    Abstract
Information access in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Libraries', New York, InfoTrax has increased from its formation as an electronic catalogue in 1984 to its current status of campus wide information system. This has been accomplished by including additional library materials, campus files, and outside data bases. Integration between data bases gives patrons access to call number and serials check-in information without having to switch files. An electronic request service allows patrons to hold, photocopy or interloan materials from their terminals

    Abstract
This article presents a user study showing the effectiveness of a linked-based, virtual integration infrastructure that gives users access to relevant online resources, empowering them to design an information-seeking path that is specifically relevant to their context. IntegraL provides a lightweight approach to improve and augment search functionality by dynamically generating context-focused "anchors" for recognized elements of interest generated by library services. This article includes a description of how IntegraL's design supports users' information-seeking behavior. A full user study with both objective and subjective measures of IntegraL and hypothesis testing regarding IntegraL's effectiveness of the user's information-seeking experience are described along with data analysis, implications arising from this kind of virtual integration, and possible future directions.

    Abstract
In 1989 Brabant Catholic University was the first university in the Netherlands to provide an online campus information service. Since that date other universities in the Netherlands have inaugurated systems providing a wide range of information services, including access to the respective library's catalogues. Ease of use varies from system to system and there is an urgent need to standardize system commands. Libraries can provide useful help in creating such services. In return ther services provide a useful adjunct to the organization's library

    Abstract
Presents a study to assist reference librarians/bibliographers in the selection of electronic formats of indexes and abstracts. It incorporated input from both general and experts users in a comparison of CD-ROM and Internet versions of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). The results indicate that CD-ROM technology, in spite of its user-friendliness, has limitations. The Internet version of ASFA has more current records, offers more comprehensive coverage of the ASFA databases, and allows unlimited remote access by faculty, staff, and students. Limitations of the Internet version include speed of access, search engine inadequacies, and the need for a more extensive training programme

    Abstract
In this issue we begin with Lamb, King and Kling who are interested in the effect of the industry environment on information gathering practices, particularly those involving information and communication technologies like online searching. They studied use of online services in 26 widely differing California firms operating in law, real estate, or biotechnology over a 17 month period. Data was gathered through semi-structured on-site interviews. Five influences on online usage were identified: interaction with regulatory agencies; demonstration of competence to clients; client expectations for timely, cost effective information; the possibility of shifting information responsibilities outside the organization; and the existence of industry wide infrastructures as information sources. The institutional and technical environment of a firm consistently circumscribes the domain in which choices of online resources are made by its employees. Firms the operate in highly technical and institutional environments have more incentive to gather information than do those in low tech unregulated industries.

    Abstract
Information provided through information networks can be retrieved through the network search engines by using words appearing in documents. However, these documents are written in the document producers' language and the users' perspective is often overlooked. Describes the Digital Information Service of Tampere Region (DISTR) project which aims to build a novel kind of WWW based local, information service. The DISTR service organizes local information services and public administration and commercial services (or resources) under a single interface which supports their identifiction and access by describing the resources according to dimensions and vocabulary identified in the discourse of service clients. Introduces the architecture of the DISTR service, the discourse analytic approach and preliminary results
