheidungs- und Spieltheorie, entwickelt Rawls zwei Prinzipien der Gerechtigkeit und wendet sie dann auf die Grundinstitutionen moderner Gesellschaften an. Dabei geht es (u.a. auch) um das politisch aktuelle Problem, ob und unter welchen Bedingungen man auch einer demokratisch gewählten Regierung Widerstand leisten dürfe.

- Abstract
- Integration der Navigation und Suche in lizenzierten Journalen und gleichzeitig in freien digitalen Dokumenten unter einer einheitlichen konsistenten Nutzeroberflache ist eines der ungelösten F&E-Probleme der Fachinformation. Hierbei müssen Elemente des Invisible Web und des Visible Web unter Berücksichtigung offener Standards nahtlos miteinander verbunden werden. Der Artikel beschreibt Ausgangspunkt und Entwicklungsgeschichte eines kooperativen Vorhabens "Verteilter Zeitschriftenserver", das sich auf dem Wege über eine Generalisierung zum "Verteilten Dokumentenserver" zur Basis der Kooperation von vascoda und AGVerbund mit dem Ziel der Realisierung einer Offenen Digitalen Bibliothek der Wissenschaften entwickelte.

- Abstract
- Die deutsche und die vietnamesische Übersetzung der DDC entstehen in einer Umgebung, die für den grenzüberschreitenden Umgang mit der DDC günstig ist. Es gibt internationale Gesamtkataloge wie OCLC WorldCat, die die Recherche und das Kopieren von Katalogdaten über Sprachgrenzen hinaus ermöglichen. Bibliothekskataloge sind im Internet verfügbar und werden weltweit benutzt. Viele Nationalbibliotheken nutzen die DDC für Nationalbibliografien, darunter auch solche wie die Nationalbibliotheken von Kanada und der Schweiz, die die DDC in mehr als einer Sprache verwenden.. In internationalen Projekten wie Renardus wird die DDC verwendet. Wenn die DDC über Sprachgrenzen hinaus brauchbar sein soll, dann muss die selbe DDC-Notation in unterschiedlichen Anwendungsbereichen und Sprachen auch dasselbe meinen. Wenn die DDC-Notation 324 in der englischen Standard Edition "The political process" heißt, dann muss damit in den arabischen, französischen, deutschen, griechischen, isländischen, italienischen, norwegischen, russischen, spanischen und vietnamesischen Ausgaben Identisches gemeint sein. Dies bedeutet nicht, dass eine wörtliche Übersetzung erforderlich ist; kulturelle Unterschiede können berücksichtigt werden. So heißt die englische Version von 959.7043 Vietnamese War, 1961-1975 und die vietnamesische Version von 959.7043 Amerikanischer Krieg, 1961-1975; die Notation 959.7043 bezieht sich dennoch auf den selben Krieg. So ist der DDC-basierte Informationsaustausch über die Sprachgrenzen über die Notation 959.7043 weiter möglich.

- Abstract
- Der Bericht bietet einen Überblick und eine vorläufige Einschätzung der Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet des elektronischen Publizierens. Es werden Initiativen und Unternehmungen vorgestellt, die sich in die Aktionsfelder "neues Geschäftsmodell", "Selbstorganisation der Wissenschaften", "neue Kooperationsformen" und "Kostensenkung durch Wettbewerb" differenzieren lassen. Darüber hinaus werden neue Modelle für die Begutachtung (peer review) wissenschaftlicher Publikationen beschrieben.

- Abstract
- Das Thema Internet wird zur Zeit zwar intensiv diskutiert, bisher gibt es jedoch nur eine sehr geringe Anzahl an veröffentlichten Studien, welche die Nutzung des Internets im Rahmen der universitären Forschungspraxis analysieren (vgl. Savolainen 1998). Dies war der Anlass zur Durchführung einer explorativen Studie an der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen (SOWI) Fakultät der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, mit der Zielsetzung, die Nutzung und Bedeutung des Internets für universitäre Forschungsaktivitäten näher zu untersuchen.
