    Abstract
    Erst ganz am Ende seines monumentalen Romans »Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit« lässt Marcel Proust sein Alter Ego den Entschluss fassen, eben dieses Werk der Erinnerung in Angriff zu nehmen. Der Autor im Buch wird also beginnen, just das Buch zu schreiben, das wir Leser einige Seiten weiter bedauernd zuklappen werden - eine schöne selbstbezügliche Schleife. Auf diesen allerletzten Seiten überlegt Proust, was den Autor daran hindern könnte, seine Recherche zu vollenden. Er könnte zu früh sterben, oder ein Schlaganfall könnte ihn der Sprache berauben. Vielleicht endet er »genauso wie diejenigen, die am stärksten überzeugt sind, dass ihre Zeit abgelaufen ist, sich dennoch leicht überreden lassen, ihre Unfähigkeit, gewisse Wörter auszusprechen, habe nichts mit einem Schlaganfall, mit Aphasie zu tun, sondern müsse von einer Ermüdung der Zunge, einem der Stottern ähnlichen Nervenzustand oder der auf eine Verdauungsstörung folgenden Erschöpfung herrühren.« Das Wissen um den Zusammenhang zwischen Hirnläsionen unc Sprachstörungen war um 1900 noch relativ neu, doch Marcel Proust war darüber durch seinen Vater, einen prominenten Nervenarzt, bestens informiert. Damals boten die unterschiedlichen Störungsbilder der Aphasie, hervorgerufen durch Hirnschlag oder Kopfverletzung, die einzige Chance, den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Gehirn zu erforschen. Erst mit der Elektroenzephalografie (EEG) und modernen bildgebenden Verfahren lässt sich der Zusammenhang zwischen Hirntätigkeit und Sprache detailliert untersuchen. Ein Star der Forschung auf diesem Gebiet ist Angela Friederici. Sie personifiziert durch ihren Werdegang - von Germanistik über Psychologie zu Neurologie - den Brückenschlag zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaft, ohne den heute kein tieferes Verständnis von Sprache möglich ist. Das Medium, in dem wir sprechen und lesen, denken und dichten, mailen und twittern, ist ein spezifisch menschliches Natur- und Kulturprodukt komplex verschalteter Neuronen- bündel. Es bereitete mir großes Vergnügen, zu sehen, wie in den Augen von Frau Friederici, während wir uns mit der Sprache über die Sprache unterhielten, immer dann, wenn von der Aussicht neue Erkenntnisse die Rede war, die pure Forscherlust aufblitzte.
