    Abstract
    Das Informationsangebot in der Chemie ist, im Unterschied etwa zur Biologie, fast völlig von kommerziellen Anbietern dominiert, deren elektronische Produkte vor allem einen zahlungskräftigen Industriemarkt bedienen. Das ist eine für Hochschulen problematische Situation, trotz zahl reicher "academic programs" für solche Datenbanken. Die Produzenten haben in den letzten Jah ren u.a. durch Erweiterung der inhaltlichen Erfassung, Erwerb weiterer Datenbanken und Optimierung ihrer Benutzeroberflächen für Endnutzer versucht, ihre Marktanteile zu vergrössern. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht eine oder zwei dieser kostspieligen, umfangreichen Quellen für Endnutzer die wesentlichen Bedürfnisse im Bereich Sekundär/Tertiärliteratur abdecken kann. Aufgrund unserer langjährigen Rechercheerfahrung und von Datenbankvergleichen müssen wir diese Frage leider verneinen.

    Abstract
    Zu den Neuerungen des Multimedia-Lexikons gehört vor allem die Verdoppelung der Artikelanzahl. Den jetzt 240 000 Lexikoneinträgen entsprechen aber nur 17 Millionen Wörter. Damit ist die Informationstiefe geringer als bei Microsofts Encarta 2004 Pro, das mit 50 000 Einträgen zwar weniger Artikel, aber umfassendere Informationen enthält (über 19 Millionen Wörter). Recherche-Ergebnisse lassen sich in Mappen als Backup speichern und als HTML-Report exportieren. Dies ist beim Brockhaus etwas unübersichtlicher gelöst als bei Encarta. Informationen und zusätzliche Inhalte macht der Brockhaus dennoch gut zugänglich. Praktisch ist die automatische Kontextkarte, die verwandte Themen aufzeigt. Weitere Extras sind der umfassende Atlas, ein Englisch-Wörterbuch, Länderstatistiken, ein Wissensquiz sowie acht kompakte Einführungen etwa in Biologie, Deutsch und Informatik für Schüler. Gute multimediale Inhalte sind über die Medienbibliothek direkt abrufbar. Bestnoten verdient die detaillierte Installationsroutine, der übersichtliche CD-Manager und die Direktsuche aus Windows-Applikationen heraus. Online-Updates sind bis Dezember 2004 kostenlos. FAZIT: Der Brockhaus erweist sich auch digital als zuverlässiges Lexikon mit interessanten Extras. Verbesserungswürdig sind allerdings Informationstiefe und Recherche-Reports.

    "Ganz eingebettet in die Webseitenoptik, die bei der Encarta 2006 eingeführt wurde, präsentieren sich die Inhalte der umfangreichen und meist recht gut recherchierten Artikel der Enzyklopädie. Neu hinzugekommen ist die Startseite, die über einen Button in der Navigationsleiste jederzeit aufgerufen werden kann. Darüber lassen sich Themenbereiche wie Biologie, Sprache und Literatur oder etwa Religion und Philosophie direkt ansteuern. Je nach gewähltem Interessensgebiet können Wissbegierige hier ausgiebig herumstöbern. Dabei entdecken sie nicht nur spannende Inhalte, sondern auch animierte PanoramaBilder, die zur virtuellen Reise etwa nach Pompeji oder Jerusalem einladen. Einen anderen ebenfalls recht spannenden Zugang zu den Inhalten der Enzyklopädie bietet der so genannte Wissenskompass. Über eine animierte Navigationsleiste sind dabei Artikel zu ausgewählten Themengebiet zugänglich. Wer gezielt Informationen sucht, tippt den Suchbegriff ein und erkennt an der angebotenen Ergebnisliste, sowohl die Gewichtung, als auch die Art der Fundstelle. Ob es sich also um einen Artikel aus der Enzyklopädie oder um einen Weblink handelt, ist sofort sichtbar.
