    Abstract
Describes how librarians at the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, California University Los Angeles (UCLA), developed a library user training programme, based on computer assisted instruction, for the 800 to 900 undergraduate biology students per year who enrol in the department's basic, compulsory, introductory course. Compares the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction with the lecture method, using a range of techniques, including a follow up survey. Concludes that computer assisted instruction in combination with the laboratory manual is an effective and user friendly way of offering user training

    Abstract

    Abstract
The role of a modern librarian has become more and more demanding in the information age. One of the new challenges for the information specialists is what's usually called "the teaching librarian", meaning that the librarian or information specialist should be able to teach at least basic practical searching skills to the patrons in need for relevant information. Query Performance Analyser (QPA) is a tool for analysing and comparing the performance of individual queries. It has been developed in the department of information studies at the University of Tampere. It can be used in user training to demonstrate the characteristics of IR systems and different searching strategies. Usually users can't get any feedback about the effectiveness of their queries and therefore may have difficulties to perceive the actual fectiveness of a query formulated, or the effect changes between queries. QPA provides a instant visual feedback about the performance of a given query and gives the user a possibility to compare the effectiveness of multiple queries and the performance of different query formulation strategies. QPA is based on predefined search topics. They all contain a corpus of documents that are relevant to the given topic. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief insight to the infrastructure of QPA, the basic :Functionality of the QPA-based game, and to its implementation in IR education.

    Abstract
Illustrates the difficulty of instructing CD-ROM end users at a new university library, caused by the different levels of knowledge of the users, based on the experience of the library of University Carlos 2 de Madrid. Concludes that easy menu search interfaces, training of end users to be self searchers, and training librarians the trainers of end users, are the objectives of the CD-ROM end user training department in a brand new university library

Reports on the current state of reference services supplied by the WWW and describes: the main features of WWW based reference services; several models of handling requests; and the impact of these services on traditional reference services. Based upon anecdotal information, concludes that, to date, Web based reference services have had little impact upon traditional reference services

    Abstract
The major attractions of building a Web based reference information system are described: software is virtually 'free'; required training is minimal; systems can be accessed by a variety of platforms; and reference librarians around the world are able to share their expertise. Discusses these points in the context of the evolution of reference information file systems and describes a prototype to show how to construct a basic Web based system

    Abstract
At the start of the academic year reference staff are hard pressed to provide sufficient assistance to first time users of CD-ROMs, who have missed bibliographic instruction classes, or who need more guidance before searching. The literature on CD-ROMs was reviewed, and a survey conducted to estimate the training needs of searchers. It was found that 100% of the inexperienced searchers required assistance while searching, and 50% of their search strategies were later rated as poor. More than half the experienced searchers also needed the librarians assistance, and 31% of this group demonstrated a poor understanding of searching techniques. The survey findings were incorporated into CDIntro, a computer assisted learning package designed by the authors

    Abstract
Recent studies of research on reference effectiveness have called attention to many unanswered questions. The reductionist method of studying effectiveness has failed to produce the cohesive picture of reference performance that is needed. Offers a new, more holistic, approach to evaluating reference librarianship along with a new standard of evaluation based on the study of exemplary reference librarians. discusses the implications of this profile for both evaluation and training in reference work

    Abstract
Presents a 3-part model for the referral transaction based on the '3C's' training model used by INFO LINE of Los Angeles. Explains what happens during the contact, clarification and closure stages of a referral interview, and offers practical tips on each. Also discusses handling problem clients and looks in some detail at the nature of the specialist's role: a specialist can present information and suggestions for addressing a problem, but only the client can actually address it

    Abstract
Early in 1996 South Ayrshire Libraries submitted a proposal to the British Library Research and Innovation Centre's Digital Libraries Programme, outlining a plan to enhance public library support to users who were engaged in open or distance learning by identifying and classifying a range of learning resources which could be accessed via the Internet. This was to be accomplished by designing and developing a Web-based directory to support open learners. In addition it was planned that references to locally held open learning material should also be included in the directory. The proposal included a preliminary stage which involved collaboration with the Robert Gordon University School of of Information and Media, to develop information and skills training for independent learners. It was envisaged that this would take the form of a Web-based resource which collated various learning skills packages which are currently available on the Internet. This could then be used as the basis for developing information skills courses which could be run locally by public library staff. The aim of this paper is to describe the procedure and rationale for developing the Information Skills Web site and to report on progress to date. Examines the question of why information skills training was seen to be a key starting point for the project and the issues and challenges which have surfaced during the development and implementation of the Web site designed to facilitate this training. The Web site itself can be accessed at http://www.rgu.ac.uk/~sim/staff/mmcc/ ayr/intro.htm

    Abstract
Academic librarians seeking to assess information literacy skills often focus on testing as a primary means of evaluation. Educators have long recognized the limitations of tests, and these limitations cause many educators to prefer rubric assessment to test-based approaches to evaluation. In contrast, many academic librarians are unfamiliar with the benefits of rubrics. Those librarians who have explored the use of information literacy rubrics have not taken a rigorous approach to methodology and interrater reliability. This article seeks to remedy these omissions by describing the benefits of a rubric-based approach to information literacy assessment, identifying a methodology for using rubrics to assess information literacy skills, and analyzing the interrater reliability of information literacy rubrics in the hands of university librarians, faculty, and students. Study results demonstrate that Cohen's can be effectively employed to check interrater reliability. The study also indicates that rubric training sessions improve interrater reliability among librarians, faculty, and students.
