    Abstract
NewsAgent for Libraries is one of the projects funded by the eLib programme in the UK. Following a brief historical account of the original ideas behind the project, describes the main stages in developing the project: which aims to create a user configurable electronic news and current awareness service for library and information professionals with a mixture of content streams, including metadata. Users' interests are specified by profiles which are then matched with incoming records so that users are alerted by electronic mail of items of potential interest. Examples of creating profiles and of some of the 'input feeds' in the project are given as well as an example of the use of the Dublic Core metadata format for describing resources covered in NewsAgent

    Abstract
Organizational restructuring at Western Kentucky University's Helm-Cravens Library resulted in the consolidation of the service points of the Science Library, Government Documents, and Reference into one centralized Reference Center. This created an environment of information overload and technostress for reference librarians. To help remedy this situation, a core knowledge for electronic reference services for all reference desk personnel was established and a new training programme was implemented. All staff who serve at the reference desk were surveyed to determine which electronic resources should become part of the core electronic knowledge. The results of this survey are tabulated. Describes the intensive training programme undertaken once the core item list was established. The programme has enbaled all reference librarians to lead patrons to pertinent resources

    Abstract
Purpose - Uncovering faculty members' conceptions of Information Literacy (IL), as well as exploring their perceptions with regard to the importance given to a previously defined set of core IL competences grouped into four categories: searching, evaluation, processing and communication and dissemination. Ascertaining the possible differences among the five knowledge branches (arts and humanities, sciences, social and legal sciences, health sciences, and technical disciplines); and understanding the importance granted to a set of learning improvement initiatives by the faculty. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - The survey was completed by a set of faculty members from the University of Granada (Spain). Data were collected using the IL-HUMASS survey. The research is based on subjective data, first approached from a descriptive point of view. Later, data correlation, analysis and non-parametric tests were used with the goal of finding significant differences of faculty perceptions among the relevant academic areas. Findings - Results suggest that more than half of the surveyed faculty have what the authors define as an Academic Concept of IL. The IL categories of communica\tion and dissemination and searching were graded in significance by the staff as being "very important," while those of evaluation and processing were assigned a slightly lesser rating of "important." Results suggest that IL awareness falls into two broad groups differentiated by subject discipline: those from health sciences, social and legal sciences and arts and humanities representing the first group, and sciences and technical disciplines the other. Research limitations/implications - This approach address the subjective status of faculty concepts in a single university, but also in all knowledge branches. Future research is needed. Originality/value - This is one of the few papers regarding faculty perceptions of IL.

    Abstract
Free Nets are community access networks most of which are available on the Internet. Librarians are at the core of these networks. Gives examples of how they participate in this movement. Describes some Canadian Free Nets. Free Nets are analogous to the role of free public libraries in the development of literacy as they are a grass roots, democratic response to the opportunities presented by computer technology and telecommunications. Lists library services on Internet accessible Free Nets and civic networks

    Abstract
Declining levels of financial support for public institutions, particularly colleges and universities, have resulted in reduced staffing in academic libraries. Concurrently, libraries are besieged with greater demands from the academic community for access to and instruction in electronic information resources such as the Internet. Discusses the emerging organizational structures of academic libraries, then identifies and dicusses core competencies for academic reference librarians. These include a flexible attitude and approach towards technology, a high tolerance for rapid change in technology, creativity, curiosity, communication skills, public relations savvy, and the ability to effectively relate to a diverse clientele

    Abstract
The sheer power and scope of Internet information services are opening the public's eye to the volume of information available in a way that traditional library service points have never quite managed. In addition to basic core competencies, today's reference librarians must be committed to providing superior public service to library clientele and that committment must be immediately apparent to each user

    Abstract
In the past, librarians were the 'information chauffeurs' who, when requested, performed mediated searches and pointed the client towards various information resources. The advent of information utilities and newly developed technologies such as intelligent agents, the Internet, and America Online enable customers to obtain information on their own and are thus challenging librarians to define their core services and roles. Looks at reference services and their growing significance

    Abstract
Descusses the technology issues that arose in the process of implementing the Integrated Information Cenre (IIC) at the University of Minnesota. Briefly describes the IIC's idealized concept of integrated information services was developed to guide technological developments and decisions. Discusses complicating issues of integrating, changing and organizing diverse technologies that formed the core of the IIC's implementing activities. Reviews the services actually offered using an integrative approach to technology

    Abstract
Examines the information seeking practices and strategies used by interdisciplinary scientists as they work in 'boundaries' between disciplines. As researchers gather and disseminate information outside their core knowledge domains through personal networks, conferences and the literature, they interact with objects, methods, people and words. Much of their information work is devoted to probing and learning new subject areas and they often rely on intermediaries to help collect and translate materials from unfamiliar subjects. Libraries that wish to facilitate cross disciplinary enquiry will need to design information environments that support learning, provide tools that function as 'boundary objects' and offer intermediary services that assist in the transfer and translation of information across scientific communities
