- Zum Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts waren es die Physiker, die das naturwissenschaftliche Weltbild revolutionierten. Heute sind es die Biologen, die unser Verständnis der Erkenntnis- und Lebensprozesse radikal verwandeln: Sie ergründen das Geheimnis des Bewusstseins und zeigen, dass der Beobachter und das Beobachtete, das Subjekt und das Objekt, im Akt des Erkennens unauflösbar miteinander verbunden sind. Die Welt, in der wir leben, ist nicht unabhängig von uns; wir bringen sie buchstäblich selbst hervor. Zu den Protagonisten dieses neuen Denkens in der Naturwissenschaft gehört der international anerkannte Neurobiologe und Systemtheoretiker Humberto R. Maturana, den der Kommunikationswissenschaftler Bernhard Pörksen in wochenlangen Gesprächen befragt hat. Gemeinsam erkunden sie in diesem Buch die Grenzen unseres Erkenntnisvermögens, diskutieren die Wahrheit der Wahrnehmung und die Biologie der Liebe und entwerfen - konkret, anschaulich und fabulierlustig - eine Anleitung zum systemischen Denken.

- Als "erfrischend lesbares Buch" würdigt Rezensent Peter Bexte den Band "Vom Sein zum Tun", in dem Humberto R. Maturana seine eigene Theorie im Gespräch mit Bernhard Pörksen erläutert. Der mit seiner Theorie lebender Systeme berühmt gewordene Biologe beantwortet zur Freude Bextes "engagiert" alle Fragen, die ihm Pörksen zur Biologie des Erkennens stellt. Etwa: Was nehmen Tauben im Flug wahr? Wie beobachten Menschen einander? Warum sieht niemand sich selbst von außen? Wie kann man Wahrheit und Illusion unterscheiden? Bexte hebt hervor, in welch hohem Maße Maturana von Anfang an ethische Reflexionen beschäftigten. Sein Nachdenken über die Biologie des Erkennens habe ihn auf eine Ethik der Verantwortung geführt. Wenn nämlich interne Strukturen über die Wahrnehmung entschieden, könne niemand sich hinter angeblich objektiven Wahrheiten verstecken. - Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

- Abstract
- Obwohl der Informationsbegriff in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zunehmend als Schl?sselbegriff zur Erklärung gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen herangezogen wird, ist das breite Spektrum wissenschaftlicher Informationsbegriffe bisher kaum fachübergreifend analysiert worden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird daher der Wandel des Informationsbegriffs in den acht Disziplinen Physik, Biologie, Kybernetik, Informatik, Ökonomie, Soziologie, Psychologie und Philosophie nachvollzogen und auf verallgemeinerbare Tendenzen hin untersucht. Ausgelöst durch die mathematische Informationstheorie von Claude Shannon erhält der Informationsbegriff in den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine zentrale Bedeutung. Dabei entwickeln sich in den einzelnen Wissenschaften verschiedene, zum Teil unvereinbare Vorstellungen von Information. Neben dem kulturalistischen, am menschlichen Handlungsbezug orientierten Informationsbegriff und dem naturalistischen Verständnis, das Information als in der Natur gegebenes Phänomen betrachtet, gewinnt dabei das maschinengeprägte Informationsverständnis der Kybernetik und Informatik an Bedeutung. Mit Hilfe der hermeneutischen Textbetrachtung arbeitet der Autor die Entwicklung der unterschiedlichen Informationsverständnisse heraus und bezieht sie auf den gegenwärtigen Informationsbegriff der Gesellschaft. Er kommt dabei zu dem Ergebnis, dass das technisch-statistische Verständnis von Information (nach Shannon) zwar in den meisten Disziplinen weitgehend abgelehnt wurde, aber über die Informatik und die Molekularbiologie eine dominierende Stellung in der Informationsgesellschaft der Gegenwart eingenommen hat.

