- Abstract
- Das auf dem 4. Bielefelder Kolloquium bereits angekündigte und im April 1998 gestartete Projekt 'Die Digitale Bibliothek NRW' hat zu einer vielzahl von Teilprojekten sowie Aktivitäten im Bereich der kooperativen Erwerbung von Literatur und elektronischen Publikationen in Nordrhein-Westfalen geführt. Der Artikel gibt einen kurzen Überblick über das Gesamtprojekt undd beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der Zugangssystem der Digitalen Bibliothek NRW. Das Zugangssystem ermöglicht eine kombinierte Recherche in verteilt vorliegenden Informationsressourcen über die Standardschnittstellen HTTP und Z30.50 und realisiert eine Integration von Nachweissystemen mit Dokumentliefer- und Volltextsystemen. Mit der in das Zugangssystem eingebundenen Collect-Datenbank (Verbundkatalog Digitale Dokumente) ist sowohl die manuelle als auch automatisierte Erschließung von elektronischen Publikationen aller Art möglich

- Abstract
- Der Computer ist eine Technologie der symbolischen Repräsentation und der Kommunikation, kurz - eine Technologie des Schreiens. In den achtziger Jahren machte der Personal Computer (PC) diese Technologie einer großen Zahl von Autoren wie Lesern in Europa, Nordamerika und Japan verfügbar. Heute eröffnet das Internet neue Formen der Publikation: es befreit das elektronische Schreiben aus dem individuellen Computer und verbreitet es über ein die gesamte entwickelte Welt umspannendes Netzwerk aus Maschinen. Das World Wide Web im Internet ist ein methodisches Verfahren, welches das elektronische Schreiben schließlich in die Lage versetzt, sich von Schreibweisen für gedruckte Publikationen deutlich zu unterscheiden. Eine neue Ökonomie des Schreibens, ein neues Zusammenspiel von technischen Geräten und den Weisen, mit ihnen umzugehen, beginnt sich auszubreiten.

- Abstract
- Die Digitale Bibliothek hat viele Gesichter und viele Funktionen, Kein des Begriffs ist die Aufbereitung, Zugänglichkeit und Verarbeitung von digitalen - aber auch nichtdigitalen - Quellen. Das Management von elektronischen Informationsressourcen birgt neue Strukturen, neue Paradigmen, neue Arbeitsweisen und neue Informationsvermittlungsmethoden. Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw des "dato smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben

- Die Autoren suchen nach Antworten, warum die Faszination um das Internet anhält und welche Lücken die Diskussion darüber aufweist. Ersteres beantworten sie mit den horrenden Meldungen über die Zahl der Informationsangebote und Nutzer, dem scheinbar kostenfreien Navigieren durch das Netz, den chaotisch-anarchischen Entwicklungen und dem gleichzeitigen Entstehen erster Inseln von Ordnung und Qualitätssicherung sowie der Eroberung des deutschen Informationsmarktes, der den Anbietern neue Wirkungskreise eröffnet. Wesentliche Aspekte bleiben aber in der Diskussion unbeachtet: da niemand die Grenzen des Netzes kennt, besteht die Gefahr, dem Thema nicht genug Tiefe geben zu können. - Abstract
- Die DFG-SSG-Bibliotheken haben bisher sowohl eine Informations- als auch eine Beschaffungsaufgabe, die darin besteht, die Fachgebiete mit einschlägiger inländischer und vor allem ausländischer Literatur auszustatten. Nun stehen im Internet und anderen netzen Informationsquellen zur Verfügung, die nur in ähnlicher Weise wie das SSG-Programm zu bewältigen sind. Anhand eines 'Clearinghouse'-Konzeptes kann der strukturierte Zugang zu fachbezogenen Iformationen in vernetzten Informationsquellen und vor allem im Internet geschaffen werden. Einige Aspekte des 'Clearinghouse'-Konzeptes sowie die Erfahrungen, Inhalte verteilter Informationsquellen mittels neuer Suchinstrumente zu bündeln, werden dargestellt. Die Verwendung von Gophern, Indices, Pointers, Subject Trees, WAIS-recherchierbaren Datenbanken und anderen Werkzeugen bei der Aufgabe, einen relativ präzisen Überblick über die relevanten Quellen für einen bestimmten Interessenschwerpunkt herzustellen, wird erläutert

- Abstract
- Immer häufiger werden das System 'Internet', die dort genutzten Programmfunktionen und Werkzeuge sowie die damit zugänglichen Informationsangebote in Fachdiskussionen und -veröffentlichungen vorgestellt. Als einführende Hilfsmittel und Ratgeber zur Information über dieses Netzwerk sowie zur eigentlichen Nutzung von Internet sind (neben in elektronischer Form vorliegenden Publikationen) mittlerweile mehrere einführende Printveröffentlichungen in englischer Sprache auf dem Markt. Drei dieser Publikationen werden im vorliegenden Artikel ausführlicher vorgestellt und bewertet. Zum besseren Verständnis des sachlichen Zusammenhangs ist der Rezension ein knapp gefaßter Überblick über die unter dem Begriff 'Internet' zusammengefaßten Funktionen und Informationsangebote vorangestellt.
