    Abstract
This article contains a discussion of the bibliographical databases of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. Along with the national bibliographies are included catalogs, union catalogs and centralized services insofar as they have national significance for each country. German-language book production is reported on in many bibliographical databases, at the moment predominantly in printed form. However, an increasing readiness for the production and use of databases in electronic form is noticeable. It is to be wished that the necessity of better and more economical use of bibliographical resources will lead to increasing coordination and cooperation in the German-speaking countries.

Within the SOKRATES project Bavarian state, university and regional libraries are being equipped with locally automated systems. Regensburg university library has piloted the SISIS-OPAC-ONL version 1.0, adapted from the SINIX-based software SISIS-SE, with a machine readable stock of 1,66 million titles. OPAC-ONL offers 3 retrieval functions of different grades. Tests have been approved by Bavarian state libraries provided that certain faults are rectified statewide use of the OPAC should follow

    Abstract
In Germany there are currently only 3 public libraries which supply information by means of external data bases: the munipical library systems of Duisburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. Staff members belonging to the working group which has been established by these 3 institutions report their experiences to date. Findings revealed that data base searches offer a valuable supplement to the traditional reference tools, that new groups of users can be won by providing electronic information retrieval, and that the image of the library was raised in the eyes of the general public and the city administration. On the other hand, considerable effort is necessary in order to publicise the service and there are significant costs involved for the library and its users

    Abstract
Librarians in West Germany have thesauri for subject cataloguing through the use of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) with the Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD - Standard Keyword Data File). There is controversy over the terminological properties of standard keyword data files, over whether SWD is universal and whether inductive vocabulary construction is successful here. Some RSWK chain components have no separate semantic isentity and, although SWD has several aids for definition precision, semantic structures are not fully expressed. At present cooperative cataloguing partners using RSWK should use SWD with it as a starting point and think about possible improvements. RSWK with SWD is at present unsuitable for personal computers

    Abstract
The paper deals with procedures and problems arising when computers are used as tools in the production of indexes. The following steps of the procedure are explained and studied: 1) Correction of machine-readable records; 2) Production of index entries. Here, various methods and forms (KWIC, KWOC, rotation method) and dictionary use are described and discussed, and information about their advantages and disadvantages is given; 3) Sorting and cumulation of index entries; 4) Output and setting, output feasibilities are detailed. Emphasis is also laid on the problems arising from the non-satisfactory links of the processing chain: data recording, limited fonts, and choice of index terms.

    Abstract
Catalogs have for centuries been the main tool that enabled users to search for items in a library by author, title, or subject. A catalog can be interpreted as a set of bibliographic records, where each record acts as a surrogate for a publication. Every record describes a specific publication and contains the data that is used to create the indexes of search systems and the information that is presented to the user. Bibliographic records are often captured and exchanged by the use of the MARC format. Although there are numerous rdquodialectsrdquo of the MARC format in use, they are usually crafted on the same basis and are interoperable with each other -to a certain extent. The data model of a MARC-based catalog, however, is rdquo[...] extremely non-normalized with excessive replication of datardquo [1]. For instance, a literary work that exists in numerous editions and translations is likely to yield a large result set because each edition or translation is represented by an individual record, that is unrelated to other records that describe the same work.

    Abstract
Presents a feature of information science implemented for the 1st time by the offer of Science Citation Index (SCI) on CD-ROM: the implementation of the so-called bibliographic linking in a commercial data base. Discusses the difference between cocitation linking and bibliographic linking, and illustrates the implementation within the SCI data base by means of an example.

    Abstract
BVB-KAT is the catalogue data bank of the Bavarian Library Cooperative. In June 91 BVB-KAT contained 2,9 million entries. Linkes with this central system are local integrated systems which include an OPAC service. BVB-KAT comprises 4 linked files, including the title file, containing all bibliographic data included in ISBD except corporate bodies; these are in a separate data file, which can be linked to the title file on demand. The extensive use of the corporate body file in the cooperative leads to rationalisation and unification of data. Both files permit free text retrieval

    Abstract
The effectivity of bibliographic data depends upon clearly defined standards, prompt publication and a range of possible users. The Deutsche Bibiothek has converted data into UNIMARC for national exchange purposes. The keyword standard file of over 260.000 heading and reference forms is available on magnetic tape and microfiche. A central data file on corporate bodies, produced by the Deutsche Bibliotheksinstitut is also available. From 1989 the amount of information in topical index entries may be reduced. Further changes planned include more precise definition of collection guidelines, new operational forms for floppy disc and CD-ROM and selective bibliographic services for particular publication forms and types of library.

"Ein kleines Stück von GS 1 Germany fällt Verbrauchern eigentlich jeden Tag in die Hände. Auf Wasserflaschen, Gurkengläsern, Müsliriegeln oder Ringbüchern ist das Kölner Unternehmen schwarz auf weiß vertreten, weil es Herr über die Vergabe des Strichcodes ist. "Seit 30 Jahren verteilt GS 1 Germany an anfragende Unternehmen so genannte Internationale Lokationsnummern (ILN)" sagt Geschäftsführer Jörg Pretzel.
