    Abstract
When designing hypertext structure the folowing must be considered: semantic structure of the presented knowledge, strucutre for the user considering his information needs, knowledge and the way he will use the hypertext to access information; and rhetoric structure. Non-hierarchical links between hypertext nodes created on the basis of extralinguistic non-specified associative relations might cause a decrease in recall and retrieval of information. In order to leiminate such defects, suggests the implementation of specified associative relations marked in the thesaurus to define adequate associative links in the hypertext

    Abstract
Information heuristics are concerned with the optimal strategies for information retrieval. The retrieval process is split into stages and the best methods of accomplishing each stage are described. The choice of an optimum retrieval strategy depends on the search subject, access methods and available retrieval tools. Information heuristics was introduced in the 1980s to the curriculum of Warsaw University library studies department to teach students general information retrieval methods and the knowledge necessary to find the best retrieval strategies

    Abstract
Describes the thesaurus that has been created at the Library of the Polish Parliament and is one element of the STEBIS system (System Tezaurusow Biblioteki Sejmowej). Discusses and illustrates with examples the rules of selecting vocabulary terms. The main aim is to map the contents of Polish and foreign documents and to preserve compatibility with the EUROVOC Thesaurus of the European Parliament. Emphasizes the need for the systematization of terms within one logical setup, with regard to the alphabetical and systematic part of the thesaurus and the multilingual character of the EUROVOC Thesaurus

    Abstract
The subject headings authority file KABA developed in the Warsaw University Library, Poland, is an alphabetical sorted list of entries containing information ordered according to uniform principles. The file is prepared in conformity with the guidelines for subject authority and reference entries (GSARE). 13 subheadings lists have been created to date. A list containing 517 subheadings forms the basis for the full authority file development. Describes ths structure and content of file entry and gives an example of an entry which contains all fields

Discusses how the prominence of linguistics, belle-lettres and literature in library resources has led the authors of classification schemes to pay particular attention to these subjects in their schemes. Focuses on UDC and how changes have been made in its schedules for these subjects, historically; and also on the complete revision of UDC in 1992, including the outline of new sections and sub-sections

    Abstract
Reviews definitions and descriptions of hypertext, divided according to type as follows: with dominance of the technical aspects of creation and accessibility; with dominance of the technical possibilities of usage and development by users; with particular attention paid to the intellectual processes of creation and structure; which stress the similarity and interaction of user and hypertext, connected with the use of associative relations. Gives characteristics of hypertext structural elements, basic types and subtypes as well as ways of improving the efficiency of macrotext

The KABA subject headings scheme in the form of an authority file will be the main cataloguing and retrieval tool of the 5 Polish academic libraries cooperating in the automation on the VTLS software platform. The scheme is designed to preserve compatibility between the bibliographic headings authority file and the subject headings authority file. Describes the design anf methodology of the scheme, the types of file entries and porposed lexical categories. KABA subject headings and subheadings are also described

    Abstract
Outlines the history of decimal classification and compares DDC with UDC. DDC has not been used in Poland or in other central and east European countries whereas UDC is widely used in that region. Thus, when making decisions in Poland on which scheme to use in central or cooperative systems, UDC should be preferred

    Abstract
Considers the subject headings allocated by the Polish National Library. Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of utilisation or rejection of these subject headings, as well as some reasons for changes becoming necessary in specific cases or libraries. Examines issues concerning the Polish National Library's Slownik Jezyka Hasel Przedmiotowych (Dictionary of Subject Headings); their rapid increase, its increasing detail and its usage in and applicability to other libraries

    Abstract
Cognitive research into information science started at the International Workshop on the Cognitive viewpoint, Ghent, Belgium, 1977, where it was made clear that the task of research is to improve information flow, specifically through creating models of users' knowledge compatible with the conceptual frameworks used by information retrieval systems. Divides users' knowledge into knowledge of the world, of the information retrieval system, of the task and of the domain. Cognitivism as a research direction in information science explains how the cognitive processes and objects might influence information retrieval and representation

    Abstract
Defines retroconversion as the transferring of bibliographical records from the traditional (card) format to the computer readable one, or the conversion of records on the electronic medium into different formats. Retroconversion can be implemented by: insertion of the data into the electronic medium via the keyboard; taking data from available databases with corrections; or scanning catalogue cards and trasnferring the text into the MARC format. Describes the present state of retroconverison at the following Polish libraries: the Parliament Library; the libraries of Warszaw, Jagiellonian and Gdansk Universities, the National Library, and the Library of the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy
