    Abstract
Organization take differing views of how documents should be described, resulting in different stages for electronic document publishing. The SGML anf HTML electronic publishing standards are complementary and can be aimed at separate applications. Identifies suitable applications. With the use of these standards electronic document publishing and document management are merging. Highlights issues associated with this merger and trends in how these approaches can be applied

    Abstract
In 1995 and early 1996, the ISO standards process that includes SGML and related standards has seen a remarkable coalescence of efforts. DSSSL and HyTime are developing a sheared approach to tree strcutures and query languages. A consequence of this may be the development of a set of general facilities that can be shared among all SGML-based standards and that, when incorporated into products, will make documents easier to work with and more powerful in their ability to deliver information

    Abstract
Describes the work of the Working Group 8 of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 subcommittee 18 (JTC1/SC18/WG8) which is developing information technology standards for use in text and Office systems. In 1986 the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) was introduced as one of the key standards in developing systems for open information interchange. In Nov 92 the Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language (HyTime) detailed in ISO 10744 was introduced for the interchange of multimedia and hypermedia. They are currently working on a Standard Multimedia Scripting Language (SMSL) which will enable system developers to interchange multimedia scripts, probably using the UK developed Architecture Neutral Distribution Format (ANDF)

    Abstract
OCLC distributes several scholarly journals under its Electronic Journals Online programme, acting, in effect, as an 'electronic printer' for scholarly publishers. It is prototyping a WWW accessible version of these journals. Describes the problems encountered, detail some of the short term solutions, and highlight changes to existing standards that will enhance the use of the WWW for scholarly electronic publishing

    Abstract
Reviews the 6 principal forces driving electronic information publishing forward: volume of information; need to search for information; information richness; demands of management and distribution of information; low cost technologies (such as CD-ROM) and environmental impact making paper less attractive. Lists the corresponding forces inhibiting this change from print to electronic publishing; habit; incompatible standards; incompatible authoring processes; display incompatibilities; and portability limitations. Concludes with a list of key areas emerging for electronic information on CD-ROM; reference materials; catalogues; bibliographic and demographic data; merketing materials; educational materials; and records (replacing microfilm and microfiche)

    Abstract
Describes the current and future uses of SGML and Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language (HyTime) within UK universities. Academics' reasons for adopting these standards are to solve problems which are identical to those also face by workers outside the academic community. Research initiative and experiences of academics can provide other potential users with valuable lessons

    Abstract
The Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities was established jointly by Princeton University and Rutgers University in 1991 to provide a national focus for the development, dissemination, and use of electronic texts in the humanities. The Center's primary activities include documenting existing electronic texts, devloping a core collection of scholarly texts for access on the Internet, testing and promulgating standards for text encoding, and providing educational programs to support librarians, scholars and teachers who are developing, maintaining, and providing access to electronic texts