Nach mühevoller Auswahl kommt der Herausgeber Peter Tallack auf 250 Stück; und bei aller unvermeidlichen Willkür ist ihm die Selektion so gut gelungen, wie dies wohl möglich ist. Der Ausbruch des Mt. St. Helens steht dann eben gleichberechtigt neben der Relativitätstheorie. Trotzdem vermittelt das Werk tatsächlich einen Überblick über die Wissenschaftsgeschichte und ermöglicht es, viele Geschehnisse in einen größeren Zusammenhang einzuordnen. Dabei helfen auch die vielen Querverweise am Ende jedes Artikels. Das Buch ist nach einem streng durchgehaltenen Schema aufgebaut. In chronologischer Folge wird jeder Entdeckung bzw. jedem Ereignis genau eine Doppelseite gewidmet: links der Text, rechts eine ganzseitige Abbildung dazu. So ist der Erklärung von Euklids »Elementen« eine Seite aus der 1482 in Venedig erschienenen ersten gedruckten Ausgabe des Werks beigefügt. Die Artikel sind für Laien gedacht und sehr allgemeinverständlich gehalten. Trotzdem sind die wissenschaftlichen Darstellungen meist präzise und zutreffend. Schließlich ist der Herausgeber selbst Naturwissenschaftler und ehemaliger Redakteur des renommierten englischen Wissenschaftsmagazins »Nature«. Die Texte stammen ebenfalls aus der Feder gestandener Wissenschaftsjournalisten. Garniert ist das Ganze noch mit acht zweiseitigen Essays zu ausgesuchten »herausragenden intellektuellen Leistun gen«, geschrieben von Experten wie dem Paläoanthropologen Richard Leakey (»Die ersten Menschen«) und dem Mathematiker Ian Stewart (»Die Infinitesimalrechnung«). »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« ist wuchtig, aber keinesfalls abschreckend. Durch die Gestaltung mit kurzen Texten und großformatigen Bildern wirkt es sehr gefällig, bietet etwas fürs Auge und verführt sofort zum Stöbern. Allerdings fehlt der Platz, um auch nur etwas tiefer gehende Informationen unterbringen: Die einzelnen Artikel sind kürzer als so mancher Lexikoneintrag. Da helfen auch die ebenfalls relativ kurzen Essays nicht. Und so schön und ansprechend die großformatigen Bilder auch sein mögen - in vielen Fällen sind sie reine Dekoration, die zum Verständnis nichts und zur Darstellung des Themas wenig beiträgt. Wenn der Erforschung der Wahrscheinlichkeiten durch Pascal und Fermat das Gemälde »Der Falschspieler« zugeordnet wird, hilft auch der Hinweis nicht, dass die damaligen Spieler über Wahrscheinlichkeiten kaum Bescheid wussten. Wen solches nicht stört, der hat in »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« einen wirklichen Prachtband gefunden."

