    Abstract
In the process of transition towards Knowledge Society, development of educated citizens is of prime concern Ihr all nations of the world, The problem becomes acute for those with sizeable population with diversified culture, background and economic condition. Methodologies for provision of education are undergoing a sea change and are in a transitory phase of development with technology acting as an agent for change. It is in this context that a new method of education - Open and Distance Education (ODE) plays a vital role. The various methods followed in ODE system and the initiatives taken in India are discussed here, with particular reference to the role of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

    Abstract
The elements of desirable research design for the evaluation of educational technolgy are discussed with reference to the context of existing research. Sources of internal invalidity, type of compared educational acitivity, and outcome measures are considered. Finally, recommendations regarding the direction of evaluation research are made. Research designs that take into account the characteristics of the learner, the software, and the taecher preferably within the framework of a model of the learning process should be adopted

Describes a project which the library of the Univ. of Sheffield in England completed at the request of the British Library Research and Development Department between 1990 and 1992. The project investigated the application of multimedia in libraries and produced a multimedia demonstrator to train staff in handling the reference interview. Explains how the demonstrator was produced and the factors involved in the cost of multimedia authoring

    Abstract
Traditionally, reference librarians at Tennessee University taught basic library skills through a lecture format. Desiring to communicate more effectively with students, reduce burnout, and alleviate scheduling difficulties, the department decided to develop a computer assisted instruction (CAI) programme for English 102 classes. Discusses the development and implementation of 3 HyperCard modules to help students learn to find periodical articles, use the online catalogue, and search MLA on CD-ROM. Includes reactions from students, English instructors and librarians, and concludes with plans to develop CAI modules for other instructional needs in the future

    Abstract
At the start of the academic year reference staff are hard pressed to provide sufficient assistance to first time users of CD-ROMs, who have missed bibliographic instruction classes, or who need more guidance before searching. The literature on CD-ROMs was reviewed, and a survey conducted to estimate the training needs of searchers. It was found that 100% of the inexperienced searchers required assistance while searching, and 50% of their search strategies were later rated as poor. More than half the experienced searchers also needed the librarians assistance, and 31% of this group demonstrated a poor understanding of searching techniques. The survey findings were incorporated into CDIntro, a computer assisted learning package designed by the authors

    Abstract
Describes the development of a periodicals self help instruction program written in HyperCard for the Macintosh by the Science and Medicine Library of the University of Toronto, Canada. The program explains the general concepts of how to search for article citations in periodical indexes; and how to find locations for periodicals in the online catalogue. Preliminary testing has shown that many people use the program but there has been no discernible impact on the number of periodical questions at the Reference Desk. A more detailed study of user response needs to be undertaken to learn if the tutorial should be revised

    Abstract
Describes End user Courses in Information Access through Communication Technology (EDUCATE), a 3 year project funded by the European Union and designed to meet the needs of scientists, engineers and information specialists. It involves the collaboration of 6 universities and is designed as a multimedia programme which can be used in a variety of ways including self instruction, as part of formal training course, and as a reference and access tool to information sources, and thus far, applicable in 2 subject areas: physics and electrical and electronic engineering

    Abstract
TEPACIS is a computer assisted instruction package on CDS/ISIS which simulates the running of CDS/ISIS by allowing and accepting keyboard input of command codes and data. It is divided into 16 chapters, each presenting background information and guiding the learner to interact with CDS/ISIS in a simulated environment. TEPACIS includes enough background information on database formats, steps ind esigning a database, inverted index files, and so on, to make it useful to those interested in bibliographic databases in general. A second part, dealing with more advanced features of the software, is being developed

    Abstract
Purpose - To evaluate the impact of an interactive online tutorial aiming to improve student citing and referencing practice. Design/methodology/approach - Action research involving three cycles of activity: identification of the most frequently occurring errors made by new undergraduates and postgraduates following instruction in citing and reference practice given in the autumn of 2002; creation of the tutorial for use by the same students in spring 2003, with the quizzes contributing to a portfolio assessment for the undergraduates. Comparison of the students' performance before and after using the tutorial, monitoring through WebCT tracking facilities and usability tests with dyslexic students; adoption of the tutorial as the standard departmental practice, repeating the monitoring activities to compare the results with the previous year. Findings - The results of the first cycle of activity showed a high number of errors, despite the instruction received by students, and the need to start the tutorial at an unanticipated basic level. The students responded positively to the tutorial and some improvements in practice were identified, although the tracking facilities revealed limited use by some undergraduates. Comparison of the errors made in 2003-2004 with those of 2002-2003 showed improvements all round. Research limitations/implications - Some of the improvements may be accounted for by the change of practice part way through the previous academic year and other interventions. Originality/value - The methods used will inform others wishing to carry out and evaluate online learning initiatives. It shows a qualified success in the use of online learning for this purpose.

    Abstract
Workstation sign up records were used to determine use patterns for individuals searching CD-ROM databases in the Biological Sciences Library at Ohio State University between Jan 87 and Jun 91. Data were gathered for the number of database uses, interval between first and last database use, and number of academic quarters in which databases were used. More than half the individuals recorded all use within one month. Over one third recorded use on only one day. Results suggest that the library should emphasize basic point of use instruction for first time searchers and deemphasize workshops
