- Die Diskussion über Arbeit reduziert sich nicht nur auf das gravierende Problem Erwerbslosigkeit, es werden auch immer wieder Möglichkeiten für eine humanere Gestaltung der Produktionsabläufe erörtert. Der Autor untersucht in dem Buch 'Naturwissenschaftliche Weltbilder in Managementtheorien' (Campus Verlag), welche geistesgeschichtlichen Einflüsse die Arbeitsorganisation über die Jahrhunderte geprägt haben. Die mechanistische Weltsicht der klassischen Naturwissenschaften beeinflußte demnach das tayloristische Rationalisierungsmodell, während jüngere Managementmodelle Verbindungen zu neueren Theorien wie Selbstorganisation und Chaostheorie aufweisen

- Abstract
- Der schriftliche Output der Naturwissenschaften verdoppelt sich etwa alle 10 Jahre. Dieses quantitative Wachstum bedeutet, daß die Wissenschaft bei Beibehalten der derzeitigen Informationsverarbeitung und -speicherung in absehbarer Zeit an ihrer eigenen Produktivität ersticken wird: einerseits wird man die Mengen an Papier nicht mehr lagern können und andererseits wird man auch nicht mehr darin suchen und etwas finden können. Ein Ansatz zur Bewältigung dieses Dilemmas zwischen wachsender Produktivität und Verfügbarkeit liegt im Einsatz von modernen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (IKT). - Abstract
- Die Entwicklung des deutschen Fernsprechbuches, das erstmals 1881 in Berlin als blaues Oktavheft mit 94 Eintragungen erschien, ist Thema dieser Arbeit. Schwerpunkt bildet die Analyse der zwischen 1901 und 1941/42 von der Oberpostdirektion Frankfurt herausgegebenen Fernsprechbücher. Durch Hinzuziehung der Sekundärliteratur wird jedoch immer der Bogen zur allgemeinen Telefonbuchentwicklung in Deutschland gespannt. Die Entwicklung von 1945 bis 1990 wurde im wesentlichen anhand der Sekundärliteratur verfolgt. Bestimmender Faktor für die Fernsprechbuchentwicklung war die fast kontinuierlich steigende Zahl der Fernsprechanschlüsse und die damit einhergehende Zunahme der zu verzeichnenden Teilnehmer. Welche Maßnahme im einzelnen ergriffen wurden, um das Fernsprechnbuch weiterhin in handlichem Format und zweckmäßiger Typographie und Anlage herausgeben zu können, wird ausführlich dargestellt. Untersucht wurde außerdem, inwieweit die Fernsprechbuchasugaben allgemeine Entwicklungen im Fernsprechwesen sowie politisches, wirtschaftliches und kulturell-gesellschaftliches Geschenen widerspiegeln

- "Die beiden Verfasser stellen die wechselvolle Geschichte der ersten mit Erscheinungsjahr 1930 beginnenden und 1944 vollständig zerstörten Schlagwortkataloges und des nach 1945 neu begonnenen und Ende 1989 zugunsten der Schlagwortkatalogisierung im Verbund abgebrochenen Kataloges dar. Akribisches Aktenstudium mit zahlreichen Quellenhinweisen, Bezug auf die jeweilige zeitgenössische Sachkatalogdiskussion und ide Einbeziehung der Aussagen von Zeitzeugen ergeben ein lebendiges Bild von der Entwicklung dieses Sachkataloges und dem Einfluß und der Arbeit der beteiligten Bibliothekare einschließlich der Entscheidungen Hartwig Lohses. - Abstract
- Die formale Analyse von Dokumenten ist seit alters her eine der Hauptaufgaben der Bibliotheken und Archive, in neuerer Zeit auch der Dokumentationsstellen. Die gesammelten und ausgewerteten Dokumente müssen identifizierbar und wieder auffindbar sein. Die formale Analyse bietet die Möglichkeit, die formalen Charakteristika von Dokumenten zu beschreiben. Damit können die Dokumente unter mehreren, aber immer den formal gleichen Such- und Ordnungsmerkmalen in Katalogen, Datenbanken, Bibliographien o.ä. nachgewiesen werden. Hierzu werden nach festgelegten Regeln die verschiedenen formalen Charakteristika zu "Auswertungselementen" zusammengefaßt, die jeweils eine sinnvoll nicht weiter zu unterteilende Klasse zusammengehöriger Charakteristika bilden (z.B. ist ein Datum, bestehend aus Tag, Monat, Jahr nicht weiter zu unterteilen und bildet deshalb ein Auswertungselement). Alle bei der formalen Analyse ermittelten Auswertungselemente für die Beschreibung eines Dokumentes werden in festgelegter Form und Reihenfolge niedergeschrieben. Aus der vollständigen Menge von Auswertungselementen wird nur ein bestimmter Teil als Ordnungs- oder Suchmerkmale ausgewählt. Das Ergebnis der formalen Analyse wird gemeinhin "Titelaufnahme" oder "Fundstelle" oder "Zitat" genannt.

- Abstract
- Am Beispiel der Zentralbibliothek der Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH wird der Paradigmenwechsel bibliographischer Alltagsroutine zwischen 1978 und 1998 vorgestellt. Vor dem Hintergrund der veränderten Informationstechnologie der letzten 20 Jahre werden einerseits die eingesetzten Nachweisinstrumente und deren Evolution beschrieben, andererseits die Veränderungen der konkreten Arbeitsprozesse beim Bibliographieren illustriert. Dabei wird ein Spektrum abgedeckt, das von gedruckten Bibliographien und Referateblättern über Mikrofiche und Magnetbänder, Online- und CD-ROM-Datenbanken bis zum "WeltWideWeb" reicht. Wir zeigen, daß der bibliographische Arbeitsprozeß neu definiert werden muß, in seiner Grundfunktion aber nicht obsolet geworden ist

- Abstract
- Daß Bits die kleinste Einheit der Information sind, kann als allgemein bekannt vorausgesetzt werden, daß man aber damit nicht unbedingt die Speicherform der Computer verwechseln darf, ist schon weniger bekannt. So kann man immer wieder den Trugschluß beobachten, daß Bits lediglich die Informationsmenge in elektronischen Systemen beschreiben, aber beispielsweise nicht in geistigen Werken oder die des Wissens. Dies wäre jedoch ebenso, als wenn man behaupten würde, daß sich zwar die Länge zwischen zwei Punkten in Metern bestimmen ließe, nicht aber die eines Menschen. Es ist daher wichtig, deutlich zu machen, daß wissenschaftliche Literatur über weite Strecken Wissen als eine Form kompakter, also begründeter Information enthält und daß der Mensch in Poppers Welt 3 damit ein Optimum im Verhältnis von Information und Redundanz anstrebt. Redundanz ist nicht nur für die Sicherung der Information von bedeutung, sondern ist auch für die Entstehung neuer Information unabdingbar. Wir müssen auch klarer zwischen Information und Interpretation unterscheiden. Die Interpretationstheorie kann bekanntlich in der Semiotik auf eine lange Entstehungsgeschichte zurückblicken. Informationswissenschaft stellt sich bei näherer Betrachtung als das bislang fehlende, allumfassende Bindeglied zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften heraus und das Bit als Grundeinheit der Veränderlichkeit an sich. Informationswissenschaft benötigt mehr denn je eine solide Grundlage in der Ausbildung