- Abstract
- Dieses Werk ist der Wissenschaft gewidmet, der Geschichte und über die Logik der Forschung, über die Rolle, die die Hypothesen spielen und die Einbildungskraft und über die Methode der Nachprüfung. Es gibt Bücher, die werden als Klassiker bezeichnet, weil sie zwei Eigenschaften haben: (1) Jeder ist der Meinung, dieses Buch müsse man gelesen haben, und (2) niemand hat es wirklich gelesen. Im Zeitablauf bildet sich dann der Mythos, dieses Werk zähle zur Rubrik der Klassiker oder Must-Reads. Karl Poppers "Klassiker" (im positiven Sinne) gehört mit Sicherheit in diese Kategorie. Schade ist daran, daß "Logik der Forschung" aus diesem Grunde scheinbar mit einer ungebührlichen Ehrfurcht und Scheu betrachtet wird. Dabei ist es nicht nur verständlich geschrieben, sondern in Teilen geradezu unterhaltsam zu lesen! (Das glaubt jetzt wahrscheinlich wieder keiner!) "Logik der Forschung" bietet jedem wissenschaftlich Interessierten einen grundlegenden Zugang zu den Methoden der empirischen Wissenschaft. Dort, wo viele Bücher über wissenschaftliche und/oder statistische Methoden anfangen, geht Popper noch einen oder zwei Schritte zurück, indem er dem Leser erst einmal plausibel macht, WARUM es eigentlich nötig ist, Althergebrachtes neu zu hinterfragen und sich von traditionellen Vorstellungen zu lösen. Jedem, der wissenschaftlich arbeiten oder nur kritisch denken will, sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt. Denn jede noch so moderne wissenschaftliche Methode läßt sich nicht zweckmäßig anwenden und vor allem interpretieren, wenn einem nicht z.B. die Induktionsproblematik geläufig ist, die Tatsache, daß sich Theorien und Modelle empirisch nicht verifizieren, sondern nur falsifizieren lassen. (Nach dem Motto: "Ich habe bisher nur schwarze Raben gesehen, also sind alle Raben schwarz!") Dieses Buch schult den kritischen Geist und ist deshalb eigentlich für jeden interessant. Darüber hinaus ist es wirklich gut geschrieben, vor allem im ersten Teil. Eine wirklich lohnende Investition. Laßt es nicht zum verstaubten "Klassiker" verkommen!!!

- Abstract
- Der Mensch: Krone der Schöpfung oder Schrecken des Ökosystems? Wie haben wir, Homo Sapiens, es geschafft, den Kampf der sechs menschlichen Spezies ums Überleben für uns zu entscheiden? Warum ließen unsere Vorfahren, die einst Jäger und Sammler waren, sich nieder, betrieben Ackerbau und gründeten Städte und Königreiche? Warum begannen wir, an Götter zu glauben, an Nationen, an Menschenrechte? Warum setzen wir Vertrauen in Geld, Bücher und Gesetze und unterwerfen uns der Bürokratie, Zeitplänen und dem Konsum? Und hat uns all dies im Lauf der Jahrtausende glücklicher gemacht? Vor 100 000 Jahren war Homo sapiens noch ein unbedeutendes Tier, das unauffällig in einem abgelegenen Winkel des afrikanischen Kontinents lebte. Unsere Vorfahren teilten sich den Planeten mit mindestens fünf weiteren menschlichen Spezies, und die Rolle, die sie im Ökosystem spielten, war nicht größer als die von Gorillas, Libellen oder Quallen. Vor 70 000 Jahren dann vollzog sich ein mysteriöser und rascher Wandel mit dem Homo sapiens, und es war vor allem die Beschaffenheit seines Gehirns, die ihn zum Herren des Planeten und zum Schrecken des Ökosystems werden ließ. Bis heute hat sich diese Vorherrschaft stetig zugespitzt: Der Mensch hat die Fähigkeit zu schöpferischem und zu zerstörerischem Handeln wie kein anderes Lebewesen. Und die Menschheit steht jetzt an einem Punkt, an dem sie entscheiden muss, welchen Weg sie von hier aus gehen will.

Orientierungshilfen und Wegweiser gibt es also viele, sowohl online als auch über traditionellere Medien wie dem Buch. Auch das vorliegende Werk von Anna-Katharina Weilenmann ordnet sich in diese Kategorie von Internet-Führern ein. Auf rund 200 Seiten werden Einstiege in verschiedenste Themen der Wissenschaft angeboten. Über so genannte Subject Gateways - nennen wir sie schlicht Themen-Portale - werden Wissenschaftsdisziplinen erschlossen, meist in einer kurzen, aber präzisen Beschreibung der online-Ressource. Die Bandbreite der Sachgebiete ist dementsprechend groß und orientiert sich an der Wissenschaft: - Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft - Philosophie und Psychologie, Religion / Theologie - Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie, Politik - Wirtschaft, Recht - Erziehung, Ethnologie, Sprache, Literaturwissenschaft - Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Biologie - Technik - Medizin - Landwirtschaft, Informatik - Kunst, Architektur, Musik, Theater, Film - Sport - Geschichte Geographie, Reisen Bei der Auswahl der einzelnen Web-Quellen ließ sich die Autorin von Qualitätskriterien wie Alter der Webseite, der Zuverlässigkeit der Inhalte, der Aktualität aber auch von der Art der Trägerschaft leiten. Webseiten mit einem akademischen Hintergrund standen daher im Vordergrund, waren aber nicht ausschließlich vertreten. So finden sich auch Webseiten kommerzieller Anbieter (z.B. Scopus von Elsevier) oder auch anderer öffentlicher, nicht-akademischer Institutionen (wie der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek mit Ariadne) im Webseiten-Verzeichnis. Rund 200 deutsch- und englischsprachige Einträge werden im Buch genauer beschrieben, mit Informationen zum Inhalt des Angebots, der Urheberschaft und Angabe möglicher Kosten. Auch weiterführende Links werden häufig angeführt. Ein einführendes Kapitel zur Informationsrecherche rundet dieses gelungene Buch ab.
