    Abstract
Developments such as SGML have led to predictions that catalogues will become unnecessary: in future cataloguing data will be extracted from documents at the printing stage. But such scenarios require closer examination. Early experiments raise doubts about precision and reliability, while the current trend is for quality and standardisation of records rather than sheer quantity

    Abstract
Considers some of the human factors in online interaction and Internet use. Discusses the following: users' need for help from libraries and librarians, given the difficulties people continue to have in accessing and using networked information; the challenge of user demands for speedy delivery of information and documents; the trend towards 'humanizing the net' through chat rooms and social agent interfaces (such as Microsoft's Bob); and the problems for libraries of users using the Internet for trivial or pornographic purposes

    Abstract
Discusses some of the distance learning programmes of Internet College, a new educational trend that has begun to have an impact on the services and resources provided by an increasing number of institutions of higher learning in the USA. Describes the benefits and drawbacks of online education and what it means in terms of staffing for the future

    Abstract
For about 10 years, systems such as STATUS, CAIRS and INMAGIC have offered the ability to search for any word in a collection of unstructured text. Until recently, only librarians and documentalists have been interested, but free text retrieval is increasingly valued in the business world in general and all 3 systems are striving for a wider market by adding other features to their established core competence. Illustrates this trend with particualr reference to: STATUS/IQ; CAIRS; TMS and DB/TextWorks (the successor to InMagic Plus)

    Abstract
Corporations offering a Web site have a perspective different to that of an online searcher: they aim to embed the information content within processes and algorithms of an interactive character that create a customer or add value to an existing customer. Explains the indexing techniques they use and how searchers can cope with this trend

    Abstract
The recent trend in reducing professional and training staff in cataloguing departments means that in the long term users will have to spend more time trying to retrieve the library's materials. Reasserts the importance of cataloguing. Discusses the importance of cataloguing to local control of the database, maintaining shelf order and subject control, cataloguing the Internet, database design and user training

    Abstract
Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Abstract
State of the art review of the trend towards library and information science professionals becoming deeply involved in the process of knowledge engineering: knowledge engineers being those who build expert systems, or knowledge based systems that emulate the performance of human experts in particular tasks or domains. Shows how library and information science professionals have fared as knowledge engineers and how their involvement relates to the perception of library and information science professionals as knowledge engineers. Discusses the tools and techniques of knowledge engineering as they have been applied to the library and information science domain, and looks at the involvement of library and information science professionals in knowledge engineering outside library and information science

    Abstract
The days of the traditional abstracting and indexing services are waning, as abstracts and bibliographic data become commodities. However, there are tremedous opportunities for those organizations willing to look beyond the status quo to the new possibilities enabled by the latest wave of advanced technologies. Those who own content need to focus on the delivery mechanisms and new markets that technology can provide. Features like automatic extraction of key concepts or names, collaborative filtering to help with trend analysis, and visualization techniques can take information past the retrieval stage and into the management area

    Abstract
Considers the recent trend towards the promotion, by public libraries, of literary fiction with particular reference to a new fiction initiative by the British Library which seeks to redress the imbalance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. From January 1997, the BNB catalogue records for works of fiction will be indexed using the LCSH in conjunction with a range of genre and form headings derived from the American Library Association' Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works on Fiction, Drama etc. (GSAFD). Access provided by the GSAFD approach encompass access by genre and access by subject

    Abstract
Points to the trends in libraries and information services to shift away from the use of long established online hosts (such as DIALOG and STN) towards the use of CD-ROMs and direct access services, such as BIDS, Janet and CHEST, Illustrates the trend with statistics of host based MEDLINE searches conducted at the Barnes Library, Birmingham University; which show a decline from 526 searches in 1991/92 to 22 searches in 1995/96. Describes the process undertaken within the Information Services, Birminghampton University, to define a policy for the possible continuation of their mediated online searching service. Reports results of a questionnaire survey of other UK higher education institutions which confirmed their own feelings that the provision of such services was in decline, due largely to the shift towards end user access. With the increasing availability of nationally site licensed databases and locally available CD-ROMs, it is likely the researchers will ignore other commercial information services

    Abstract
Anglo-American codes are examined to determine the implicit or acting concept of work in each, in order to trace the development of our current implicit concept of work, as embodied in AACR2R. The following conditions are examined, using comparison tables. (1) same work with different appendages (illustrated works, music with text, texts with commentary and/or biographical/critical material, scholia); (2) separately published parts of a work produced by the exercise of several different functions; (3) appendages to a work published separately (commentaries without text, concordances, continuations, indexes, sequels, supplements); (4) change in title of a work. A trend away from the collocation of the editions of a work called for by the second objective of the catalog is identified. It is suggested that this tendency stems from failure to take advantage of newer technologies for building catalogs
