Content: "Der Mannheimer Brockhaus-Verlag will mit der 21. Ausgabe seines Nachschlagewerkes demnächst die umfassendste Enzyklopädie aller Zeiten vorlegen. Die Zahl der Bände stieg im Vergleich zur Vorgängerausgabe wegen Ergänzungen oder neuer Themen um 6 auf 30 (Gesamtgewicht: 70 Kilogramm). Sie enthalten auf 24.500 Seiten 300.000 Stichwörter sowie mehr als 40 000 Fotos, Bildtafeln, Grafiken und Karten. Der Inhalt wird auch in digitaler Form auf einer kleinen Speichereinheit (USB-Speicherstick) angeboten und kann am Computer aufgerufen werden. In der neuen Ausgabe sei der Bildbereich stark erweitert worden, sagte Projektleiterin Marion Winkenbach. Zudem wurden 600 Quellentexte aufgenommen, etwa ein Zeitzeugenbericht zu Alexander dem Großen. Zu den neuen Themen gehören "Feinstaub", "Esskultur" oder IT-Sicherheit". Die Käufer erhalten zudem zwei DVDs mit 70 Stunden Spielzeit."

"Microsoft greift für den Angriff auf Suchmaschinen-Marktführer Google noch tiefer in die Tasche. Die Ausgaben für das Online-Anzeigengeschäft, das MSN-Portal und neue Suchtechnologien werden im Geschäftsjahr, das im Juli startet, um 60 Prozent auf 1,6 Milliarden Dollar aufgestockt, wie Konzernchef Steve Ballmer ankündigt. Allein 1,1 Milliarden Dollar davon gingen in Forschung und Entwicklung. Microsoft sei im Markt für Online-Suche sehr ernsthaft engagiert, sagt Ballmer. "Nur zwei bis drei Unternehmen können wirklich die Infrastruktur liefern, die mit den Anforderungen der Konsumenten und Anzeigenkunden Schritt halten kann." Derzeit dominiert der weltgrößte Suchmaschinenbetreiber Google diesen Markt mit Abstand. Allein in den USA laufen nach Angaben von Nielsen Net-Rating 49 Prozent aller Suchanfragen über Google. Microsofts MSN Search rangiert derzeit mit knapp elf Prozent an dritter Stelle, noch hinter Yahoo mit gut 22 Prozent der Suchanfragen. Zudem will Microsoft ein bisher noch weitgehend unerschlossenes Geschäftsgebiet besetzen: Werbung in Videospielen. Dazu übernimmt der weltgrößte Softwarekonzern die darauf spezialisierte Firma Massive, bestätigt der für die Spielekonsole Xbox zuständige Microsoft-Manager Robbie Bach. Die in New York ansässige Firma mit derzeit rund 80 Beschäftigten hat Verträge unter anderem mit führenden Spiele-Produzenten wie THQ und Konami."