Empfehlung: Das Buch eignet sich meiner Meinung nach gut als Ausgangspunkt für die Recherche in einem noch unbekannten Sachgebiet. Zum einen, weil ein Sachgebiet von recht wenigen, dafür von der Autorin gut ausgesuchten Web-Quellen eingerahmt wird. Zum anderen, weil hier von vertrauenswürdigen Webseiten ausgegangen werden kann. Man kann es auch anders sagen: dieses Buch gehört möglichst nahe an jede InternetArbeitsstation. Aufgrund der Dynamik des Themas - Links und Webseiten können recht rasch "altern" - hat dieses Buch natürlich eine fast schon natürliche Lebensdauer. Hier wäre es interessant, und das ist weniger ein Hinweis an die Autorin als vielmehr ein Wink an den Verlag, die so detailreich beschriebenen Quellen auch online zugänglich zu machen, nämlich in der Form von Bookmarks, die von den Leserlnnen auf eigene Bookmarking-Tools übernommen werden könnten. Entweder ganz einfach als Favoriten im eigenen Browser oder zu elaborierten Werkzeugen wie Rollyo, wo individuelle Suchdienste basierend auf selbst erstellten Searchrolls bedient werden könnten. - Abstract
- Die Fähigkeiten des Bewusstseins liefern den Schlüssel für die umwälzenden Entwicklungen, die der Mensch auf der Leiter der Evolution zurückgelegt hat. Wie ist es zu erklären, dass unser Gehirn dem anderer Primaten so stark ähnelt und ihm doch so dramatisch überlegen ist? Warum stattet unser Hirn das Zentrum unseres Ichs mit so viel Autonomie und autobiographischem Vermögen aus? Donald zeigt die Vielschichtigkeit des Bewusstseins auf und erläutert, wie es sich auf der Grundlage der Kultur entwickeln konnte. Für den Autor ist der menschliche Geist ein hybrides Produkt, in dem Materie, nämlich unser Gehirn, mit einem unsichtbaren symbolischen Gewebe, nämlich der Kultur, verwoben ist, woraus ein weit verzweigtes kognitives Netzwerk entsteht. Allein dieser hybride Charakter unseres Geistes ermöglichte es der menschlichen Spezies, die Grenzen zu überschreiten, denen die übrigen Säugetiere unterworfen sind.
Donald, Professor für Psychologie und für Kognitionswissenschaften, referiert die Erkenntnisse, die die Wissenschaft bisher über das menschliche Bewusstsein herausgefunden hat, und kommt zu dem Schluss: Nur das Bewusstsein hat den Menschen zur Kultur im Sinne gemeinsamer Gepflogenheiten, Regeln und Sprachsysteme geführt, diese wiederum hat die Bewusstseinsentwicklung des Menschen enorm beschleunigt und ihm einen evolutionären Vorsprung gesichert. Ein inhaltsreicher, gut belegter und diskussionswürdiger Beitrag, der sich in 1. Linie an Fachleute richtet.