    An den Inhalten, an der Struktur und an der Verlinkung der Artikel im Lexikon selbst, bleibt wenig auszusetzen. Zu bemängeln ist aber die Aktualität. Zwar wird Encarta via Internet aktualisiert. Doch macht sich dies leider nicht bei allen Artikeln bemerkbar. Dass nicht aufgeführt wird, wer im letzten Jahr den Nobelpreis für Physik gewonnen hat, mag noch verzeihlich sein, dass aber über den verheerenden Hurrikan Katrina nicht mehr als ein Bild und eine kurze Nachricht auftauchen, ist durchaus bedenklich und spricht nicht unbedingt für die Aktualität des Nachschlagewerks. Auch die Anzahl der Weblinks könnte bei manch einem Thema großzügiger ausfallen. Meist gibt es genau einen Link zu einem Thema. Wenn anschließend die Websuche über MSN zu einem Eintrag zum Internetlexikon Wikipedia führt, darf man ruhig schmunzeln. Enthalten in der Encarta ist ein englischdeutsches Wörterbuch, ein interaktiver Atlas sowie Discovery-Channel-Videos. Diese widmen sich sowohl Naturereignissen als auch Phänomenen aus Geo- und Naturwissenschaften. Außerdem umfasst Microsofts WissensDVD mit "Encarta Kids" die gelungene Enzyklopädie für Kinder. Über eine bunte Zugangsseite stöbern Kinder in eigens für sie aufbereiteten Inhalten. FAZIT: Eintauchen und herumstöbern in Microsofts Encarta 2007 ist interessant und macht Spaß.     Abstract
    Die Präsentation der bibliographischen Datenbank Scopus durch Elsevier im Jahre 2004 in direktem Mitbewerb zum bisher unangefochtenen Marktführer Web of Science (WoS) von Thomson Scientific hat bereits nach kurzer Zeit bei Bibliothekar(inn)en und Endnutzer(inne)n für rege Diskussionen gesorgt; für immer mehr wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken stellte sich bald die Frage eines möglichen Ersatzes des WoS durch Scopus, da aus budgetären Gründen ein paralleler Ankauf meist nicht möglich ist. Viele Diskussionsveranstaltungen, (Firmen-)Präsentationen, Expert(inn)entreffen und Übersichtsarbeiten widmen sich inzwischen den jeweiligen fachlichen, inhaltlichen, geografischen oder bibliometrischen Vor- und Nachteilen dieser Datenbanken (Siehe Kapitelliteratur). Umso erstaunlicher erscheint aber, dass die Datenaktualität bisher nur relativ wenig Beachtung fand, ist doch gerade in den Lebenswissenschaften ("Life Sciences") dieses Kriterium von höchster Wichtigkeit. Hier präsentieren wir daher das Ergebnis einer kleinen Untersuchung, in der wir an 45 für die Pharmazie und Chemie relevanten Fachzeitschriften verglichen, welches Heft das jeweils aktuellste in der Datenbank indexierte ist. Wir ergänzten dazu die beiden fachübergreifenden Datenbanken Scopus und WoS um die fachspezifische Datenbank SciFinder (Scholar) der Chemical Abstract Services (CAS), die nicht nur eine der wichtigsten Informationsquellen für alle Fragen der Chemie (Strukturen, Reaktionen, Literatur, etc.) darstellt, sondern auch fürangrenzende Disziplinen wie Pharmazie, Biologie, Materialwissenschaften und Physik von höchstem Interesse ist. Dies belegen die 27 Millionen derzeit indexierten Patente und Zeitschriftenartikel aus den unterschiedlichsten naturwissenschaftlichen Bereichen.
