    ""Gebt ihr das lebende Kind, nur tötet es nicht." Verzicht aus echter mütterlicher Liebe und Sorge - jeden Leser der Bibel ergreift die Weisheit des Königs Salomo, der den Streit der beiden Mütter auf paradoxe Weise sich selbst entscheiden ließ. Denn höchste Staatsklugheit drückt sich bei ihm in der Drohung höchsten Staatsversagens aus: in der Drohung, das strittige Kind mit dem Schwert zu zerteilen, den Streit buchstäblich gegenstandslos zu machen. Die Computerisierung des Lebens läßt uns spüren, wie sehr wir selbst noch archaischen Familienwerten verhaftet sind, statt uns an digitale Beziehungslosigkeit angepaßt zu haben. Beispielhaft für unsere inneren Kämpfe ist der 92. Deutsche Bibliothekartag, der vergangene Woche in Augsburg stattfand. Die Bibliothek gehört zu unseren ehrwürdigsten Institutionen. Wer mit dem einen oder anderen Bibliothekar gesprochen hat, weiß die Vertreter dieser Institution zu schätzen: Sie zeichnen sich aus durch persönliche Integrität, Loyalität gegenüber ihrer Institution, leidenschaftliche Liebe zum Beruf, Verantwortungsgefühl gegenüber der Gesellschaft. Diese Eigenschaften drückten sich auch aus in den Herausforderungen, die in fast vierzig Themenkreisen und über sechzig Arbeitssitzungen zur Sprache kamen. Dazu gehörten etwa die betriebswirtschaftliche Prozeßoptimierung, der Einsatz moderner Methoden für Leistüngsmessung, die Ausbildung des Personals und sein effizientester Einsatz im Interesse der Nutzer und der steuerzahlenden Öffentlichkeit. Dazu gehörte die Verantwortung der Bibliotheken als Vermittler von Informationskompetenz, als Anbieter mullmedialer Lehr- und Lernmittel sowie als Verleger elektronischer Publikationen. Im letztgenannten Bereich geht es darum, zu den kommerziellen Verlagen in bestimmten Bereichen in Konkurrenz zu treten, um eine Senkung der exorbitant steigenden Preise für den Bezug wissenschaftlicher Informationen zu bewirken und die damit verbundene "Bibliothekskrise" im Interesse der Wissenschaft zu mildern. Schließlich drückt sich das hohe Ethos unserer deutschen Bibliothekare im Willen zu Selbstkritik und Veränderung aus, in der Bereitschaft, den "Spagat" zwischen "Kulturauftrag" und "Informationsmanagement", das Nebeneinander von Beständen traditionellen, gedruckten Wissens und moderner digitaler Informationshäppchen', die Probleme der sogenannten "hybriden Bibliothek" zu meistern. Wir können soviel Problembewußtsein nur bewundern - und müssen den sich darin ausdrückenden Idealismus doch kritisieren. Die Bibliothekare sorgen sich, wie sie mit so vielen neuen Aufgaben fertig werden sollen, und rufen nach mehr Geld, um Zeitschriften und Bücher überhaupt noch kaufen, die digitale Infrastruktur ausbauen und das Personal schulen zu. können. Aber sie wollen das Sorgerecht für ein Kind, das im Begriff ist, erwachsen und selbständig zu werden. Die Bibliotheken werden wie die echte Mutter in der Geschichte vom weisen König Salomo lernen müssen, ihren Zögling loszulassen, um ihn noch besitzen zu können. Die Technik selbst ist dabei nur eine von drei Triebkräften. Möglich ist es heute durch zahlreiche internetgestützte Informationsangebote, Güter und Dienstleistungen in globalem Maßstab zu vergleichen: Das betrifft alles, was irgendwie standardisierbar ist, und das ist sehr viel, etwa Bücher, Versicherungs- oder Bankprodukte, Maschinen und Zulieferteile, Rohstoffe und Handwerksleistungen am Bau. Der öffentliche Sektor ist dem Vergleich bislang am wenigsten ausgesetzt. Er fällt unter den Generalverdacht derjenigen, die den Konkurrenzdruck ertragen müssen. Lehrer beispielsweise gelten pauschal als "faul". Das ist stupid, liegt aber in der Logik der Sache. Politiker kümmern sich nicht ums Gemeinwohl und sind korrupt - das ist ebenso stupid, aber der Kölner Klüngel zeigt die Notwendigkeit, Ausschreibungen für öffentliche Projekte transparent zu machen: das Internet bietet dafür alle Möglichkeiten.
