Abstract
Bis heute bilden die sieben Thesen von John Friedmann aus dem Jahr 1986 die Grundlage der Weltstadtforschung. Friedmanns Fokus liegt dabei auf Wirtschaft und Finanzen. Auch weiterführende Überlegungen wie die von Saskia Sassen beinhalten diesen Aspekt, betrachten aber auch gerade im Kontext der Globalisierung die zunehmende Vernetzung von Städten und die Loslösung von räumlichen Dimensionen. Ausschlaggebend für diese Entwicklungen sind zu großen Teilen der Einfluss von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien, die eine ganz neue Art von Städten, die informationellen Städte, entstehen lassen. Aufbauend auf der bisherigen Forschung und angelehnt an Manuel Castells' Modell des "Space of Flows" werden Macht-, Finanz- und Informationsströme in den beispielhaft gewählten Städten Düsseldorf, London und Singapur gemessen. Wir erhoffen uns damit, eine praktikable Operationalisierung zur Definition von Weltstädten und informationellen Städten gefunden zu haben.