    Bei der Auswahl der Zeitschriften strebten wir ein möglichst breites, aber dennoch repräsentatives Portfolio in Bezug auf Verlag, Impaktfaktor, Artikelanzahl pro Heft, etc. an: von "Angewandte Chemie International Edition" bis "Die Pharmazie", von "Planta Medica" bis "European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry", von ,,Tetrahedron Letters" bis zu "British Journal of Pharmacology". Wichtige deutschsprachige Zeitschriften (z. B. "Scientia Pharmaceutica", "Deutsche Apothekerzeitung") wurden zwar ebenfalls untersucht, konnten jedoch wegen der fehlenden Indexierung im WoS nicht ausgewertet werden. Am Stichtag 12. Februar 2007 wurde für die in allen 3 Datenbanken enthaltenen 45 Zeitschriften nach dem jeweils neuesten Heft gesucht und zusätzlich das an diesem Tag aktuell veröffentlichte Heft ermittelt.

    Abstract
    Früh beginnt der Enzyklopädien-Herbst. Die 2006er Scheiben von Microsoft Encarta und Encyclopaedia Britannica 2006 erreichten uns im August, in dem wir zudem ausgiebig in der elektronischen Version der 21. Auflage des Brockhaus-Wissensmassivs stöbern konnten. Dieses ist Mitte November in Form eines Ein-Gigabyte-USB-Sticks lieferbar, der den gesamten Textbestand der 30 gedruckten Bände enthält und mit Zusatzmaterial aus der Brockhaus-Bibliothek angereichert ist. Zwei auf Festplatte kopierbare Multimedia-DVDs ergänzen ihn. In dieser Klasse der Edelauskunfteien sieht sich die Internet-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia mitmischen, die zwar laufend aktualisiert wird, ohne Internetzugang aber ebenfalls als CD greifbar ist. Damit nicht genug im Enzyklopädienland, hat doch die deutsch-rumänische Crew des Berliner Digitalisierungsspezialisten Direktmedia mit "Meyers Konversationslexikon" von 1906 und "Pierer's Universal-Lexikon" (1857 bis 1865) zwei grandiose historische Enzyklopädien zu einem Spottpreis als Faksimile und mittels Software durchsuchbarem Text auf DVD gebrannt. Mehr Wissen für weniger Geld war nie. Jedes dieser Nachschlagewerke ist empfehlenswert, und fast alle haben sie ihre Stärken wie Schwächen, die mit ihrer Entstehung sowie der Geschichte ihrer Herausgeber und deren Investitionsbereitschaft zusammenhängen.     "Da sich das Quantum an Wissen ganz allgemein ziemlich schnell vergroessert, kann man als Einzelner nur einen winzigen, immer kleiner werdenden Bruchteil, das eben, was für einen persönlich am relevantesten ist, im Gedächtnis behalten. Dabei kann man einerseits ziemlich sicher sein, daß fast alles Wissen schon einmal schriftlich niedergelegt, katalogisiert und auf verschiedendste Weise eingeordnet und ausgewertet wurde. Andererseits ist die Suche oft ziemlich mühsam. Wer ein mehrbändiges Lexikon sein eigen nennt und dort fröhlich von einem zum anderen Band und zurück verwiesen wird, weiß, was ich meine - vom mühseligen Blättern ganz zu schweigen

    Abstract
    Bis heute findet sich der Name des französischen Gelehrten und Mathematikers Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert in vielen Geschichtsbüchern. Das hat vor allem einen Grund: Gemeinsam mit dem Philosophen Denis Diderot gab d'Alembert eines der wichtigsten Werke der Aufklärung heraus. Dessen etwas ausladender Titel lautet: »Enzyklopädie oder ein durchdachtes Wörterbuch der Wissenschaften, Künste und Handwerke«. Ziel der Herausgeber war es, »ein allgemeines Bild der Anstrengungen des menschlichen Geistes auf allen Gebieten und in allen Jahrhunderten zu entwerfen«. An der Abfassung der mehr als 70 000 Enzyklopädie-Artikel beteiligte sich fast die gesamte geistige Elite Frankreichs, darunter Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire und Montesquieu. Der erste Band erschien 1751 und enthielt ein viel beachtetes Vorwort von d'Alembert, der gelegentlich erklärte: Das Wissen der Menschheit stamme nicht von einem Monarchen oder aus Rom, sondern vom individuellen Sinn und Verstand. Erwartungsgemäß stand der französische König Ludwig XV. dem Werk ebenso ablehnend gegenüber wie Papst Clemens XIII., der die Enzyklopädie 1759 auf den Index der verbotenen Bücher setzen ließ. Doch alle Versuche, den Fortgang des Projekts zu verhindern, scheiterten. Zuletzt umfasste das aufklärerische Mammutwerk 35 Bände; den Schluss bildete 1780 ein zweibändiges Register.

