- Abstract
- Presents a theoretical model of messages and communication processes. Describes a way to create optimal persuasive messages from natural language texts. The model avoids the limitations of categorical content analysis, both manual and computerized. Network analysis provides a relational paradigm for statistically based message research. Illustrates applications of word-network theory and method to different problems using examples

- Abstract
- Describes a study of the use of electronic networks by scientists and engineers. The study of network use was conducted in order to make policy recommendations for the proposed Natioanl Research and Education Network (NREN) and combines traditional social science empirical methods with policy analysis. Argues that qualitative techniwues, such as semi-structured interviews and focus groups, provide data important to the development of user-based policies and that social and behavioural issues must be given more attention ny network policy makers

- Abstract
- Examines the use of networked information sources in scholarly communication. Networked information sources are defined broadly to cover: documents and images stored on electronic network hosts; data files; newsgroups; listservs; online information services and electronic periodicals. Reports results of a survey to determine how heavily, if at all, networked information sources are cited in scholarly printed periodicals published in 1993 and 1994. 27 printed periodicals, representing a wide range of subjects and the most influential periodicals in their fields, were identified through the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. 97 articles were selected for further review and references, footnotes and bibliographies were checked for references to networked information sources. Only 2 articles were found to contain such references. Concludes that, although networked information sources facilitate scholars' work to a great extent during the research process, scholars have yet to incorporate such sources in the bibliographies of their published articles

- Abstract
- This article has three goals. It begins by reviewing the current state of the Internet as a data transport system and some of its emerging problems. Then it discusses 2 major research initiatives - Internet 2 and the Next Generation Internet (NGI) program - and some of the new network-level services that may first see substantial deployment in these new research testbeds. The article concludes with a few speculations about future changes to the Internet as a data transport system

- Abstract
- This book coherently documents the results and experiences of a major digital library pilot effort, the MeDoc project (Multimedia Electronic Documents). This two-year project was initiated by the German Informatics Society (GI) and involved authors, publishers, librarians, and computer science departments. The prototype distributed digital library system developed during the initiative was operated in a nationwide trial for several months. The book presents the technical and operational results achieved during the project as well as input from foreign digital library acftivities. Besides professionals active in the area of digital library research and design, this book addresses librarians and other enganged in scientific publishing

- Abstract
- A national multi-gigabyte-per-second research and education network known as the NREN is to be established by 1996, according to the High Performance Computing Act of 1991 passed in Dec 1991. NREN, referred to as the information highway is expected to provide scientific, educational, and economic benefits for the US, and to serve as the basis for an all-encompassing National Information Infrastructure available to all citizens. An annotated bibliography presenting a representation of the literature that provides a history of the NREN as well as a sense of the evolving concerns and visions of this exciting revolution of the Information Age. Includes items that offer general and specific background information, and visions, viewpoints, and issues related to the NREN

- Abstract
- The primary objective of the present study was to exmine whether readers conducting bibliographic searches in ALEPH - Israel's research library network - tend to search only within the OPAC of the library within which they are working or whether they access the remote OPACs of other libraries. The ALEPH network has a dezentralized database. Therefore, it was possible to examine this question because each library has its own access code and each database can be searched separately. The data were collected by means of a one-page questionnaire lefr beside each terminal in the library of the Graduate School of Library and Archive Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during an entire academic years. results of analysis of the data collected in this survey are presented in 6 tables

- Abstract
- Computer networking is an emerging form of communication which is having major societal and cultural impacts. We first focus on BITNET and INTERNET, which are parts of a worldwide computer network for researchers, academicians, and information professionals. Discusses the services and resources that are available on the network, describes ways that these services can be accessed and used, and suggests derictions for research that may be significant in understanding the impacts that computer mediated communication will have on social interaction, oprganisational structure and culture