    "Der Musiker und Produzent Dieter Bohlen wurde als Dieter Günther Bohlen am 7. Februar 1954 in Oldenburg geboren. Die Ruine Steinschloss ist die höchstgelegene Burg-Ruine in der österreichischen Steiermark. Dieses und anderes Wissen bietet die Online-Enzyklopädie www.wikipedia.de. Das besondere daran: Die mehr als 100.000 deutschsprachigen Artikel stammen nicht aus einer Lexikon-Redaktion. Denn jeder kann bei Wikipedia mitarbeiten. Tausende Autoren schreiben und recherchieren an der Wissensdatenbank - ohne Lohn und mit dem Ziel, irgendwann einmal mit dem Brockhaus konkurrieren zu können. Dabei sind die Texte mit Quellenangabe frei verfügbar. Knapp 500 Artikel kommen nach Angaben des Projektsprechers Arne Klempert täglich neu hinzu. "Die Qualität ist dabei sehr unterschiedlich, sagt Klempert. Manchmal handelt es sich um Einzeiler, die gerade noch so als Artikel durchgehen." Andererseits gebe es aber auch eine Reihe exzellenter Beiträge. - Jeder kann jeden Text verbessern - Die Wikipedianer, so nennen sich die Aktiven bei Wikipedia selbst, verfahren mit den Texten anarchisch: Jeder kann jeden Text verbessern, Passagen hinzufügen oder löschen. Da ist Vandalismus Tür und Tor geöffnet, möchte man meinen. Doch die Störer verlieren bei der Online-Enzyklopädie schnell die Lust, sagt Klempert. Alle Versionen eines Artikels sind jederzeit abrufbar, nichts geht für immer verloren. Rund 4000 registrierte und ungezählte nicht-registrierte Autoren hüten den Wissensschatz Wikipedia und stellen ihre eigenen Kenntnisse zur Verfügung, um das Lexikon weiterzuentwickeln. Viele haben Spaß daran, ihr Wissen zu teilen und durch die Verbesserungen der anderen Autoren lernt man selbst wieder etwas dazu", beschreibt Klempert das Motiv, ein Wikipedianer zu sein. Die Idee zu Wikipedia hatte der US-Amerikaner Jimmy Wales. Im Januar 2001 startete zunächst eine englischsprachige Version der Online-Enzyklopädie, bereits im Mai des gleichen Jahres entstand die deutsche Ausgabe. Unterdessen List die Online-Enzyklopädie in rund 80 Sprachen verfügbar, darunter Esperanto und Plattdeutsch. Die englische Version ist derzeit die größte, gefolgt von der deutschen Wikipedia. Die Serverfarm in Florida wird von Wales' Stiftung Wikimedia getragen. Der Brockhaus-Verlag, der im kommenden Jahr 200 Jahre alt wird, sieht die Konkurrenz aus dem Internet gelassen. Brockhaus-Sprecher Klaus Holoch glaubt nicht, dass Wikipedia einmal den Brockhaus ersetzen kann. "Die Brockhaus-Enzyklopädie bietet geprüftes Wissen, auf das man sich hundertprozentig verlassen kann.""
